Cowboy Costume for Kids

Hi Moms,

My 4 year old son is having a Western day at school next week. Kids need to be dressing up in a cowboy costume - with cowboy hats, bandannas, boots etc..

I really do not want to spend a whole lot of money - just for 1 day.

Any pointers on where I can find these for kids at a reasonable price?

Appreciate your response.
Thanks,
M.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Definitely go to the Dollar Tree. Their stuff doesnt last long, but what do you expect for a dollar? :) I know they have stuff for pirates, cops, and girly things so you might be able to find cowboy stuff too. No boots, but you should be able to find a hat, bandana, etc.

Maybe check for a cheep halloween costume? I know hats can be really inexpensive, they also aren't the kind that will last very long or hold up to vigorous banging around. Bandanas are about $1 at Walmart. Maybe ask around to borrow the boots, this seems the most expensive part of the costume and to wear only one day wouldn't be practical to purchase unless your son wears them more often.

I would skip the boots, buy a bandana (cheap and reusable for other costumes such as pirate or hippie), and make a paper bag vest out of a brown paper grocery bag:

If your bag has handles, remove them.
On the side without a store logo, cut straight up the middle of the bag.
Cut a circular opening in the bottom of the bag to become the neck opening.
On each side of the bag, cut another circular opening for the arms
Cut fringe along the bottom
Cut out a paper Sheriff's star and glue it on.

I'm not sure what to say about the hat - you may be able to find a cheap cowboy hat now that the Halloween costumes are out. Maybe at the dollar store?

Hello,

I was at Dollar Tree off of Snell Ave. and Blossom Hill Road in San Jose and they had cowboy halloween sets not sure exactly what it entailed ... I have girl who really isn't into that stuff. You can always try Goodwill of Salvation Army.

Good Luck,
S.

Have you heard of FreeCycle? It's a network of people who post things they don't want anymore or ask for things (like this) that they need. The person receiving picks up from the person offering. Only free items.

The network is organized into separate Yahoo Groups by community. Do a google search on FreeCycle and your community (or a neighboring community) and then request to join the group. I bet you would be able to put together the costume in a couple of days. I've been amazed at how much traffic there is on the website and what types of things people are exchanging. It's a great network.

Good luck,
D.
