Has Anyone Tried a Good "Intenstinal Cleansing" Product?

Hello fellow moms! I've recently begun trying to introduce less meat, more soy and more organic natural products into my diet. I was listening to a radio program that talked about how beneficial it is to do a "cleanse" periodically to get rid of the waste that builds up in your colon/intestines. As gross as this sounds, if it works I'll try it! I would also like a natural fiber supplement to take on a daily basis. There are so many products out there and I thought I would ask the trusty mamasource group and see if anyone has any recommendations!

Don't believe those radio infomercials. Unless you have a terrible diet with no fiber it is just not true that stuff builds up in your intestines. I've seen the inside of my intestines during a colonoscopy (there's a little camera there) and they were pure as the driven snow -- not one particle of anything, and my diet is good, but not amazing.

In the 80's, when I was young and believed everything I heard, I had a free colonic done at a (not too clean-looking, in retrospect) clinic. They flushed out your colon and you got to see mountains of poop exit through a clear tube. Sure, I guess I was very clean for a day and five pounds thinner, but all that happened was I didn't poop again for four days.

Watch "You Are What You Eat" on the BBC channel, and you will see that if you eat well (and exercise) you don't need to do all that silliness. If you want to take a fiber supplement, that will be helpful if you really feel you don't get enough fiber in your diet.

p.s. - A guy I know just a couple of weeks ago tried some cleansing, flushing regimen, and all that happened was he just about dehydrated himself from a bout of horrendous diarrhea and was chained to the toilet for a couple of days.

I have also used the DR. Natura product, "colonix", it is great. Everyone can benefit from cleansing, even tho you have received some responses that it's silliness...another good resource is www.healthyhealing.com, look up "detoxification", there are lots of cleansing regimens you can try, not just colon cleansing. You would benefit from a bit of research, to see what's right for you.

Another good simple cleanse, is to do a saltwater cleanse. DRink plenty of water the day before, then use 1 tsp of sea salt in 1 quart water (warm works best for me, I think of it like broth), get up very early & take that first, before any other food or drink. Plan to stay home for a couple hours until it runs thru you, & you can feel it working (as long as you're hydrated enough). It is a good start to a cleansing regimen, & helps if you have constipation too. After this, you are free to get on with your day.

Cleansing can help your thought process become clearer, improve your vision, energy level, decrease belly bloating, and help you sleep better, it's good to do it at least once a year.

Eat a high fiber diet, drink plenty of water and enjoy an occasional cup of coffee.

Colon "cleansing" isn't necessary if you poop regularly. If you don’t poop regularly and feel like you need an intervention Fleet enemas cost about $2 and are much more comfortable and safe (seriously, colonic irrigation can be dangerous) than having someone stick a hose up your butt.

I have more to add to the mix of recommendations. I distribute these products from www.symmetrydirect.com/dhendon

Symmetry Direct has two great products for this. ParaCleanse (kills the parasites first) then BotanaCleanse Plus (flushes & restores normal flora). We all are exposed to parasites (household pets, improperly washed fresh produce, improperly cooked meats, chicken, fish and SUSHI). The Symmetry Dr. is a Doctor of Oriental medicine(Dr. Mark Crapo)and he recommends a quarterly cleansing for everyone. The two products take about 2 1/2 weeks to swallow (with lots of water) and can be relatively uneventful for those who are not terribly toxic. Although, some have seen long tapeworms passed on the first treatment! No one likes that idea but the thought of parasites growing for years being in our bodies and draining away health, energy & vitality is even more sickening. Personally, I prefer to get rid of them while they are still microscopic and invisible.

Victorious Living to you!

A lot of people want to get in on this "new" concept and believe that it will fix what is wrong. Good health is NOT just about cleansing the colon. In fact, if you don't do it right you can actually do more harm than good. I do not recommend doing an enema. Most of the toxins are stored in the liver so it's important to cleanse the liver! I would recommend Zand system cleanse. It's a one week system that gently cleanses the liver and also provides you with fiber to move things out from the liver and through the colon.
You need to consume 35g of fiber EACH day. The typial American consumes only about 1/3 of that. No wonder we have all sorts of ailments and issues.

