Is There a Cream to Prevent Scarring?

My two year old daughter fell on my treadmill last week while I was on it. She got her face pretty scraped up on the belt of the treadmill. Good news is she was not seriously hurt. But, as her face is healing up, Im noticing that the skin underneath is now very pink, discolored and im afraid it will be a permanent scar. Wondering if anyone knows of a good cream or other treatment to help the wound heal w/o any scar?? Its only been a week so im hoping it will continue to get bettter, but since its on her face, i really want it all to go away!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Thanks for all the great advice. Its been about 2 weeks or so and my daughters face is healing great. I think it looked worse than it actually was..but i did start using vitamin E and i think in the next few weeks the small red area thats left should heal up perfectly. But all the advice was much appreciated.

Yes. Try a product called, 'Traumeel'. I think you can only find it at health food stores. It has homeopathic pills as well as a cream. Amazing stuff.

Try aloe vera! And I mean from the real plant. Get one of the "leaves" and cut it open. Put the fleshy part of the plant on the cut. If you do this every day for as long as possible, it should help heal the wound nicely. This is from experience. When I was in college I fell down a flight of concrete stairs face first! I busted my chin open (it wasn't deep enough for stitches) and was worried about scarring. I put the aloe vera plant on my chin for a good week (if my memory serves correctly). It's now 10+ years later, and no scars.

You could always try vitamin E and don't forget sunscreen even when she's just outdoors for a little bit!

Hey M.! We've tried Mederma for kids (which was pretty costly at over $20.00 for a little tube) when my son fell off some monkey bars at his preschool. If I remember correctly, the main ingredient was Aloe Vera. Aloe Vera has helped me with my injuries in the past, too. If you can't get a hold off the actual Aloe Vera leaf itself, go to the store and find an Aloe Vera gel with no alcohol and with the most concentrated Aloe Gel in it. I think you'd have good luck at Henry's or Whole Foods, or a place where they carry holistic and organic items. I have also tried Vitamin E oil from the actual Vitamin E capsule, which has worked pretty well but it's super sticky. Good luck and I sure she'll heal up nicely!

Mederma. They even have a "kids" mederma now. When my daughter was 3, a plastic surgeon rec. it to us, and I think it helped with a facial injury scar.

Go to your health food store and get some Collidal Silver Cream (not cheap) but it works!

Hi M., years ago my sister in law's nephew got hit by a car, I think he was like 3 or 4 any way his face got scrapped really bad from the asphalt, and she told me they used cranberry juice, and he has no scars at all, Coca butter is good. They also have mederma for kids that is supposed to get rid of scars,me personally I like the all natural, and home remedies myself. I'm glad you daughter wasn't serrious injured. J. L.

Try aloe vera and vitamin e. I take the vitamin e capsules, break them open and use the pure oil from it. Also you should keep the area covered and moist. don't let the area scab. And there is a product, I can't think of the name - sorry, that is like a thick bandage type of tape you put over the area. I want to say it is a silicone scar reducing tape.

You can also go see a plastic surgeon. they should be able to tell you what you can do.

good luck!

Hi M.,

Cocoa butter is really good for that. I had a scar on my leg from a burn from when I was 12. Years later, when I was 24, I started using cocoa butter everyday and it was gone. Also, vitamin E oil is good to use too. Hope the scar dissipates quickly!

The American Burn Association recommends Mederma cream. Also, more importantly, it is imperative that no sun gets on that skin! Once it is healed, sunscreen EVERY day for 12-18 months. Even the cloudiest days! Hats too!
