Closet Organizer for Kids Closets

Do you have closet organizers in your reach in closets with sliding doors? If so, and you could do it all over again, how would you change the configuration of the hanging sections and the shelves section?

We want to have closet organizers put in my kids closets but I'm not sure how to configure them. They both have those annoying sliding doors on their closets. We really don't have the space to replace them with accordion doors. Right now the design is 3 equal sections double rods for short hang, long hang in the middle and shelves on the other end. My concern is the sliding doors, I'm concerned we're going to have a hard time accessing the middle section. The kids need shelves for toys/games, etc. They each also have boxes of clothes (hand me downs, they haven't grown into yet) and other non toy items stored in the bottom of the closet and on the top shelf that I'll need to fit in somewhere. Mostly likely under the long hang section but I'm thinking I won't be able to get to those boxes in or out due to the doors. How do you organize the clothes, toys and stored items in your kids closets?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for sharing your experiences (and closets) with me. The consensus is to take the doors off the closet which I agree I just have to get to where I'm ok with that. My kids don't keep their closets very tidy and that on top of their cluttered bedrooms doesn't thrill me. I guess I need to focus on the functionality. I did find some nice curtains at IKEA that hang with metal grommets that would make them easier to open and close. Thank you again for sharing.

Rearrange it and put the storage stuff in the middle section. You really DON'T want the kids accessing that stuff when they get to the point that they show interest in it. Been there and every box of grow into stuff was opened and she went "shopping" for new clothes. I had a mess thigh deep to re-wash and re-sort and re-store. Out of sight=out of mind. I'd put the games and stuff in a general family area so the whole family can play them together but that's just how we do family time.

Sliding closet doors are a pain and accordion doors do need some space to operate.
I had a tiny room when I was growing up.
We couldn't fit my bed in the room and have a door on the closet at the same time.
So we took the closet door off altogether and put up a bead curtain.
They can be very pretty.
If your kids are young and you are worried about choking hazard, then consider hanging a decorative sheet or towel or curtains up as a closet door.

I know some very neat and organized families who have removed the sliding doors on the kids closets. They like you said they just get in the way.

I would go to pinterest for ideas that match your needs.

I was a partime nanny a long time ago. One of the mom's had the same problem. We took the doors off and put up some nice curtains--kid design. It made it easy for her toddler to get into the closet to play with the few toys in there. And it made it easy to design the closet for easy storage and access. We put clothes that were not ready to wear in bins and put the larger sizes/off season clothes on the top shelves and clothes that would be worn within the next few months under hanging clothes and shelves. It made it easy to figure out what came next.

The closet was setup so there were 2 horizontal shelves the width of the closet, on one side there was a row of vertical shelves, 2 feet foot wide, and then a shorter shelf with wire baskets and a pole under that for hanging clothes. Then there was a dresser in the room for little things like socks and underwear etc. This was a toddler so it worked out well.

We had Elfa, design storage and organizers for our closets. This is what the Container store sells.

The house was so old, you could not hang clothes and have the closet doors close, they would pop open! The container store figure out the problem for us. We loved them.. It was worth the money..

we do have shelves and/or organizers in all the reach-in closets, but the configurations differ depending on the focus of each closet, ie if there are a lot of hanging clothes going in, obviously there are fewer shelves and more hanging areas.
sounds like the main problem isn't the organizers but the doors. our awkward little linen closet in the main bathroom can't handle a door without interfering with the door to the bathroom itself, so we just have fabric hanging over it. could you do something like that?

Our boys have the wooden drawers set with hanging on both sides.

We took the doors off the closets - I know many people don't like that - but I couldn't stand the doors anymore, they end up getting in the way. When we go to sell the house?? I'll put a new set on - until then? they are off. Now I don't have to wedge myself or my kid to see what's in the back, behind the wall.

No toys are in the closet. All the toys are in one location in the house, in the family room, in a shelving unit. And now that my boys are 15 and 13?? Those are about to be put out to pasture as well. I've marked my calendar for the last 6 months on when they play with them....and it's been a no-go...so they don't need to stay anymore...

shelving units for games is the best - they can stack and be seen.

Good luck!

you put the out of season clothes in those areas so you only need to get to them when the seasons change. Also the long hanging stuff in the middle because then you can still reach it from either sliding door. the area that's closed off is really only about 6 inches so you should be able to reach that .

we put the shelves in the middle in ours so the toys could be accessed but were not impeding getting in and out of the closet. its harder to get to the middle space if the shelves are in the way.
