Good Camera for Less than $400? - Lynnwood,WA

I've been meaning to update our old Olympus Master digital camera. I want a camera that can take sharp pictures, doesn't look too white, can take good pictures even in fairly low light, and has fast response time. Good video output too would be nice. It doesn't have to be top-end stuff. Just good enough for family memories and crisp-clear photos. I'm considering the Canon PowerShot S90 10MP. What do you use?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, thanks! I'm curious now. Especially about the Nikon Coolpix. But which model? I'm looking at the Nikon COOLPIX S3100 14 MP Digital Camera with 5x NIKKOR Wide-Angle Optical Zoom Lens and 2.7-Inch LCD. But is any model of the Coolpix good? If I can't get the Power Shot a a Black Friday price then I might go with the Coolpix. It seems to be just what I need... home and personal use.

I just replaced my totally awesome Nikon Coolpix (top rated by consumer reports) which I wore into the ground (but it still worked great) with the newest even COOLER Nikon Coolpix which was on sale for $70. I think it's about $150 regularly with more bells and whistles than you'll ever need, but simple use and awesome quality for just plain old point and shoot. They do great movies too, and they're tiny and slick.

I'm a Nikon girl. I only have the Nikon D40, but WOW it takes amazing pictures! I need to upgrade, but that's not on the debt paydown plan. Maybe next year!

I have an older Powershot and like it a lot. Yes, it takes batteries, but I looked for that so I wouldn't be caught short (like with the Sony at work) where you suddenly find yourself undercharged and no spare. I can pick up 2 AA batteries anywhere. Had an Olympus before that and it got s.l.o.w. and didn't do good video.

I have a Cannon power shot and they are good but after also getting the Nikon D3100 if I replace I am going with the Nikon Coolpix.

I don't know if I am odd or this is normal but I like to have a smaller camera that I can throw in my purse, the power shot, but I also like the huge full DSLR for when I want to be impressive. The D3100 will not fit in anyone's purse unless they have one of those feed bag types. :p

I just replaced my older Nikon Coolpix (that I wore out in 2 years) with a Sony Cyber-shot. The top three brands are Nikon, Sony, and Canon. I also wanted a smaller point-and-shoot to carry with me. I've been very happy with this new camera. I think I paid $200 on Black Friday.

I don't like the menu on the Nikon. They aren't as user friendly as the Canon and Sony. You have to push a lot of buttons to delete, etc.

Also make sure that you get a camera that has a rechargeable battery. They still sell cameras that take disposable batteries. Ugh.

I plan to upgrade to a Canon Rebel with a DSLR in the spring for portrait settings and use my Sony for everyday use (and videos).

I love the Canon Power Shot series! I just got a brand new one after literally wearing one completely out over the last six years. It's really not Canon's fault -it has been everywhere, taken over 4000 photos, countless movies and banged up by my entire family. It takes fantastic photos!
