Yup Im on strike two as being a mom today lol

Am I the only one that doens't enjoy going to my kids concerts? Our vocal teacher is horrible! She has the girls sing in a way to high of a voice, out of thier ranges ( unless they have a talented singing voice) and the boys way to low/ high for their changing voices. The kids don't sound very good. Its this way even in the lower grades ( middle school/ high school have the same teacher) I know they are learning in the younger years in band.. but all the squeak off pitch playing drives me nuts.

Honestly after like the 4th grade I don't like going to them. Besides the way it sounds ...the hurry up and get dinner done, eat, the kids cleaned up and in thier dress clothes ( usually finding some random missing item) and out the door. Sitting there for 1/2 hr while they are getting ready in thier class room. The line of cars coming home. All the kids up past thier bed time. The next morning getting them up after being tired.... I know Im negitive here... I just can't bring myself to look forward to it.

So am I alone on this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I loved going and watching my kids while they were younger! They are so cute up there. Its after 4th grade that I don't like ( plus all the rushing before and the struggles after/ next morning)

My kids don't like going either. They do a great job with what they have to work with. They usually all beg me to let them miss it. But its such a huge part of thier grade or I would. They are so embarassed with the way they sound.

I loved going to my kids concerts and performances.
I really did.
What I didn't care for was parents who talked and got up and walked around when their own kids weren't performing or they let their kids run all over and scream their heads off so no one could hear anything.

You know....for some kids, it takes an awful lot of guts to get up in front of everyone and either sing or play an instrument. The fact they even try makes me proud for them, even if they aren't my own kids.
I never felt the need to "grade" the quality of the performance, but the quality of the audience was often pretty poor.
Other than that, I have loved attending.

Sorry, but I love going to their programs. Knowing so many of the children for so long. Knowing they worked so hard, how excited they are.

Maybe consider a babysitter on those nights so there is not so much stress for you before these programs.

My husband and I miss being able to attend our daughters school events, she is now in college 2000 miles away. It goes by super fast.

I just have one son (and didn't have him until I was 39) and I love going to any concert he's in. He's in the Orchestra and I love going to his concerts and he's in Taekwondo and I enjoy watching him doing that as well. My son is precious to me!

That's very unfortunate you have a bad teacher, it really does make such a difference, doesn't it? If you can focus on other elements besides the quality (hum a little something inside your head) it might help -- how brave they are to get up there and perform, how proud of themselves they are, what a special thing they are trying to share. It might move you more to think about the kids more than the singing.

I love the school performances at our elementary school, even when my kids aren't in them-- especially the Poetry Slam and the Talent Show. The guts it takes to get up and perform, the creativity on display, the complete commitment kids make when performing -- it's all pretty cool.

We are only in pre-k, but I really enjoy going...it's not so much the talent, but rather watching my daughter so excited show me what she's learned. I agree, it is usually a stressful evening to get us all dressed and there, fight for a seat, etc., but I enjoy seeing my daughter's face. :o)

? Yes, I think they are sweet. My little smiling cutie(s) is up there, just beaming with excitement and pride. It's quite a lovely memory. Hey, they aren't professionals, so I wouldn't expect professional sound...that's why they are performing at school, and not Broadway. It's a fun thing to film as well!

One thing a parent for certain should enjoy is the PROGRESS that is made as well.

I save my critical ear for popular musicians/singer... boy, there's a LOT out there that suck! lol:)

(and OH MY if when I was a child and if I thought my mom hated going, my heart would be CRUSHED... and I'm referring to all performances up until I was in 12th grade)

When my kids were in elementary school they had the most fantastic music
teacher. He loved his job and the kids loved him. Therefore, it showed in
their performance. When they hit middle school again a great teacher who
did great songs. Fast forward a few years, teachers both elementary
and middle/high school left. Then the concerts became painfrul. The kids
even knew it. The high school kids had to sing songs in different languages
and songs that they could not relate to at all. It showed. They missed their
old teacher. I did love the elementary performances (even with the new
teacher who did not relate to the little ones). Now I go to my grandchildrens
and love it.

Hated the choral concerts until high school. The main reason is that they now play music that is so loud you can't even hear the kids, or they even have the kids sing along with the taped recording. It's horrible.

As for the instrumental, I actually enjoy those. The beginning violins are hard to take with all the squeaking and redunancy, but the band has alway been good. Our middle school puts on a great instrumental concert.

I liked the school concerts. I remember racing from one end of the high school to the other when Daughter had a concert the same night as Son had a wrestling meet. At least they were at the same school. :) I do object to the parents who get up and leave (noisely) after their child has performed. I made sure I could leave without disrupting.

I actually like going to my kid's concerts. Our JH and HS music programs are awesome! The one negative for me is how long they can be. The HS orchestra teacher needs to learn to edit for time. My daughter had a orchestra concert a few weeks ago and we didn't get home until almost 10pm. My husband went to our son's choir concert a week later (I had had surgery that day) and they were home before 9pm. I love going to the Christmas/Holiday concert but, since it's the whole music department at the high school, it takes FOREVER. And they do it twice, usually Tuesday and Thursday.
