Hand Foot & Mouth Virus - Houston,TX
Hello! My son has contracted hand foot and mouth from the daycare and has developed white sores all in his mouth. Isnt there a mixture of benedryl and mylanta you can administer? If so, whats the dosage? My son is 19 months old and weighs 25 lbs. Thanks so much!

You need to ask your Pediatrician.
has the Daycare told the other parents that this is going around at the Daycare? I would hope so.

Ask your pediatrician about prescribing Magic Swizzle mouthwash. Don't try to make this yourself!

This is from Dr. Sears website, but always check with your pediatrician first:

equal parts, so it doesn't matter how much but you don't need much. Then put it on a q tip of similar and swab his mouth. He is probably too young to gargle with it.
We did this when we got it and it worked great for the pain. It's for discomfort - it doesn't get rid of hand foot mouth, that has to run its course.
Stay away from citrus foods/drinks and have him drink from a straw if possible. You could make him smoothies if he's not wanting to eat. Frozen berries, banana and milk (we use coconut milk) but whatever floats your boat.
Hope he feels better soon.

my daughter had this but it never developed in her mouth. just hands and feet...and all over the rest of her body. i cant remember if the doc gave her meds or we just waited it out. but i did get some natural oils from my sil i belive it was lavendar and something else. but i couldnt really tell if it was helping or not. i got those oils about five days into her hand foot and mouth. good luck.

mylanta is to try to coat the throat to make it more bearable for him to eat. it never worked for my son - his sores were ALL in his mouth when he got it - none at all on his hands or feet. the dr. did suggest the mylanta but his mouth hurt so much i couldn't get it back there. we ended up using sore throat spray and he ate pediasure shakes exclusively for about a week before he could tolerate anything else. i really would call his pediatrician and get a professional opinion. it can be a very scary illness. good luck, hope it goes quickly!

I have never heard of benadryl for this virus, I have heard of Mylanta though. I think Benadryl is for itching and these type of blisters are more painful then itchy. I would give Motrin for the discomfort, and try to give lots of yogurt, ice cream, italian ices, smoothies etc. I would stay away from rough, hot foods. Maybe even Orajel for discomfort, if he is giving you a difficult time eating. The Orajel will numb his mouth and may give him comfort to eat. Good luck!!
