Difficult Time with Molars

My son (turning two this Sunday) seems to be having an unusually difficult time with him Molars. Monday he spiked a fever, Tues, Wed, Thurs he barely ate, kept asking for medicine and was constantly putting his fingers in his mouth and chewing on them. Today he is coughing and has runny nose and is feeling miserable. I guess a cold and teeth issues can run concurrently...?? I took him to the doctor yesterday and they don't see anything alarming. Did anyone else's 2 year old have this hard of a time with their back teeth coming in?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for their advice. Why does it make us feel better when you know others have gone through the same thing?? The little man is actually doing better today, eating more today than he has the whole week.

he most likely doesnt have a cold. the runny nose and drooling can run to the back of throat into lungs causing coughing. In my daughter she swallows it and vomits. Happens with every tooth she has gotten but one. Once teeth are in symptoms disapppear!

My daughter was about 16 months when it happened and it was soooo hard for her. I tried to make her comfortable as possible - she was run-down, slept more wouldn't eat (I pushed the fluids though) and had a slight fever. That's in part because they get so worked up. I've learned the more they cry the more the blood flows to the painful areas, thereby causing more pain. There is nothing wrong with using the night time Orajel on the gums in the day, it has a bit more pain formula in it - because the molars are nothing to sneeze at; it really hurts more. I gave her a frozen rag to chew on as well as chew rings and 1/2 dose of tylenol every 4 hours. You also should know that certain teeth run along sinus lines, causing the runny nose.

There's nothing alarming about what's happening, nature taking its course and just really unnerving because they're in pain and you feel so bad for them...

Good luck and it'll be okay!

We think my 20 month old is starting to get his. Last week he had a fever and just today at daycare he refused to eat anything. He has also been drooling like crazy and chomping on his fingers. We also have the added bonus of runny diapers - something he had when his other teeth came in.

From what I remember with my older one and what other people have told me, the molars take longer to come all the way through. Good luck!

A million kids have the same symptoms. Stuffy head, runnynose, drooling, fever, etc. Doesn't mean he has a cold at all. These are symptoms of teeth coming in. Keep him hydrated and warm. How's his appetite? Gums are most likely sore so softer foods are recommended.

Oh I remember those times. You stand by and watch helplessly because they look so miserable. If he has a fever the baby tylenol will help bring it down (make sure it's okay with doctor first). Just keep loving him and hugging him. It does end.

Could just be a runny nose from the teeth coming in and cough from post nasal drip.

My first kid had a really hard time with his 1st set for sure! When his first one was coming in, he as just screaming and screaming for 1/2 hour minimum, and I had no idea what was happening. Figured it out a couple days later. We just used Ibuprofen a lot and those Hyland's Teething Tablets.

My second little guy is currently getting in 6 teeth at once (late teether). 2 molars, 3 lateral incisors and a cuspid. All on the top except for 2 of the incisors! He's taking it pretty well. He's cranky, but teething tablets seem to be enough.
