Dog Potty-ing in the House!

My dog is a 2 year old beagle. He has been doing pretty good since we got him last November. For the last week he has been having several accidents in the house. We take him out several times a night and he will still have an accident in the middle of the night. How can I resolve this situation?

What can I do next?

You may want to take him to the vet, he might have a bladder infection since this is not normal for him it soulds like? Has he been neutered? Lots of people told me this helps with male dogs and peeing all over.

Did you take him to the vet? It might be a UTI. If he just started doing this, something may be up. Also, my dog doesn't go all the way when she goes out. We have to take her out, stand with her and remind her to go. She gets distracted, tries to come back in (especially if it's raining) so we have to keep reminding her to go.

Good luck!

We had this problem with both of our dogs at different points. First thing I would suggest is to put up the water bowl after, say 7-8pm. Our dogs are actually gated upstairs with us at night so they don't have access to water. Does he have a kennel? Does he sleep in the room with you? Dogs will not go to the bathroom where they sleep unless it is an emergency. If you keep him confined to his sleeping area, he will hold it.
Also, once they start, they'll keep doing it especially if (1) you are not catching them in the act so they don't have immediate consequences, and (2) if you don't get it thoroughly cleaned up (they smell where they've peed before and therefore think it's ok to do it again). If it's on tile, then bleach works. If it's on carpet, try either Febreeze or the Arm & Hammer Pet powder (let sit and vacuum up).
My biggest problem is when one starts, the other then thinks it's ok. Argh!
If it continues, you might consult the vet because he may have a bladder/kidney issue.

Sounds to me like he might have some kind of infection so you might want to take him to the vet. The other possiblity is that it is realatory. My female dog would pee on our bed if she got mad at us (no joke!) and she would pee on the side of the person she was mad at! Yes, she was that good or bad (LOL). So you may look at your schedule and see if you have been spending enough time with the dog? Has something been overlooked (i.e. not fed that night), etc. Also, what has he been peeing on? Is it something that belongs to one person? Like I said, it could be a pay back. I certainly wouldn't discount it...dogs are a lot smarter than people give them credit for.

For the time being, I would recommend either crating him or putting him in a room where it will be least amount of damage but still cool (laundry room, basement, garage, kitchen, etc.). Cleaning up on tile is a lot easier than carpet. Vinegar works really well on getting the smell off of tile or hard wood. It can also work on carpet as will (beleive it or not, Vodka - and no it won't smell like alchol...Vodka once evaporated has no smell). I've had moderate success with the Baking Soda and absolutely no success with the usual carpet cleaners and Fabreeze. They are only topical and an overall waste of money in my book.

If you confine him to a certain area he will not have an accident. Our dog is locked in our bedroom overnight for this same reason. If he still has an accident then I would take him to the vet to see if anything is wrong medically. Maybe a UTI or kidney infection. Good luck!

If your dog had been fine until recently I would take him to the vet for a checkup. He may have a bladder infection.

I agree with the other posters. Our dog suddently started having accidents after almost never having them. The vet gave her some medicines and a new canned dog food to use for a few days to settle her stomach adn voila in less than 24 hours she is doing well!
Good luck!

I was never a big fan of kennels, but have seen the light. We kennel our dogs at night. They each get a tiny treat after they go in. That has made them really good about walking on in on their own. They settle right down, and have never had an accident in the kennel. We started doing this when we added a second dog to our family, a pup. I had always read that using a kennel would make housebreaking a breeze, but never bought into that.....until now. It really did the trick. I do think getting your boy checked for any type of medical problem would be the first step, though. Good luck to you; I hope it all works out just fine.

I'd take him to the vet to rule out a bladder infection or other cause. Considering he has an accident after going out all night, I'd think it was a physical issue.

Good luck!

My first suggestion would be to take him to the vet to see if he has a bladder infection. Most dogs who are house trained do not regress for no reason. If he has no bladder infection and is otherwise healthy, I would start removing his water after 7 or 8 at night...and if that doesn't solve it you will have to consider a kennel for him to sleep in at night.

S., if this is the first time you have had this problem, I think it warrants a trip to the vet to make sure he doesn't have a bladder or kidney infection. Lots of luck

You could try putting him in a kennel or cage overnight. Dogs won't usually soil where they sleep.

Has it occurred to you it is the heat. Granted I had Golden Retrievers with those huge coats but when it heated up like this those dogs would not stay out long enough to go properly. They never had accidents unless it was above 90.

Good Morning S., one way to curb the accidents at night is to Kennel your beagle. Amber my little Shih tzu was 1 in March, she has always been kenneled at night, or if we leave for a couple of hours. This is what most breeders recommend. Then in the morning, you take them outside to do their business. If they don't they go back in the kennel again for 10 minutes then outside again.

I don't have a doggie door so I have to keep my eye on her to see her hints she needs outside. Or she goes out at least once every 2 hours. But really the key to no accidents at night is the kennel. Dogs won't mess in their sleeping area's. Amber now all I saw in night night time, Kennel and in she goes. It took a while, but she never barked or whined when she was learning this. She has Mis Mousy to sleep with also. Stuffed mouse. Her kennel is in the living room. I do put her in there when the boys ( gr son's) are eating as Zane likes feeding her Cheetos, and cheerios!!

When your teaching your dog to go to kennel, give them a small treat when they walk to it and go in. Praise him for good dog. Ours is a black wire kennel with a bottom tray, (all one piece) and Amber has a pink fluffy to sleep on. It is easy to set up and fold up if you want to take it with you on a trip or something.

Try this site also, good information.

I would definitely take him to the vet to get checked out. It sounds like a possible urinary tract infection. Our vet usually just treats with a course of 10-day antibiotics and the infection clears up.

When you let him go outside several times a night, is he actually peeing or just "posturing" like he has to pee? I know it's hard to determine this at night, but you may want to go outside with him (with a flashlight) and see for yourself is he's actually urinating or just posturing like he has to urinate but doesn't.

Again, I would call your vet asap and get him on some antibiotics before it turns into a bladder infection.

Good luck.

I have heard of dogs having infections just like people. You might take him to the vet to get it checked out - maybe he really can't help it!

Have your dog checked out by a vet. There maybe a bladder infection or some other medical reason for the dog to potty in the house.

Well since you said the dog is male my question would be is it fixed or not? cause or dogs all three are unfixed males and through the spring we usually have issues of them wanting to mark territory. they also started acting up by fighting with each other. we figured out that they were smelling a female in heat and it affected their behavior. so if he checks out healthy at the vet then it probably is just a behavior issue. I haven't had a lot of luck with the kennel idea since most of my dogs didn't care if they slept in it or not.

maybe he just needs more exercise of which provides one on one attention too. all animals are smarter than we give them credit for and let us know in their own way when they are not happy. if your house stays cool enough you can limit the amount of water he gets especially later in the day since some dogs will drink even if they are not thirsty.