I've tried all different types of cleanses, trying to find the right one. Some worked, some didn't, but my favorite so far has been the Master Cleanse, or the Lemonade Diet. The book is super cheap to find, or you can find the beginnings of it online, just google either name. You should do it 1-2 times a year. It's not easy, because fasting goes along with it, but it's well worth it. Then I do the Detox 7 once a month, which is just a matter of taking some pills. Sometimes I can find it at Costco, where it's $10 for 2 months worth.

Hi S., Here is a wonderful, natural fiber supplement that I use called Nutrilite® Invisifiber. It is a unique blend of three natural soluble fibers. It's a convenient, taste-free, non-gritty powder can be sprinkled onto foods or mixed into liquids. And one stick pack contains a full 4 grams of dietary fiber.
I also use IntestiFlora 7 which helps build a natural balance of healthy probiotics, like acidophilus, in your digestive tract. Daily use can improve your overall immune health and digestive function. It can also help with the digestion of dairy products. In addition to seven probiotics, this product includes a prebiotic to encourage their growth – and the stick packs need no refrigeration. Swallow the contents of a stick pack, sprinkle it on cold foods, or mix it into cold drinks. I mix them in my protein shake in the mornings. They both come in a 30 stick pack box.
They are made by Nutrilite which was the first company to formulate, produce, and sell a multivitamin/mineral product in North America. It is the only global vitamin and mineral brand to grow, harvest, and process plants on their own certified organic farms. They are #1 online in health and have a 180 day 100% money back guarantee.

Hi S.,
I'm not sure you need a colon cleanse, but if you want to try cleaning it out now and then I do have a sugegstion. My husband and son have a medical condition that requires frequent colonoscopy, thus cleansing their colons beforehand. We'e tried numerous different options for cleansing and many were greatly disliked by our son. My husband no longer has a colon (has a 'pouch' that works like a rectum, made from his small intestine), so his cleansing is much quicker and not much of a problem. Our son tried something new this May that he liked a great deal, Miralax. Also, I had two recent spinal surgeries and have dealt with abdominal distention since the first surgery 8 weeks ago. My doctor says I'm likely suffering from gastric dysmotility (lack of motion in/movement through my GI system) as a reaction to the anesthesia and drugs. She put me on a flavored Metamucil, but I switched to Benefiber after trying several different types of fiber options. It's my favorite to use. The flavored Metamucil tasted great (it was orange, my favorite), but it had asparatame, coloring, and artificial flavoring, which turned me off. I try to avoid artificial coloring and flavoring as well as (what I consider) unnatural substitutes for sugar and such. Also, there was a warning I didn't like on the Metamucil that comes on all fiber products of psyllium husk, a choking risk. I'm sure it's minimal, but I'd rather have a product that didn't make a ponit to warn me, didn't have a concern that I needed to be flagged about. The psyllium husk thickens, so you must make sure to take it with a full glass of water (or other fluids), which doesn't sound so bad, but the risk is that it will swell in your throat or espophagus and I'd just rather avoid that risk all together with a different product that does the same job. My husband bought different brands of fiber options and I stuck with the Benefiber. There's no taste to it and I mix it easily in even a glass of water --don't need to hide a taste by mixing it in some other drink or food. It's a non-thickening sugar-free (with no fake substitute) powder. Instead of psyllium husk, it's a gluten-free wheat dextrin and I love it. I'm going to continue using it, regardless of when my gastric dysmotility goes away (I had my 2nd surgery 2 & 1/2 weeks ago and am freshly blown up again). These are only my personal recommendations; I'm happy to share them with you. Have you heard of pro and prebiotics, btw? My husband and son are on probiotics as prescriptions for their health conditions (mega doses, Rx strength only), but they have helped greatly with their health issues and I can only guess that the lesser store-bought doses may work in some positive ways for people without these conditions, too. I've looked into them for myself, too (not the dosage my husband and son take, though).
Good luck! And, don't forget to check with your doctor for suggestions and 'clearance', too.

