My 4 1/2 month old has an ear infection. I give him Tylenol for the pain but was wondering if there was anything else I could do for the pain..... I remember when I was a child, my grandmother used to put warm drops in my ears. She is now gone and I don't know what it was.

What can I do next?

Sweet Oil works WONDERFUL!!! You can get it at most drug stores over the counter. Warm it a little by running under hot water or just friction from your hands. Just be sure to still take them to the doctor.
Good Luck! Hope you're all feeling better soon!

I agree with Brandi, sweet oil is great for ear pain. I have used it both for myself and for my girls. It is safe and works almost immedialty to relieve the pain. I have never heard of it causing the ear drum to burst. That definately has not been our experience, but if you are unsure you could always ask your doctor or pharmicist.

Have you got her on some antibiotics yet? If so then the tylenol might help relieve some of the pain, but the antibiotics should start to remove the infection from her ear and it will relieve a lot of the pain. My cousin's son had an ear infection and his doctor said he needed to be on liquid lortab fopr kids because his infection was so severe that he could not stand the pain.

Do not put warm dops in the ears. That is why I have hearing loss today. They used to think is was good because it releaved the pain, but what it did is cause the ear drum to burst and that drained the ear. Then the pain would decrease. The eardrum will heal itself. But long term there is hearing loss. It was warm oil they put in.

My doctor prescribed ear drops which I don't have right now so can't tell you what they are. Ask your dr for that, they will know what it is. I think that helped a lot when my youngest had ear infections.

Similisan drops are Awesome but expensive and Hydrogen peroxide always works in a pinch but it takes a little longer to work. You have to force them to stay on their side for 8-10mins, but after about 2-3mins there's always a huge sigh of relief all of a sudden in every kid of every age (infant-adults). Put a little in the ears so you can see it bubble out and tug at the ear just a little so it will drain. You'll see wax bubble to the top...pretty gross and weird, have tissues by and keep his hands away from his ear and the Hydro Perox. This has ALWAYS worked with us...never once failed for any of us and it's worked for all of my friends and family I've recommended it to. In fact, my sister-in-law was telling someone else about it the other day when I saw her.

I have never looked for ear drops before, but here is some info I have found on the Web:

From http://www.drgreene.com/21_1767.html:
"Topical drops specifically for earache relief are also now available over-the-counter in the eye/ear care section at most drugstores, grocery stores, and discount superstores throughout the U.S. These drops have a long history of use in other countries where antibiotic usage is not as prevalent."

And from http://ezinearticles.com/?Ear-Pain-Relief---Quick-and-Eas...:
"If you don’t have any medicated eardrops available to use, here is a household remedy. Warm up some garlic, vegetable or olive oil and put a couple of drops in the infected ear for ear pain relief. You need to make sure that the oil is warm and not hot. If the oil is hot, you can cause permanent damage, such as affecting your hearing.

There is an easy way for you to check to see if the oil is warm or hot. Apply a drop on your inner arm to see if it is okay to administer in your ear infection for fast pain relief."

Perhaps this 2nd idea is what your grandmother used. Or if you would rather buy something from a drugstore, I would just go in and ask the pharmacist what he/she recommends.

(NOTE: I just re-read the age of your son. If it were me I would just go ask a pharmacist what is available for his age, and possibly ask the pharmacist about the home remedy.)
