Early Words
My son is 8 months old, he's been doing the dadadadada thing for about 1 month now and only really gets the mamamama out when he's upset. About 1 week ago, he started saying "UP" as soon as he wakes up or when he gets bored with whatever activity he may be doing. He's recently combined "UP" with "Dada" when he wakes, my first son started out with the typical mama and dada. Not alot of people believe that he is saying the word "UP" until they actual hear him. Anybody ever hear of a baby combining words so early??

L.,
My daughter is also 8 months old, and doesn't really talk much at all...she babbles a lot and says "rararara" and "bababababa" and clicks etc, but nothing like mama yet, although i'm starting to think that "ra ra" means mama to her. she also clucks to call the cat, like we do. however, she crawls and pulls herself up, goes from sitting to crawling back to sitting, recently started cruising, and can stand on her own for a few seconds at a time. all signs point to the idea that she'll be walking within the month. i've heard that babies choose to work on one thing, either the talking or the walking. i don't know how true it is but she seems to be more physically oriented right now....sometimes i wish she'd say mama though!

My son is 9 months old and says UP also. He has been crawling around the house saying DADADA but does not associate Dada to his father. He also says "KA" when he sees the cat, says "BA" when he sees either his bottle or his bathtub. He is on the verge of just busting out. I think he knows what "up" is but just can't seem to say the other words he wants to so badly. I am just waiting to go get him one morning and hear him say Hi Mama.

My oldest (almost 20 years ago) was speaking full sentences at about 10.5 months. I didn't realize it was odd but people commented on it all the time. She was my first, so I didn't realize it was odd. So, every kid develops at their own rate. You could have an early talker like I did. My 2nd daughter grunted until she was 3 years old. I think the older one talked for her and she had no need or desire to communicate. We called her the cave baby. ;)

By 13mos. my son was speaking in full sentences. Most people probably thought I was exaggerating. My son crawled late, walked late and learned to jump and climb late, but when it came to his vocab and verbal development... he was way ahead of others his age. I don't remember exactly when he started putting words together, but it was before he turned 1, which is when we made a list of the words he spoke and it topped 200- including words like strawberry and triangle. Since then he has memorized books and made words like conveyor belt and exhaust part of his vocab. He's 3.5 now, and doesn't stop talking! So, if it makes sense to you, just keep teaching him and encouraging him to repeat you. Don't let others tell you it's impossible if you're hearing it with your own ears.

My 2 year old has been a slow speaker.. Its worried me.. but then she'll just randomly say things... At around 10 months, a little after your son she used the word "Up".. She even used it correctly, when she wanted to be picked up. I was just watching some old video tape of my sister, whos 10 years younger then me.. And she said "ready set go" at 13 months. I think when children have older children to look up to they learn things alot quicker. Sounds like you're going to have some fun :)

Hi L.,
My son also started speaking very early. He's not yet 2 and can tell whole stories now. The only down-side is that people often assume he is older then he really is. Keep encouraging his language and you will be amazed at what he can come up with at such a young age.
Good luck,
K.
