Extremely Irregular Cycles After Giving Birth

I have a 3 month old son. He is my second. My first was premature at 25 weeks and didn't make it. Although I had to have an emergency C-section, I healed fine and got back into my normal cycles within 6 weeks. With this pregnancy it has been different. I had a repeat c-section, and have healed fine internally and externally but, I had the postpartum bleeding from March 13 (when he was born) until May 10th. I took a 10 day dosage of medroxyprogesterone starting on the 9th. On the 17th, the 9th day of medicine, I started my short period from the medicine. I had planned to go back to the dr on the 23rd, but it stopped that morning. Then it started back on the 31st and went to the 3rd of June. From the 4th -9th I was free. Then the 10th I spotted, and the 11th started what seemed like a regular period with all the symptoms. Ok, back on track. Wrong. I went from the 11th to the 15th. Then done, and out of nowhere I was spotting again this past Thursday (21st) and yesterday. This morning when I got up with the baby, my somewhat bi-weekly (instead of monthly) visitor was back. I tried to breast feed but that only lasted for 3 weeks with pumping. I was able to stop and dry up my milk rather quickly. When I made this visit for the 23rd of May, there was once dr, who called back and said I didn't need to come in, what I was going through was normal. Well, my son will be 15 weeks on the 26th. This is not normal. Has anyone else gone through this? If so, how was it handled. It's the weekend, and I have to wait till monday to call in. FIY: I'm not on birthcontrol of any kind. I chose not too. I stopped taking it 4 years ago because my body wasn't doing well with artifical hormones.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. I know it is long, but I had to list everything.

So What Happened?

Well, Monday I went to the dr. She said she didn't know what was going on just by doing an exam. She gave me a few sample packs of Femcon(low dose birth control). I had blood work done to check hormone levels, pregnancy, and thyroid. All came back normal. I also had an ultrasound on Tuesday. I haven't gotten the results back from that, but I feel that if the blood work is ok, then the ultrasound probably will too. The dr. told me to wait on the bc until we got the blood results back, and I did. I have taken the bc for 2 days now, today will be my 3rd day (28th), but I noticed today that I'm still spotting. She did tell me that if the bc doesn't stop it after a week to call her back, it should stop after 3-4 days. We'll see. Hope this works. Thank you for all your responses.

My cousin gave birth by c-section 6 months ago and went through the same thing for the first few months. She's fine now. Hopefully it will end for you soon too. Good luck and congrats on the new little one!

Dear L.,

I don't know if I will be much help at all, but I will tell you that for the last 2 months I have been having a bi-monthly cycle. I just finished breastfeeding and have been on a breastfeeding birthcontrol. The doctor told me that due to the ending breastfeeding, the breastfeeding birth control and a lower body weight, that my body did not have enough estrogine (sorry for the bad spellling). I was told to quit the breastfeeding birth control and either just let my body balance out my hormones or go on a normal birthcontrol that has estrogen to get things normalized. My body has never been good at making estrogen, so I choose to take 2 months of normal birth control to help my body normalize itself and then will get off it all together.

I think I would make your doctor see you. When I went to see my doctor this week stickly because I felt like I was constantly bleeding, he checked me for cycst, amenia (because of all the bleeding, you could really deplete your iron in your body) and finally my thyriod.

You should not have to suffer through so many periods. Be the "squeaky wheel" and make that or another doctors see you... Something definetely does not sound right....

Good luck!
D.

Hi L.!
I would make an appt with your doctor to get some bloodwork done. After I had my son, I went to my 6 week postpartum check up where they did some bloodwork. When the results came back it revealed I had a thyroid problem. Sometimes things like that or other things found in blood tests can explain some irregularities with your cycles and system. Good luck!

The only time I had mid-cycle bleeding (every two weeks) was when I had a cyst develop. It burst and shed on the next cycle, but my doctor was very concerned when I called with this issue. I had an U/S to confirm within the week and a follow up U/S four weeks later to check that all was well again. I was concerned about my fertility at this point and DR assured me it was fine... it was... we conceived on the next cycle!
Are you happy with your DR? Maybe you should seek a second opinion. I'd want someone proactive in finding out what was wrong, not brushing me off. Just a thought.
Good luck -- I'm sure you're horribly frustrated.

hi L.,

sounds like you havent been having very much fun .. and neither did i after the birth of my 3rd baby.. i only bled for about a day inthe hospital, then when i got home i never got my period for a few months.. then i had it for ELEVEN WEEKS NON-STOP..it was horrible.. and now i havent had it iin a few months, i feel crampy every now and then like i should have it or like i feel like im going to get it,, but nothing happens.. my daughter is now 11 months old and my menstral cycle is still all messed up.. talk to your doctor, if your thyroid and blood works is fine then a low dose estrogin BC pill might help to regulate you.. from what ive heard .. depro provera ( a BC shot that you get every 3 months) tricks your body into thining that you are pregnant so most women do not get their periods while on it.. ME on the other hand i took it with my 2nd child and my period didnt stop.. so i guess it doesnt work for everyone.. another side effect of it was because my body was thinking i was pregnant it was holding onto and storing every calorie i put in my mouth, i was excersizing and dieting like crazy and i gained 15 pounds.. how ironic.. anyways hope you and your doctor find a way to solve your problems.. good luck and take care
