Hi - my teenage daughter has dirty blonde hair that darkens in the winter and is beautifully streaked blonde in summer. She wants to try to recreate the summer highlights at home this spring. Any recommendations for home kits that are easy and work and look natural? Any tips to make things turn out well? Hate to spend a fortune at a salon but also worried about bad orange highlights…Any advice on product and application would be appreciated!

i used sun-in when i was that age. i wonder if it's still around.

unrelated- i hate the term 'dirty blonde.' why use pejorative language to describe a beautiful hair color? why not 'dark blonde' or 'tawny' or 'honey' or 'caramel' or 'sandy' or 'brown sugar' or 'brownette'?

I had what they called "dirty dishwater blonde" hair while growing up.
My favorite part of summer was getting those natural highlights in my hair, I so looked forward to hot summer days at the beach, lake, or swimming or even with the hose. I used to use lemon to speed up the process, but I dont really recommend it now because it does dry your hair out. But in summer lots of girls like to have that crazy, dry, blonde streaked hair.
My suggestion is not to use fake products and to just be patient and get excited about summer. Her friends will be envious, no one envies something you can buy in a box. Not that I'm promoting envy, but I know how teenagers are and your daughter wants to jump the gun. Let it happen natural!

We use to do the lemon juice or Sun In in sunlight - but we waited till late spring or early summer to do it.

You could try a local beauty school. Highlights are about $15 I believe.

I highlight my dd's hair with Sally extra strength bleach (the kind for facial hair, brows, etc.)
Even though it's not made for regular hair, it's pretty gentle and it does just enough to look natural. I just pull a tiny bunch of strands and coat them with the bleach. You really can't make a mistake because it's very gentle.

I just go to walmart and get one of the kits that have a cap that you pull the hair through with a hook. I can't remember the name but they are between $7 & $15 I think and have had great luck. I have never gone to a salon to get mine done.