Hi S.,

One product I can reccomend 100% is Juice Plus+. My whole family has been consuming it for the last 5 years and it has made an incredible difference in our health. It is 17 different fruits and veggies in a capsule, chewable or gummie. What really sold me on the product was all of the scientific research that has been done on it. www.StudiesOnJuicePlus.com It has been proven over and over again to raise antioxidant levels and help balance out our immune systems. I have a 13 year old daughter and a 6 year old son. They are the healthiest they have ever been (so am I) We have made many changes in our diet since being introduced to JP+ 5 years ago by a holistic nurse, but I know having 17 different fruits and veggies that are bio-available, which means they are absorped into the bloodstream, makes a HUGE difference in our health. We will take it forever!! I would be happy to send you some information or answer any questions you might have. I have found I don't feel the need to cleanse as often since I have been taking this because my body is naturally cleansing itself everyday with JP+
They are currently doing a Children's Health Study seeing if Children are healthier consuming JP+ and the results have been very positive. If you have a child between the ages of 6 and 13 they can get JP+ for free for up to 3 years with a paying adult. That's how I got started on it was signing up for the Children's Study with my daughter and I was so happy with it that I had to put my whole family on it!

Good Luck!!

Dear S.:

I agree with the recommendations that you work on balancing your system with what it needs rather than maintaining it through periodic "cleanses". While I do a gentle detox cleanse a couple of times a year (more designed to detox organs by giving them specific nutrients that they need to operate efficiently), I'm not an advocate of the aggressive cleanses that are all the rage right now.

As far as ensuring a sufficient intake of fiber, I highly recommend Inulin. It's a fibrous extract from fruits and vegetables, virtually flavorless and perfect for adding to everything! The least expensive source I've found is www.netrition.com. It mixes without color or flavor into hot and cold foods and beverages (just be sure to stir the beverage as your adding -- particularly hot beverages -- to ensure it dissolves completely). I've even sprinkled it on top of French toast, added a tablespoon of honey and enjoyed the most decadent five bites of French toast ever!!! It's also a wonderful way to ensure that everyone in the house is getting good fiber as I add it to sauces, pasta and other foods. The only caveat: start slowly as you can get "gassy" if you take too much too soon.

Congratulations on making this decision to take better care of yourself!

In spirit,

V. T

My husband and his friend use this product called "The Original Colon Cleanse." He got it at some health food store and I've tried it a couple of times. The only reason why I haven't kept up with it because I'm so busy that I sometimes forget. I think it works really well. As someone else mentioned, if you're not pooping as much, you might want to try this. I remember watching Oprah and when Dr. Oz was on and he talked about how the shape of our poop should be. (Sorry I don't have the information, you could probably look it up.) But ever since I've watched that, it's in my mind and I try to remember to eat more high fiber products and drink lots of water. I hope this helps.

S., I would say the safest daily fiber would be increasing your fruits high in fiber. The berries and melons are a great fiber source. I have been on MonaVie for almost a year and my system remains clean because of the 19 fruits and it's much cheaper to drink 19 fruits at $4.90 per day and 4 fluid ounces than to eat that many at more than $11.00 per day.

It's true that most of the toxins in your body are not in your colon. I agree that a healthy diet and exercise is most important. But, we do get toxins from the air, from water (swimming pools, etc). If you are interested in a cleansing product, I can recommend Arbonne's 7-day Cleanse Dietary Supplement. You don't fast during the 7 days, but are instructed to eat lots of fruits and vegetables, grains, and especially water! The products are all natural, and this line is sea-based, so the ingredients include blue-green algae, aloe vera, rhubarb roots and others. Email me for more information or visit www.everydaycounts.myarbonne.com. Good luck in finding the best product for you.

