First Horror Movie?

My son is 8 and very interested in watching horror movies. I am a huge horror fan, so I don't have a problem with the idea in general. I'm trying to decide what a good "test the waters" movie might be. He liked the new Goosebumps movie and the older TV series. He asked for Psycho or Night of the Living Dead, but I thought those were a little too much at this age. He also mentioned Child's Play, but I seem to remember some of those had some strong sexual content? So I'm going for a scary level between Goosebumps and Child's Play, if that makes sense. Thanks for your suggestions!!

What can I do next?

One of the scariest movies I remember watching as a kid was Something Wicked This Way Comes. The Watcher in the Woods also scared me! I think both were old Disney movies. Beetlejuice and Gremlins also freaked me out. With all of those, I was probably closer to 10-12 when I saw them. The Common Sense Media web site has good recommendations for age levels. I would be very conservative at that age. Anything too realistic could cause nightmares. Personally, I wouldn't want to deal with nightmares.

The Others with Nicole Kidman.
It's a great movie.

No gore, no sex, just scary and some resolution at the end so that you can talk to your child about how movie makers make scary scenes (dark lighting while filming, music, etc).

Not a spoiler...but since seeing the movie we too have a "Victor" that leaves the tv on, blankets unfolded on the floor, DVDs out, etc.

My kids liked The Mist, The Cabin in the Woods and Dawn of the Dead.

ETA: I agree with The Others, and along the same line The Sixth Sense.

I agree with some of these below. My 9-year old also wanted that step-up in scares, but the more adult, gory movies would be way beyond his ability to handle, not too mention my own moral queasiness at these films that just rack up a body count. Beetlejuice, Gremlins, Ghostbusters, the Goonies, Poltergeist (the old '80s one) are good starters. We watched Tremors, which he thought was funny, but it very quickly turned into a game of count the swear words - I forgot that it was loaded with them. We found two '80s films - Monster Squad and The Gate - that were middle ground scary picks. The Gate had one mildly gory scene that really was at the limit for my son and told me it would be a few years before he could watch truly scary movies. We had to fast forward through it.

I would say don't rush it with these movies because you don't know what kind of scene might really set a kid off and trigger big fears. I myself couldn't go into a bathroom without checking behind the shower curtain for years because I saw an ad for a remake of Diabolique when I was probably around 7. My dad had to explain the "dead" body wasn't really dead and I was still scared. :O

It's just not worth the nightmares.

I would start with some old black and white classic scary movies that kids might have gone to the movies to see, "back in the day". Frankenstein, vampires, zombies, etc. Kids only get to be young and innocent for such a short time. Why rush the yucky stuff? Once it is in their sweet little minds, it's there forever, and 8 is so young.

I agree with Erica T! I saw Something Wicked This Way Comes when I was younger....so scary! I think 8 is just too young. Once you see something that freaks you out, you can't UNSEE it. The damage is done. I'm 49 and still freak out once in awhile when something I saw in my teens pops in my head. lol JMO. Good luck!

You don't have to let him watch blood, guts and gore. Psychological thrillers that aren't too graphic or those without "sicko" content would be better. After all, there is so much to see and most of it's not good for an 8 year old. I don't have names to give you, but I would recommend that you watch the movies in advance and be strict about not exposing him too early to some of the twisted stuff that these movies allude to. Kids that are young don't process it the way adults do.
