Father's Day....What to Do....

Hello all. Everyone here seems to have great ideas so I thought I would try to get some from you on this. My father will be staying with us through Father's Day and I would like to do something nice for him and for my husband. I'm trying to think of something very thoughtful and relatively inexpensive. We are planning on going to church Sunday morning like usual and we will probably go out for lunch afterwards. I'm having the kids make something for them this week. My eldest (she is 19) and I are thinking of cooking something for dinner for them that is new and good.

Do ya'll have any suggestions as to what to cook? Remember, we are not experts in the kitchen (in fact my husband does most of the cooking, lol). So it needs to be relatively simple......

What are ya'll doing for Father's Day? My husband and I have an 8 year old dtr and a 21 month old son together. My 19 year old dtr is his stepdaughter but he has always treated her as his own. In fact he's been more of a father to her than her bio father. Any suggestions of what we could do would be appreciated!! Thank you all.

Also, this will be my husband's first father's day without his dad. He passed away a few months ago so it's going to be a sensitive time for him.

What can I do next?

I think all guys like a nice steak on the grill! And baked potatoes and salad. And beer.

What about framing a nice picture of him & his dad? I bet he's love that.

ask any man what he wants and it usually either steak or bbq. i would put together a backyard bbq for them. Rather than going out to lunch and then making dinner, go home after church and start prepping. Make sandwhiches to hold everyone over. Women want to go to restaurants and try new recipies. Men want to lay around all Sunday and eat steak. I would let them kick thier feet up and you gals put on a bbq. Let your 8 yr old and 21 month old play in the water out back. Make a cheesecake or strawberry shortcake. Corn on the cobb, green salad, and some big juicy steaks. One sure fire. man pleasing way to make a great steak is Montreal Steak Seasoning. It's a bottle in the dry spice aisle. Put the steaks out on counter. sprinkle this stuff on, cover with saran wrap and let them come up to room temperature while the coals get hot. Room temp meat cooks much quicker and more evenly. Use a meat thermometer if you aren't sure how long to cook it.

What to cook? I'd go with steak. Most men like a good steak. Grill it or broil in the oven. If you don't grill, just buy some good steaks (maybe burgers for the kids to save $) and they can grill. Buy a 6 pack of some good beer, have everything ready for the grill, make some yummy sides to go with! Ribeye is my fav on the grill - the extra fat feeds the fire.

not sure if your kids are too old to get into this, but last year my girls set up a father's day mini golf course in the front yard. We collected up anything that might be challenging and fun and set up the "obstacles". We made some holes related to his interests (ex: one hole was a bunch of budlight beer cans stacked in a cool way. Another one was some of his green army like ammo cans set up in a maze.) As for food, an overnight brunch casserole would be great. Make it the day before, and just pop in the oven the morning of. recipes all over the internet. Have fun!

Grilling is great if the weather is good and you know what you are doing.

Another fun option is a taco bar - you can cook up some chicken (shred it) or buy a rotisserie chicken from the store. You can cook up some ground beef with or without onion. Then chop up different toppings - onion, shredded lettuce, cheeses (buy the pre-shredded Mexican cheese mix and come cheddar), tomatoes, green peppers, defrost some frozen corn (no need to cook, just drain it), some avocado (or buy guacamole), and so on. Be creative - you can use jicama, jalapenos, etc. Buy taco shells or heat up some small tortillas in foil. Put everything in different bowls, and add a bowl of sour cream and a bowl or bottle of taco sauce. Set it up like a salad bar and have people work their way down the line, or put it on a lazy susan in the middle of the table and let people spin to what they want. You can also make some Mexican style rice - just use regular brown rice (or white, if you prefer) but substitute tomato puree or crushed tomatoes with the liquid for some of the water. You can add some herbs & spices, or just salt & pepper.

If you guys like beer, go with a Mexican beer like Corona or Dos Equis. You could get really festive with a pinata or those crazy chili pepper-style light strings from the party store. Or just make it a food fest and let them put on a game on TV!

This is mostly chopping with not much cooking skill required! You can even do most of the chopping the day before.

Make a toast to your husband's dad or give him a nice photo of them together.

I just got frozen shrimp kabobs at my local grocery store and thawed them with a little seasoning. My husband, Dad and Mom all loved them! We cooked them on the grill and I added potatoes (with the fixin's) salad, corn on the cobb, garlic bread and dessert. Didn't do it this time but a favorite around here is Pineapple with sugar and cinnamon on the grill.
As far as anything extra special I don't have any suggestions. Having everyone around just might be enough this year.