I like pure psyllium husk for daily "regularity" and heart health. Took a little getting used to, but can be added to cereal, e.g. if you don't like to drink. Has no sugar/additives like Metamucil, though that would be another option. Also, you can put it in a smaller amount of liquid just to "choke down," then follow w/ drinking additional plain water to reach the full 8+ recommended ounces. Lots of water, in general, is, of course, always good for colon health and motility.

Sorry this is so long. I have a friend that does this all the time (twice a year). She recommends the liver flush before the colon flush. I think she uses the Arise & Shine Cleanse Program for a colon flush but I have not tried it. I have tried the liver flush once but have since gotten pregnant.

Here is the 'recipe' and directions for the
Liver/Gallbladder Flush
What you will need:
• 7 liters of raw apple juice
• 4 Tablespoons Epsom salt
• ½ Cup Olive oil, cold-pressed
• 2/3 Cup Fresh grapefruit juice (pink is best)
• 2 pint jars, one with a lid
Preparation
Drink one liter of raw apple juice a day for a period of six days as it will soften the stones to make their passage through the bile ducts easier. The apple juice has a strong cleansing effect and may cause some bloating and even diarrhea during the first few days. The fermentation of the juice helps the expansion of the bile ducts. If this becomes uncomfortable, mix the apple juice with water. Drink the juice slowly throughout the day between meals but avoid during meals. Drink half before a meal and then half three hours after a meal. This is in addition to your normal water intake. Eat normal light meals.
On the sixth day of drinking apple juice, if you feel hungry in the morning, eat a light breakfast such as cooked cereal, fruit, or fruit juice but no milk, butter, yoghurt or cheese, ham, eggs, etc. For lunch eat plain cooked vegetables with rice and a little salt but no protein foods, butter, or oil.
Don't eat or drink anything except water after 2 PM! The timing given below is essential for success of the cleanse.
Doing the Gallbladder Flush
Evening:
6:00 PM: Mix four tablespoons of Epsom salt in 3 cups of water and keep it in a jar. This makes four servings, ¾ cup or 185 ml each. Drink your first portion now. You may take a few sips of water afterwards to get rid of the bitter taste in the mouth. You may prefer to use a large plastic straw as this bypasses the taste buds on the tongue.
8:00 PM: Drink your second ¾ Cup of Epsom salt.
9:30 PM: If you haven't had a bowel movement until now, take a water enema; this will trigger a series of bowel movements.
9:45 PM: Squeeze the grapefruits or lemons and oranges; you will need ¾ Cup of juice; remove pulp. Pour the juice and ½ Cup olive oil into the pint jar. Close the jar tightly and shake hard about twenty times or until watery. Drink this mixture at 10pm, but if you still feel you need to visit the bathroom a few more times, you may delay drinking the mixture for 10 minutes.
10:00 PM: Stand, don't sit, next to your bed and drink the concoction in one go or with a large plastic straw.
LIE DOWN STRAIGHT AWAY. This is necessary to help release the gallstones. Turn off the lights and lie flat on you back with your head up high on a pillow or two. Put your attention on your liver and, if you can, visualize the mixture moving the stones out of the numerous bile ducts in your liver. Keep perfectly still for a least 20 minutes! This gives the stones a chance to move along the bile ducts. There won't be any pain because the Epsom salt will keep the bile duct's valves wide open.
Go to sleep if you can.
If at anytime during the night you feel the urge to have a bowel movement, do so. Check if there are already small gallstones, pea green or tan colored ones, floating in the toilet. You may feel nauseous during the night and early morning hours. This will pass as the morning progresses.
The Following Morning:
6:00 - 6:30 AM: Upon awakening, but not before 6 am, drink your third ¾ cup of Epsom salt. If you feel very thirsty drink a glass of warm water before taking the salt. Rest or meditate. If you are sleepy, you may go back to bed, although it is best if the body stays in the upright position.
10:00 - 10:30 AM: You may drink freshly pressed fruit juice, preferably apple or orange.
11:00 AM: Eat 1 - 2 pieces of fruit.
12:00 NOON: You may eat regular but light food.
The Results you can expect from the Gallbladder Flush:
