What Camera Do You Suggest?

My husand and I are expecting baby #2 in less than 4 weeks and we are in the market for a new camera. I am a picture fanatic and always have one in my purse to be ready at any moment. What suggestions do you have for looking for a good camera? Do you suggest one with a charger or batteries? What brand have you found to be the best? Worst? For example, my expeirence with Kodak has been that it lasts a year or less and then starts to drain the batteries. My sister let me use her Olympus and it seems to do well, but it is starting to die after about 5-6 years. What kind of zoom and pixels take the best pictures? Thanks so much for all of your help!

What can I do next?

I have a Panasonic Lumix. It takes great outdoor pictures, the indoor pictures are also very good. I've also had Sony camera in the past that were very good. However, Sony does require a special memory card. I've found that the cameras are just not made to last. Almost everyone I know is replaced theirs after 4 or 5 years.

My daughter has a color pix/cool pix, I think it's a Cannon. I don't recommend it. She hates it.

Make sure you get at least a 5x zoom. Yes, megapixels are important, but unless you buy something inexpensive, they all seem to have higher pixels.

As for batteries - rechargable!

We have an Olympus that we liked well enough at the time, but it got old and slow. It's our backup now. For Christmas the year DD was born, we got a Canon PowerShot because friends had one (different model) and liked it. It's a good point and shoot, IMO, and I'm sure there are still features I don't use/know, but it's done us well for the last 3 some years. I have 40x digital zoom and I forget the megapixels, but it's more than 3. It also takes video. I choose cameras that need AA batteries so I'm not caught short at the zoo, and that can take any SD card so I can buy more if I take a lot of video or vacation photos.

Edit: I think the CoolPix is Nikon.

I have had two Nikon Coolpix cameras. I lost the first one and had to replace. I love them. I have never had an issue with blurriness, either inside or out. It also has a great zoom. The battery is rechargeable and lasts a LONG time, even when taking video on the camera or on standby for a few weeks. I've been using these cameras since 2006. My dad and sister also have these and love theirs also. Now my dad has a Nikon SLR camera that takes amazing pictures, but it is huge and expensive! I got my camera for about $120 on Amazon.

I had a Nikon CoolPix that couldn't focus. It would take nice outside pics, but inside every shot was blurry. I swtiched to a Canon Powershot that fits in my pocket or purse and it works well. The zoom I have is 4x and isn't that great. I'd prefer a more powerful zoom - not sure if the pics would be clear though, or not. Mostly I use it to take pics of the kids. My husband has the big Nikon SLR and it's great but it's a lot of camera to lug around for everyday candid type shots. Mine has a battery and a charger. No complaints so far - only had it a year.

We have several canon cameras that are all good. If you go into a camera store you can try several out and see what you like. Most of ours last 5 to 7 years, but we use them a ton and not always in nice weather and they really take a beating. We have had two point and shoots, first one after 6 years I dropped and broke the screen, not that it hadn't been dropped before. The second one is about two years old and I love. We don't use our point in shoots as much and they last a long time. The others were dlsr cameras and well past the recommended number of exposures for the shutter. They still work, just a little slower now.
