Do You Prewash and Prebag Your Fruits and Veggies?

We do!

Normally we all sit down and do it togehter, so it's a learning experience also. The kids count how many of things go in a bag (carrots, grapes celery, broccoil, and strawberries tonight.) I just started doing this at the start of this school year though and it makes my life so easy!

My kids all pack their own lunches (with the exception of the new 5 year old, we still make his sandwich) and it makes it very easy for them to just grab a bag of veggies or fruit. Plus it makes snack time very easy.

We also have a snack bucket with pre-approved snacks: gummies, raisins, granola bars, etc. - though they still ask before taking anything.

So I'm jsut wondering, does anyone else do this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

We don't prewash apples and such...we'll have to eat the strawberries quickly...but everything else stays nice and fresh! We use the snack size bags because they are for lunches and snacks. So it makes it easy when the kids (and hubby and I) don't have to pack up almost 50 containers of fruits and veggies. I also got 2 cantaloupes and a smalll seedless watermelon. Those we'll chop up when we're ready to eat them and store in a larger container :).

Prewash, yes! My kids "steal" fruit and veggies all the time, but don't think to wash them. Pre-bag, not so much. We use reusable containers for lunches and snacks. I wouldn't have enough containers for everything. I avoid baggies when possible, they just seem wasteful sometimes.

I do premake salad (I dont buy the premade bags) and keep it in a huge tupperware container so its ready to go. We all eat a salad almost every night with dinner and sometimes I have it for lunch and its ready to go.

Just last night I thought I should do this with my carrots and potatoes, wash and have them ready to go, but I don't, they are just in the drawer in the fridge. Same thing with berries, although I dont buy them often.

I have started to separate bananas, its true that they last so much longer when you do that. =)

Oh, and we have a big bucket for packaged snacks in the bottom of the pantry too, the kids ask first if they want something out of there.

Yes I wash them.

My kids are 5 and 9.
I don't pre-bag.
My kids can pack their own lunch when/if they take home lunch.
Unless it is something I have to cook.

My kids get their own snack. They know where it is.
They ask before hand.

Each kid eats different amounts. Thus I do not pre-bag.
And I don't have time.

But everything is washed/dried and ready to eat.
I don't like to pre-cut fruits because, if it is not eaten right away, I don't like it getting brown or soggy. Then that is wasted.
My kids grab a fruit or veggie and eat, when the urge strikes. They know how.

Some veggies and fruits go bad faster if they are put away wet. But I bet it's a real time saver for some things.

Don't you wash off all the grocery store preservative by washing? Kidding! We don't do this, but what a great idea.

I used to but I'm not that organized anymore. The one thing I wouldn't pre-wash and bag when I did it was berries because they rot a lot faster that way. It's definitely a good idea.

Yep! We do a vinegar wash and bag everything up. We also have snack buckets. One in the fridge, and one in the cabinet. Makes everything easier!

Meh--depends whether I wash everything after I get it home or as needed.

I don't "pre-bag" for lunches or snacks though.
Of course, my son usually buys his lunch at school.

As far as the snack bucket--we have a nice square teak bowl in the pantry and individual snacks go in there--healthy AND unhealthy--all intermingling!

I'm with S B.
We wash everything, but don't use baggies.
