Eliminating Sugars

My duaghter Allie who is 5 1/2 suffers from these rashes like sores. Originally the Dermatologist thought is was eczema but it really doesn't follow those symptoms. She sort of looks like she has a case of the chicken pox or misquitoe bites that have been scratched to the point of bleeding. Anyway, I'm still exploring a number of options but something that has come up over and over is her diet. The allergist who she has seen claims she is not allergic to anything (but when she touches certain things she will break out, they call it an irritant) We did try no dairy earlier this year with no results. I'm thinking about eliminating processed sugar. But the more I look into it the more overwhelming it seems. My husband and I both work full time although summer is coming and I will have the 3 months off (I'm a teacher) I would appreiciate any helpful hints or strategies or even if this is worth trying. I've tried many things already with no luck. She also get staph infections regularly. She has had 2 in the last 3 weeks because of the last "Best thing ever" I tried.

What can I do next?

Hi N.
If you think you may ever want to cut out refined sugar now would be the time to do it. It will be hard but just start little by little. We are in this process right now. I cut out all high fuctose corn suryp and started using cane sugar. You will want to get a membership to a natural food store. I think you also may want to look at the laundry soap and body wash you are using. I am very sensitive and have only found 1 laundry soap that does not cause a reaction for me. If you would like to talk more or need more info please send me a message Good Luck in this diffucult journey. :)T.

Hi N.,

You have to first ask yourself a lot of questions:

Start a journal about the things he eats.

Children are more susceptible to toxins. Their skin is more porous so things get absorbs at much higher rates than adults.

What kind of laundry soap are you using? We sleep on sheets, wear clothing washed in laundry soap. Look at the ingredients on the labels of bath & body products that you are using on him. There might be something that is a trigger.

I would rule out all the topical stuff first, then go after food allergens.

There are several good books to read: The Safe Shoppper's Bible" by Epstein & Steinman. There also websites that can tell you which products to look out for.

The safe shopper's bible has warnings on alot of things including foods.

Best wishes,

J.

Ohhh N. ...

What can be worse than watching our children suffer ... I have an immune building idea for you after growing my baby girl on natural yogurt from our goats milk who is now a tri-athlete and an OB-GYN with her own baby girl almost 3 years old now.

I have some life learned and wonderful lessons about Yogurt and YOGURT CHEESE made from Yogurt that will replace and substitute all heavy creams, sugars, sauces, mayo mixes, etc. etc. etc! Done in a ton of ways... I do mine with Instant Non-Fat Dry Milk Powder ... from bulk.

DE-LISH ... NOU-TRISH. YUM-OH !

Let me know if you 'wish' more information...

Oh... and btw, Yogurt Cheese FREEZES beautifully for anything coming up.

Hoping you're having a fabulous week end and enjoying our sun - yippy skippy Minnesota ! HA,

Eliminating sugar IS a daunting task. Something that makes it easier is a sugar substitute called Xylitol. It is NOTHING like Splenda or Nutrasweet....Xylitol is safe and completely natural.
You can bake with it too!
It gets easier with time. Her body will adjust within a few days and in a couple of weeks, anything with refined sugar will be overly sweet to her taste.
Have you tried giving her kefir? It's almost like a drinkable yogurt. Read the labels as some of the flavored types contain sugar. We buy plain kefir and flavor it with cinnamon and stevia.
Oh yes, some other sugar substitutes are agave nectar, honey, and stevia.
Good luck!

Have you thought of bringing your daughter to a natural path? They will more than likely take a stool sample. It's a wonderful way to help in a more natural way. We found our daughter was fighting with a form of yeast being produced by sugars and dairy products also causing rashes on her skin. We now know how to treat it (without medications) when she starts to show signs. Good luck!