You will have a number of bowel movements in the form of diarrhea, consisting of gallstones mixed first with food residue and then with only water. Most of the gallstones float in the toilet because they contain large amounts of cholesterol. You will see mostly green ones of all sizes and shapes, some are pea-sized or smaller, and others are as big as 2-3 centimeters. There may be hundreds of stones coming out at once. Also watch out for tan colored and white ones. Some of the larger tan colored stones my sink with the stool because they are calcified and contain heavier toxic substances and only small amounts of cholesterol. All the green stones are as soft as putty, thanks to the apple juice. You may also find a layer of white or tan colored scum or foam floating in the toilet. The foam consists of millions of tiny white, sharp-edged cholesterol crystals, which can easily rupture small bile ducts; they are equally important to get rid of.
It is most likely that some stones will get caught in the colon. They can quickly be removed through colonic irrigation. If they remain in the colon, they can cause irritation, headaches and abdominal discomfort. If colonics are not available where you live, you can take a coffee enema followed by a water enema. This, however, doesn't guarantee all the remaining stones are removed. There is no real substitute for colonic irrigation.
Try to make a rough estimate of how many stones you may have by what you have removed. If you have a few or a lot you need to remove all the stones. This may require up to six or more cleansings which can be performed at 2-3 week intervals but don't cleanse more frequently than that. If you cannot cleanse this often, you may take more time between the cleansings. The important thing to remember is that once you have started cleansing the liver keep cleansing it until no more stones come out. Leaving it half clean for a long period time (three or more months) can cause greater discomfort than not cleansing at all.
The liver as a whole will begin to function more efficiently soon after the first cleanse and you may notice sudden improvements, sometimes within a few hours. Pains will be less, energy will increase and clarity of mind will improve considerably. However, within a few days, stones from the rear of the liver will have traveled forward toward the two main bile ducts exiting the liver, which may cause some of the previous symptoms of discomfort to return. In fact, you might feel disappointment because the recovery seems so short-lived. But all this shows there are still stones left behind ready to be removed with the next round of elimination. Nevertheless, the liver's self-repair and cleansing responses will have increased significantly, adding a great deal of effectiveness to this all-important organ of the body.
As long as there are still a few small stones moving from some of the thousands of small bile ducts toward the hundreds of larger bile ducts, they may combine to form larger stones and produce such previously experienced symptoms as backache, headache, earache, digestive trouble, bloating, irritability, anger, etc., although these may be less severe than they were before. If a new cleanse no longer produces any stones, which usually happens after the sixth cleanse, your liver can be considered in excellent condition. Still, it is recommended to repeat the liver cleanse every six months. Each cleanse will give a further boost to the liver and take care of any toxins that may have accumulated in the meantime.

Hi S.
I'm sure I was listening to that same radio station last Sunday talking about the Colon Cleanse. For the last 7yrs I have been taking Juice Plus+ fruit & vegetable concentrated whole food capsules. The fiber in the fruits & veggies definitely keeps things moving. After I had my son several years ago weighing (9-1/2 lbs) I had severe bowl damage from the birth which left me totally dependent on laxatives. After 4yrs of this suffering I ended up having a hysterectomy and had my bowl muscle repaired. Juice Plus+ was recommended to me as a source of getting more fruits & veggies into my diet for the important natural fiber that I needed. I became such a believer in Juice Plus+ I have my whole family including my children taking it. If you would like more information I could send it to you via email and you can also get more info from the website www.nell4juiceplus.com

So, having said that, go to www.marketamerica.com/eshoppe, register as a customer (it's free and easy to do), then check out our product called Nutra Clean (a colon clensing program). 7 days and you're done. While you are on this program here's a few helpful tips for you to get the most effective results: 1) no alcohol; 2) no food containing MSG; 3) limit or no red meat products; and, 4) drink lots of water!

