Constipation - Brooklyn, NY

Just seen that my daughter has constipation. Nothing severly major, just hard round pellets in the usual stool color. She does sound and feel unconfortable when she is having a movement. I had started her on oatmeal ceriel, but switched her to rice ceral due to an allergy she was getting. Could it be the rice cereal, the transition to solids? What should I do to get rid of it. thanks.

What can I do next?

Its probably the rice cereal causing that because it is a lot harder for babies to digest. My baby is described a laxative called glycolax and it works so well! Just a little bit every other day and she goes to the bathroom comfortably. Good luck!

My daughter had a real issue with constipation. Pears and pear juice are really helpful with this. I know you can get both in the baby food isle. Welch's used to make a half gallong of pear juice, available in the dairy case, but i have only found it at Quality Market.

My son is on cereal, & my doctor said that it may cause constipation. Also, they recommended, to help with that to give him a little bit of juice during the day (25% 100% juice & 75% water. Since your daughter is 6 months you may be able to introduce juice to her diet, but definately check with your doctor first. If you call your daughter's pediatrition I'm sure (s)he will let you know if she is ready to try juice or not, most babies are ready at 6 months, so it doesn't hurt to ask! Good luck! I know how upsetting it is to watch your baby in pain trying to go! I hope you find something that works for her.

Yes, it's the rice cereal. When my now 6 year old son had constipation as an infant I was advised by a doctor to put dark corn syrup in his formula. Put 1 tablespoon in every bottle until she has a bowel movement. Then slowly reduce the amount until you aren't using it anymore. Dark corn syrup won't give her a bunch of sugar because it's unrefined, and the body doesn't digest it. So don't worry about it making her fat. She'll probably suck down her bottles faster though. :) Good luck.

My pediatritian recently advised me to try "brown sugar water" with my infant son. The recipe is 1 tsp. brown sugar to 4 oz. water. This should be fed in addition to all other feedings. Your daughter may only drink a few ounces, and that is fine. Good luck!

Talk to her dr about it. My daughter had that and the dr gave us a laxitive for her. I believe it was called Lactolose or something like that. But it probably is the transition to solids.

Morning C.,

No problem at all. Buy a little prune juice from the store. Then put it in a bottle and make sure it's room temp. of course. If you're using a 4 oz. bottle, put 1.5 oz. juice and the rest water. One daily bottle of a little prune juice and some extra water will help your daughter to have more regular, less strenuous bowel movements.

If you find as she gets older that she still has a bit of an issue, then I recommend Juice Plus. If you haven't heard of it, then let me tell you quickly. Juice Plus provides all the benefits of real fruits and vegetables. They have been dehydrated and for adults put into capsules...for children into gummies or chewables. I take them as well as my two boys. I started them on the gummies at two years old. My sons are very healthy and providing them with Juice Plus is great, because I can't always get them to eat as many servings of fruits and veggies everyday as they should. If you want more info. about the benefits you can go to pathasjp.com.

Good luck. I'm sure everything will be fine for your little angel. :)

Hi C.

We just started our daughter (5 1/2 months) on solids a few weeks ago, and the doctor told us with the rice cereal especially, she may become constipated. He said if she did, to try a VERY SMALL amount of the stage 1 prunes (less than a teaspoon). Perhaps give that a try. Or call your doctor and see what he/she says... Good luck!

C.,
Rice is not the prefered food to start infants on because of the constipation. Try adding sweet potatoe to the cereal. It will help the contipation and also aid digestion all around!
I wish this information was shared at every pediatritions office!!!

I know they always say rice is binding, but my daughter who is now 1 1/2, when she used to get constipated I would give her the Gerber prunes/apples fruit. That seemed to push it through in a few hours. I know they also have the little containers of just prunes (stage 1). The other is stage 2, which is a lot. Just try a little bit!!!

definitely could be the cereal, if you are interested in giving her juice, you can try a little white grape, it should help.

My daughter has always been a bit "dry" and was always pushing really hard. I regularly gave her either watered down prune juice or just stewed pitted prunes and pureed them to use in her cereal or just straight. Most baby food brands have jarred prunes now. Recently I've been doing up her bottles as 2/3 soy milk and 1/3 yogurt smoothie (she has always had the soy milk, I'm not huge on dairy). Her bowels have been fine with little to no prunes and I think the friendly bacteria in the yogurt is to thank.

Try giving her prunes, or a small amount of prune juice in her bottle, that may help.

Try a teaspoon of mineral oil in her juice or milk. It is orderless and tastless and really works.

Give her a little bit of prunes, or prune juice. It works wonders!

my 6 mos old gets constipation with oatmeal and rice cereal so I don't really give it to her a lot.

Juice works pretty well. Since you are starting her with solids, you can mix a little pureed fruit in, as well. The little stage one jars of fruit in the baby aisle.

I don't know if you are breast or formula feeding, but if you are nursing, try to get in an extra session or two a day for a little while as she makes the transition. The extra fuilds helps a lot.
