So What Happened?

Well, my poor little man has open sores on his rump! The ped prescribed what she called "butt goop" or "poop goop". It helps cut down the acids in the poo and has a wild concoction of different items. I know a few are vaseline, aquaphor, nystatin and some others. Seems to be working. Been "airing" him out, which is fun with a boy :) Also, trying to find cloth diapers to have him in during the day which will also help! Thanks for all the help!

baking soda in the bath will help take some of the painfulness/redness out of it. If it's really bad I'd do it a couple times a day.

Good old corn starch, like you thicken sauces with! Works wonders on keeping the diaper area drier and helps clear up rashes. Also Boudreau's Butt Paste works fairly well, but is more spendy. If it is a yeast infection, you'll need something else...

Sounds like a yeast infection. Our son got them after antibiotics. You'll need to get something from the doc but it goes away immediately.

We had the same reaction to the Amox. We use A&D Ointment and the rash is gone.

I agree to call the pediatrician - none of us can give a medical assessment over the internet not having seen the rash itself. It could be a number of things including the original infection that put him on the amoxicillin.

So, the advice about having the pediatrician write a prescription for a cream is a good one - our son had one that created open sores and lots of pain. We ended-up having it compounded by Rx - it contains an antibacterial, an antifungal, and anti-inflammatory, and an anti-histamine to try to combat the major causes of diaper rash.

Good luck. A few agonizing days went by, but it will get better - please just call the pediatrician.

My son used to get awful rashes anytime he had diarrhea which just ended up making him being sick worse. When I say bad - I mean open sores, chapped skin - BAD. Nothing seemed to help. We were on vacation in Ohio when one hit. A local pharmacist recommended a local brand you can order online Pinxav http://www.pinxav.com/ He was seeing relief almost immediately (once he calmed down from being cleaned off) It made a HUGE improvement in the first 24 hours, he was out of pain. It was cleared up in about two days. Just amazing.

I've now used it, and only it with three different children. I am a believer - it's awesome. :)

I also do a bath with Baking Soda for immediately relief. It soothes burns, rashes, etc. My kids always get a lot of relief from it -- and then if you can -- let them air dry for a while.

You may want to do 2 things:
1. Get him on a probiotic (Shaklee's Optiflora is guaranteed to deliver the good flora to the intestines)
2. Get Shaklee diaper cream. It's organic and wipes off more easily during cleaning.

You can order online and have them sent to your home.

Feel free to ask your doctor about these. :)

I always had wonderful luck with Aquafor (by Eucerin). It's thick like petrolium jelly so it coats and covers the sore area and protects it from additional wetness that causes the diaper rash. My 1st son had TONS of ear infections along with the delightful side effects of the medication and we could always count on the Aquafor to heal him up fast.
Best of luck with the rash!

PS - re: the projectile vomitting. When my son first when on amoxicillan I gave it to him on an empty stomach once and within minutes it (along with a full 8 oz bottle) was all over the place. I believe it says it isn't supposed to be given with food, but my Dr. indicated that it's better to give with food if that's what will keep it down. BTW - not sure if they told you this, but if he does throw it up, don't give him another dose right away, just stick to the regular schedule, because you don't know how much was absorbed into his system before he threw up. Just thought I'd add that since that was my first question.
Again, good luck with it all!

I really like Butt Paste, however not all moms do. It seems to really help with the burning and with both my kids I used it exclusively and their rashes usually cleared within a day.

My daughter was recently on an antibiotic for an ear infection and it caused her to get what I thought was diaper rash but was actually a fungal/yeast infection (just looks beet red with little red bumps). The doctor said it is very common for babies to get this reaction from certain antibiotics. The doctor prescribed an ointment and its clearing up quickly! I was so glad I called the doctor to ask for some diaper rash suggestions because I was treating it with Desitin which wasn't working. If it is just diaper rash, you should try to leave his diaper off as often as you can which will allow it to dry out and use Desitin or another diaper rash ointment liberally with each changing. I know its just the worst when you are trying to change them and they are crying in pain. Your heart just breaks.
Good luck...i hope he feels better!

Try calling your pediatrician and letting them know that the rash has gotten pretty bad. Ours would always call in a prescription for a cream called "Happy Hiney". He wouldn't require us to bring him in or anything, he would just call it straight in to our pharmacy. It's wonderful to have that prescription strength cream on hand. =0) You can try lots of other OTC creams, but nothing wipes it out quicker than the prescription. Good luck! I know it's no fun for your little one.