Check it out and I promise you won't be disappointed. In addition, we have several products to help you maintain a healthly lifestyle. If you have any questions, email me at ____@____.com and I can help you get it all sorted out.

Hi S.,

I have used the Dr. Natura program and it's worked great! Anyone else I've ever recommended it to also seemed to have great success. It's kind of a long process but well worth it.

Happy Cleansing!

You are a wise woman, indeed, to want to take such great care of yourself. Gross? - No way!! I did a week long cleanse at a place called Optimum Health Institute some time back and since then, I eat a mostly vegetarian diet and take probiotics and psyllium every day. It works great! You can get both at health food stores. As far as the psyllium goes, just mix a little in juice and drink fairly quickly or it will turn to gel. If you don't mind eating it like jello, that's fine, too. Start with a teaspoon a day and work up from there. I take about a tablespoon a day and it has really made a difference in the way I feel.
Good Luck!

Both my husband and I used the Whole Foods Brand product. It was wonderful!! The best part is that you do not have to change anything about your lifestyle with the exception of taking the pills. I was amazed at how good i felt!!

Hi S.!

You've received a few good answers for improving your health. I agree with those who stress healthy diet (and good for you for starting this already!), getting at least 35 grams of fiber per day (this is critical), and exercise.

Be careful to avoid the "cleansing" programs that include herbal laxatives. (Several were suggested to you here, but you wouldn't know it unless you were familiar with the products or read the ingredient lists on the products suggested to you). As a herbalist, I will tell you that harsh laxatives like senna, and even cascara sagrada can be addicting. Your peristolic action won't be able to function on it's own without the herbs after long-term use. (Psyllium is considered a bulk fiber laxative, but it is safe and gentle and can be used to add more fiber to your diet).

Instead, use prebiotics (fiber) and probiotics (healthy bacteria) in your diet. Track your food intake for a week, and see if you are getting at least 35 grams of fiber per day - it's hard to do unless you eat high fiber cereal and a lot of beans! LOL If you become fiber conscious, it will get easier to make sure you get enough. You can purchase probiotics in most health food stores, Whole Foods, etc. I use a certified organic one, "In-Liven", which you can find here: http://aromatherapist.mionegroup.com/en/product/15101 I use a teaspoon of the powder a day, mixed into fresh fruit smoothies, yogurt, or over my cereal, and the container lasts me about 3 months. If you feel that you need a jump start to replenish your colon with healthy bacteria (they are killed by stress, antibiotic use, poor diet), you can try Fast-Track Probiotic Liquid for two weeks before going on the In-Liven powdered probiotic (or any other probiotic supplements).

Good luck to you in your efforts to improve your health!

I've been doing a cleanse with two products that I got from Dr. Lisa Walsh in San Mateo. One is a colon cleansing and the other Flora Support to replace good stuff.

Hi S.!
I agree that cleanses are great and necessary for us! There is a lot of gook that gets stored in our fat and other places in our body that our bodies are just unable to digest. Besides cleaning out all these areas and making room for us to absorb healthier nutrition, cleanses also help to get rid of extra weight if you ever hit a plateau with weight loss (If necessary!)
I have found an amazing product! It is so wonderful because it is a gentle cleanse, you are still able to eat a normal diet and maintain energy during the cleanse. It is made of all organic materials and just makes sense! If you want to check it out, just email me for more information. ____@____.com or call me at ###-###-####. Take care and good luck! Kind regards, J.

Psyllium seed husks are a good fiber supplement. You can buy the powder or capsules.
