Hi! My sister is planning to discuss Ablation with her doctor and I am curious to hear any feedback on it from soemone who has experienced it. She says she may have a fibroid and that may keep her from being a good candidate for the procedure. Any words of advise will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

In 2002, this was an option my Dr gave me. One of the reasons I did not do it was because he said chances were high that it would have to be done again. I'm not one to repeat any kind of procedures unless necessary. I was sick and tired of procedures and I wanted to be done.

I opted for a full hysterectomy (ovaries and EVERYTHING). I was 41 at the time. This was the BEST decision I ever made. I have been healthier, happier and all over positive from my surgery. I would make my choice again in a heartbeat.

My family was complete when I made my choice. I have a wonderful daughter and a hubby so this was the right choice for me. The hormone patch is working wonderfully. I am on the same low dose I was given when I was at the hospital in 2002. My only "side effect" has been my boobs grew about 3 cup sizes and I am loving that!!! I am 5'4", about 116#, and 34DD boobs.

My sister in law, had the Ablation about 2 yrs ago and she is happy with her decision.

Good luck,
Susan

I haven't had it, but I wanted it. Two of my friends have had it, and they LOVE having no period. However, when I discussed it with my doctor, he expressed his concerns. Now I will grant you he is an older doctor, but I've found that older doctors (or at least the ones that we go to :)) are up on the current technology, but they view it with the skepticism of seening too many fads come and go. In this case, he advised that his concern with this procedure is that if something is going wrong (tumors, etc) in that region of your body, your body may not have a way to show you. Strange bleeding that might have occurred before, may not happen now, etc. Definitely talk to your doctor. I respect mine, so I'm holding off on the procedure until more info is known about the after effects. I do think about it every month, though. Good luck!

Hi,

I had uterine ablation about 3 years ago because my periods had become so heavy that I had to change protection almost every hour. This made meetings at work or volunteer activities almost impossible. I still have a very light period each month, which is ok with me. That lets me know that everything is still functioning as it should be. I had no other problems, so can't comment on who is a good candidate or not. I do know that I am very happy that I did this. I've had no problems. My only piece of advice is that if your sister does do this, tell her to rest about a day longer than the doctor or other staff advise!

Hi Marianne,
I am 45 , have had one child and had the ablation over 1 year ago with excellent results. I also have a fibroid. My doctor said it could last up to 5 yrs and by then I will be done with my cycle anyway. My period went from 1 full week heavy and hard cramps to 3 days with only a light days mini pad. It is heaven. No cramps either. She did say every woman is different and for some it just doesnt work. She also suggested if it didnt, to try the IUD before opting for surgery. I would have but all is good. Good luck!

Hi!

I had it done in June 2006 becuz I had firoids, it worked for the first year, now I am having problems again, as a matter of fact I went to the doctor on Monday and he told me that we could do it again but I will probably be wasting my money, he told me the best way to go is a hysterectomy. For the time being he has put me on hormone pills to see if that helps but it gives me horrible headaches =( don't like them!

Just my opinion on the procedure, I wouldn't do it. My doctor told me that it is only guaranteed to work for about 2 years.

Good luck to your sister!

I had it done on June 1st. I was bleeding for 3 weeks every month. However, it didn't help me. My doctor scheduled me for differnt one (I had the novasure the 1st time). However, I got my 3rd abnormal pap (2 in 6 months) and was done with all of it. I ended up having a partial hysterectomy in September instead. I kept my ovaries so I wouldn't need to go on hormones (since I'm only 35, I didn't want to start hormones). I'm so happy with the results. Life is much better now and I'm SOOOOO much happier! Back to the ablation. There really isn't much, if any, recovery time. I had it done in my doc's office.