This is for sure a yeast infection caused from the antibiotic. Call the dr right away and get nystatin (sp?). This is the only thing that would help my baby after trying many different things. I would skip everything else and go directly to this before it gets worse. Keep the diaper off as much as possible and after wiping up (with warm water only, not bum wipes) use a blow dryer on cool slow setting to completely dry off. It will clear up. Good luck!

First of all it's not a diaper rash. What your son has is an acid burn due to the diareha. So treating him for a rash is not the right thing to do. Go to the store and buy some plain malox (liquid) and aquaphor. In a small bowl mix up about 1/4 each until it gells together. Put this on your son and his behind will clear up within 24 hours. The malox will nutralize the acid in his stool and the aquaphor will provide a barrier. Good Luck.

Oatmeal baths or baking soda baths, let him lay on a thick towel without a diaper on (this way you can just wash the towel) and I personally prefer the balmex and the aquaphor diaper creams.

I would say hands down the BEST diaper rash cream I have encountered is Burt's Bees diaper rash cream. My daughter, now 3 1/2, had a lot of rash problems. I tried everything, and burt's bees was the only one that could pull it's weight with any of her diaper rashes. It is pricier, but trust me you end up using less and have a happier baby sooner.

It's probably a yeast infection. This is often the kind of rash developed when a baby is on antibotics. I would buy some antifungal cream and put on it. If it gets better, then you know that is what it was. I've used Lotrimin creams - they work well. You can also put hydrocortizone 1/2% with it, but may not be necessary.

You need to give him acidophilus, which is a probiotic, to help replenish the good bacteria in his body that has been killed by the antibiotic. The rash is probably a yeast infection and not likely to be affected by any butt cream or paste; it needs to be handled form the inside out. Antibiotics are really tough on a child's system, so it is essentail that you replace the good "stuff" that the antibiotic kills. If you go to a local co-op, they should have some great priobiotic chewables, or you can buy the refrigerated form (that is not shelf stable) that you can mix in food and beverages. You will see great results in a day or two. Good luck!!

I don't know if this rash with respond, but my duaghter used to get BAD diaper rashes sometimes, and her butt weould be RAW, the BEST STUFF we found and have used forever more was called "Triple Paste" it comes in a big white and blue round tub, and a little goes a long way. It would make a vast improvement in just one application. They sell it at Target and WalMart and Walgreens. I swear by the stuff and I give it as baby shower gifts, along with my homemade wipes recipe.

Maybe you should try homemade wipes, too? I swear they made my kids much less irritated down there, and helped keep diaper rash away. Here is the recipe:

Cut a paper towel roll in half (plain white Viva or Bounty towels work best) to make 2 shorter rolls

put in an airtight container with a lid....Rubbermaid makes a 3 qt. canister that is just right, you can get at WalMart - or a washed out large plastic coffee can with lid works too

get a measuring cup and fill with 2 cups warm tap water, add in 2 Tbsp Baby wash, and 1 Tbsp Baby Oil ( whatever brand you already use for baths)....mix up with a wisk or fork

Pour liquid over towels in container, then pull out cardboard tube in the middle to start the wipes! Keep covered, lasts for weeks, depending on how many diapers you change per day!

Good Luck!

Our daughter had a fungal rash after taking amox, and there is a perscription (nystatin I think?) or our ped recommended lotrimin from the pharmacy (like you would use on another fungal infection). She also said that cortison can help clear it up, as well!
Good luck!

It could be a fungal/yeast infection from the antibiotics. That's a pretty common reaction in kids to antibiotics. Give your pediatricitan a call and they can prescribe an antifungal.

It is hard to say what is is- call ped.
I use Melagel on my kids rashes and it works great. You could also try a lotion to help the poop from sticking and making it worse. Try a pool or hot tub to help dry out as well.
Good luck!

My child had the WORST diaper rashes, she'd be in tears from them. Air dry as much as possible. I always used Desiton (sp). IT was thicker so stayed on longer. At night, in her bed I'd let her sleep naked. I protected the bed, limited drinks before and let nature take it's course. i'd check on her numerouse times throughout the night, change the bedding if needed. If it's nice outside, let him run free. Give baths. Good luck.

1) I was given the advice to put Maalox (yep, you read right) on a votton ball and wipe on butt. It instantly soothes the irritation so you can continue to change the diaper (my som had it so bad he hated diaper changes 'cuz it hurt.) I thought she/her advice was a little crazy BUT quickly found it instantly soothes since it is an acid reducer/killer.

2) Another woman advised Lotrimin (the foot fugus as it gets tha bacteria).

3) as always had good luck with Desitin as it was thicker. Some have good luck with Boutreaux Butt Paste.

Good Luck!
