There are many public elementary schools that try to hold their school carnivals around that time of year. The kids wear their costumes. Call your local elementary school and see if they are having a carnival. Also some of the churches have non-Halloween carnivals. Hyde Park Baptist Church has a Noahs Ark Carnival around that time. Give their daycare a call.

Many of the Austin Libraries have parties and Halloween storytimes. Also many of the book stores plan events every weekend of October. BookPeople used to have the best childrens activities every Saturday and Sunday. The Austin Childrens Museum has held Haunted houses for young children sometimes at their museum and sometimes at a mall. Just call them. Sometimes the big malls will have trick or treat on Halloween night.

I pulled up the Austin Parks & Recreation and they have a list of Halloween activities for children, it shows the dates and times and locations of each activity. Pretty cool.
Most of the activities are free and the few that do cost, its only $3.00 - $5.00.
We plan on taking our son out for several Halloween activites in October, we just all have alot of fun .
Happy Early Halloween!

I'm starting to scout ideas for our 21 month old now, too. Last year we took him to the Austin Zoo - they have a special thing at night and it was really neat. The kids dress up, lights all over and they give each person a flashlight to use too. Then you get tickets for their little 'train ride' and it's a lot of fun. The surprise is they stop the train here and there and some 'sets' are put up for example a pirate ship with pirates who walk out and to the train and hand out a little bag of candy to each person on the train. It's different and fun and I think started right at sundown. Halloween is on a Sat. this year too so that won't mess up schedules. After the ride we went around to different animals and walked the whole zoo. It's not big so it won't be exhausting. We're going this year too and to a few day festivals the week prior. Halloween is our fun holiday!

Western Oaks Subdivision, SW Austin has a sweet little Halloween parade down Woodcreek Drive (starts at the corner of One Oak) and ends at our little park. Great for the kiddy set. We head out for trick or treating from there...parents are definitely very present and looking out for their children at this event.... Later there is usually a little fair at Abiding Love Lutheran (don't know the plans this year) which is in walking distance from the neighborhood.

Every year our friends meet at the Tarry Town Pumpkin Patch. It's a wonderful photo opp for crazed moms like me :) http://www.tarrytownumc.org/

AND for a more complete experience (face painting, pumpkin painting, corn field maze--the ice cream is amazing!)
