Okay, ladies. I need your help. My 6-month-old has major crusty-scaling cradle cap. His ped. says there's nothing I can do and that he could have it still at 10 yrs. old! I've tried to use a comb on it, I've put shampoo on his head at the beginning of his bath to let it sit there until the end of the bath, and I've limited his shampoos to every 5-6 days instead of too frequent. I feel there's something out there that will treat this. It doesn't bother him at all, its just unsightly. I'd LOVE your suggestions!

So What Happened?

THANK YOU!!! I absolutely love this site, you ladies are great! I used olive oil- he loved the head-rub -and it really worked great. I'm going to try the baby oil in a few days just to get the rest. I can't believe it was so simple. Thanks again!

I've been advised to "scrub" it with the infant hairbrush to try and get rid of it. I'm still dealing with it a bit. My pediatrician said a gentle dandruff shampoo was fine, and I've also taken to putting olive oil on her head for a little while before bathing and then washing all that out.

Hydrocortisone! My pediatrician presecibed a 2.5% cream and it cleared up overnight. I have also used the 1% over the counter strength and it works too- just not as quickly.

Paul Mitchell Baby No Cry shampoo is a miracle! I have used it with 2 of my children and it takes care of the cradle cap with ease. I used the shampoo and also a nail brush to scrub the scalp. With babies with no or little hair, it also helps to blot the scalp with tissues after bathing. It helps prevent crust from forming again. Our cradle cap problems were gone with just a couple of shampoos and scrubs.

My first baby had it bad too..I rubbed baby oil into his scalp, you know, massaged it in and then let it sit for a while..then slowly scraped it off. It wasn't painful for my baby and it came off very easily. After that, whenever I gave him a bath, I would shampoo his head and then massage his scalp so as to slough off the dead skin cells. Hope this helps

My boys both had eczema and cradle cap. I was introduced to the baby products with Arbonne International and they worked fantastic. Everything is botanically based and is pure safe and beneficial.

If you want more information Check out my website at www.NicolesNaturalBeauty.myarbonne.com.

The products definitely work wonders.

I don't think there is a miracle cure because my daughter is 11 months and we continue to struggle with this. I have found that Neutregina T-gel helps more than anything I've tried. You have to shampoo it in and let it sit a few minutes. My doctor recommended a dandruff shampoo and I tried a few others before, and the Neutregina worked the best. I also put burts bee's apricot oil on her head afterwards and then comb through. It seems to be in control, but I do notice when I stop the routine, it comes right back... Only use the dandruff shampoo every 3 shampoo's. Hope this helps!

The only thing that worked for my youngest was to rub oil )you can use baby oil or olive oil) into his scalp, let it sit for a few minutes, and then scrape it off with a comb. The process was a little bit messy but the cradle cap never came back. Of course, you'll have to shampoo the oil out when you're done.

baby oil is definitely the least expensive, but i think you can buy cradle cap kits too. i think we got a gerber cradle cap kit for our son & it worked really well - better/faster than the baby oil, but i remember it maybe being a little harder to find.

good luck - you *can* get rid of it!

We used Gentle Naturals Baby Cradle Cap Shampoo on our daughter and it cleared it right up. It is in a green bottle and has pictures of winnie-the-pooh characters on it. HTH

My son came home with terrible cradle cap (we adopted him from Guatemala) at 11 months. My pediatrician said to rub baby oil on his head before his bath (let sit about 10 minutes) and then take a soft tooth brush or rag and gently scrub it, then use mild soap to wash it out. We did that and it took about 2 weeks to get rid of it.

I wish I would have been told earlier to use olive oil the same way. I have heard the olive oil works much quicker.

Another note change your shampoo to a natural soap such as California Baby, Jason Baby or Just for Kids shampoo available at Whole Food, Fresh and Natural Foods & other organic grocery stores, some BabiesRUs stores and Target has a small selection of organic section. These shampoos are organic and made very mild.

Our adopted son gets severe eczema from other soaps and when it is very cold & dry. My husband sometimes had used his bar soap and caused his eczema to flare up. I will never again use another soap on him because I do not want to ever risk the eczema and cradle cap returning.

Good luck

My daughter (now 5 1/2) had cradle cap when she was a few months old, but it was not major. I rubbed baby oil into it, started with massaging it in, and then scrubbed gently. Then just rinse it out with warm water. You can repeat the process as often as you like - just don't get her scalp irritated with too much scrubbing. She may find the rubbing/massaging of her scalp rather relaxing.

You can use dandruff shampoo (Head and Shoulders works pretty well). Or smear lotion on it after the bath and throughout the day (we used Eucerin when my younger son had it). Or you could try rubbing some olive oil on it about a half hour before bathtime then wash it out.

Olive Oil works well too. Just be sure to comb it out like others suggested and then rinse.

We used mineral oil and Selsun Blue shampoo. Rub the mineral oil (mineral oil works better than baby oil) on to baby's head. Put a hat on his head for an hour or over night. Comb out the mineral oil with a comb (dry skin comes with it) and shampoo with the Selsun Blue. We did this at Regoins on the Pediatric floor and I used it on my son when he had bad cradle cap. It took care of it. good luck!

I agree with Kris S. Our hair stylist told me not to use any other shampoo other than Paul Mitchell baby don't cry and that was almost 20 years ago because of the harshness pa the chemicals they use so that the shampoo doesn't burn their eyes. I was shocked, but it truelly worked with my first 3 children. With my 4th we had to get a little more aggressive. The pediatrician recommended sebulex shampoo we were worried that there would be permanent damage. So we would alternate between the two shampoos till he cleared up. Now my daughter is going through the same thing with my grandson, she went and got the baby don't cry and he has pretty much cleared all up too.
Good luck! Looks like you have had some great advice. I'm sure something will work for you.

Let me guess, you are using Johnson & Johnson baby shampoo or some other store bought baby shampoo. My son had the same problem and it continued until he was 2 years old when Kids Hair recommended switching to the Paul Mitchell baby shampoo (called Baby Don't Cry), 3 weeks later the problem was gone.

Baby oil baby oil baby oil. That was the miracle cure for my son when he had it. I also work with kids and it has worked for all the babies I have suggest it for. Just get the scalp wet, rub baby oil on it and take the baby comb and gently scrub until it comes off. It takes a while to wash it out but its well worth it. Good luck!
