Can anyone offer me advice for cleaning urine from a mattress? My 5 year had an accident (the first in a year and I had moved the pee pad to her sister's bed!) and I wonder if I can steam clean the top of the mattress. Thanks in advance...!

What can I do next?

My 9 year old recently had an unexpected accident. After stripping the bed, we poured a huge box of baking soda about 1/4inch thick on the stain and set a fan in the room (not blowing on the bed :) )to circulate the air and help dry it. Immediately the baking soda started absorbing the moisture and overnight it all dried. Then we used a shop vac to vacuum it up. There is no stain, no odor no nothing! Good luck!

Try 'Nature's Miracle'. I believe that they sell it at Babies R Us, Walmart, Target. Its is clear in color and removes urine.
Used it on our mattress when our dog had a problem. Worked great!

Hi J.,

Happens all the time to us. We use an enzyme cleaner, such as Nature's Miracle or any other cleaner that actually says "enzyme cleaner." Firt soak up as much urine as possible with dry cloths, then heavily spray the area with the enzyme cleaner (soak it). Let it set for 5 min., then begin using the extractor/steam cleaner. Put a fan on it to dry quickly. And you should be good.

Take care,
D.

Try Sol-U-Mel to eliminate odors of all kinds, including pet odors, smoke, and other strong odors. You can spray it in the air or on surfaces. It break down the pee and get rid of it along with the odor.

I wish I'd known these things last year! We have Select comfort bed, and my daughter came in to sleep with me when my husband was gone on a trip. One big puddle later...

I called Select Comfort help line and they recommended "spot cleaning". Not helpful. My husband said to hell with the warranty, just unzip it and take it to the laundromat. I washed it in cold water and Woolite and dried it on the lowest setting for about an hour and a half. It's absolutely fine now. It didn't shrink, thank God.

Our daughter has the same type of bed (full size) and we have covers for it. They're not just for toddler beds anymore. That's what I would really recommend in future, getting covers for any beds she'll be lying in! (I have covers for her pillows also, since she has a wicked ear infection right now. But that's another story!)

We do! My 5 year old is a HEAVY sleeper and has accidents once or twice a month. We finally put a pee pad on her bed, as well as my 3 year olds bed, but he doesn't have accidents. But my husband would always clean her bed with Bissel furniture cleaner and then steam clean it. Hope that helps!

Okay, this happened to me last year. This is what I did, and it worked (meaning no stain left and no smell left):

I took a few big sponges and soaked up as much pee as possible, rung them out, cleaned them then dipped them in warm, soapy water and went at the mattress with that. I repeated putting warm soapy water then soaking up the water with a towel then doing it again about 3 times. I then just used water to rinse it, then I soaked up as much moisture as possible with more towels and when it was dry as it could get with the towels I stood the mattress up against the wall, had a fan facing the wet part of the mattress and kept it on there all day until it was time for bed (I started the process in the morning of the accident).

It worked well. Just make sure the mattress is fully dry or else it will develop a moldy smell. Steam cleaning may push moisture too far into the bed, I don't know... All I know is that my method worked. Maybe there's an easier one out there, though?
