i've always used a kodak easyshare but am looking at buying a cannon or nikon... nothing expensive (would love to get a rebel!) but $100 to $300... i'm looking for something better for red-eye and prefer rechargeable batteries... any suggestions?
I say go with Canon. I just upgraded from an Olympus to a Canon 770. My husband also upgraded from an olympus c8080 to a Canon Rebel and we are loving both of the new cameras. Easy to use, lots of variations to get the best shot possible, and lightweight, esp the Rebel.
Hi, I am not sure about the less expensive cameras but I have the Cannon Rebel and love it and its my understanding that the cannon's are more unser friendly than the Nikon's...

I bought a Nikon D40 in April and I love it. I got it at Wolf Camera and took one of the free classes. It is very user friendly. You can leave it on "automatic" and it is virtually a point and shoot. I've had no red eye problems and have gotten great pictures. I haven't had a Nikon before, but I am told that this one is much more user friendly than their older models.
If you are just wanting a "point and shoot" type camera, then I suggest the Nikon Coolpix cameras. I loved the one I have. I still have it, but my husband gave me a digital SLR camera for Christmas (also Nikon) and I find myself using that one most often. The SLR type cameras, like the Nikon D-series (and the other ones mentioned in your replies) are really great. They do much more than a typical point-and-shoot, but they are more expensive and may be "more camera" than you want.
I have always used a Kodak easyshare too and just recently bought my first SLR. I bought the Canon Rebel and love it. I suggest spending the extra $100 and buying it. Plus, when you buy at Best Buy they offer an accident plan for a little over $100 for four years that is very worth it.
After owning our camera about a month my husband fell on some rocks while we were on vacation and my camera fell in the water. We took it to Best Buy, they sent it in, three weeks later I got a letter saying it couldn't be fixed and to go get a new camera. The only real set back was that they didn't have one in stock. For a few hundred dollars more I was able to upgrade! With the accident plan once you use it you have to purchase it again, but I got a camera that was over $600 for less than $350 when I did the upgrade! Very worth it!
Love my new Canon! Nikon is cheaper and when I talked to the people at the camera shop they said there isn't a lot of difference, so personal preference! I hope this helps!
I went from a big bulky Kodak to a tiny canon powershot elph and I can't tell you how much happier I am. Clearer photos, shorter lag time between shots, and a slew of really cool features like auto face detection and color accent ( which lets you make the whole photo black and white except for one color which you choose). I love this camera!! The newest model is the 1100, and I think it runs around $200. It does ok on red eye, but all the other features outweigh that one shortcoming. Not sure if the 1100 does a better job of reducing red eye, it might. The battery is a rechargeable.
i have a nikon d40, and the pictures are great! however it is big and not easy to take everywere. so for mothers day my husband got me a cannon powershot 1100IS. i love it, of course you have to wait a couple of secs inbetween pics. but after talking to the lady at best by that was a photographer she said she prefered that one, and i do to. it is small and easy to use and in your price range the d4o is not. good luck. i would go to best buy and talk with some one and play whith them. good luck
About a month ago I bought the new Nikon Coolpix p80. I love it. It is a point and shoot, but it has some features similar to SLR cameras. It is also very easy to use. What I like best about it is the sports mode. It can take up to 30 frames per second in this mode! The pictures are amazing. The guy at Wolf Camera said that they could not keep them in stock. I paid about $280 for the camera. Good luck!
I purchased the Rebel xTi and I love it. I cannot imagine using anything other than a Canon now. Good luck with your decision!
