Cleaning My Face....

So we have hard water and I have never had problems with acne or anything. I have some rough patches that will literally 'peel' off if I rub it - as though it is either mineral build up, dirt, or dead skin.

I have tried exfoliating soaps and gloves (to scurb it off) but nothing has seemed to help. I recently had to have my hair 'clarified' to remove a lot of excess mineral build up from our water in our town so it wouldn't be a huge surprise if that is what it is- I just don't know how to get it off my face!

Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I use a scrub I make right at home which sounds like it would work for your situation:
1/2 cup white sugar
2-3 tbs olive oil
2 tbs honey
a few drops of tea tree oil

Mix all these together into a paste. Shouldn't be too runny. I gently massage this on my face everyday in the shower.
Hope this helps!

Get one of those sonic cleaners--the Clarisonic is the best one. Spendy, but worth it. I totally lust for one of them.

It sounds like you are over-cleansing your skin at this point. Unless you are very young, you should probably not be using a scrub, especially if you do it frequently. Scrubs can be very harsh on skin, and cause a build-up of dry, damaged skin.

No, you don't have water mineral build-up on your skin.

The best cleansing routine I ever discovered, is to use first a creme cleanser, followed by a soap cleanser.

The oil in the creme cleanser first adheres to any build-up on your skin, and then the soap cleanser takes it off.

For two decades, I have been first applying Aubrey Seaware, found at health food stores, followed by a gentle liquid cleanser like Neutrogena. You don't have to over-scrub. Fifteen seconds of massaging in the Seaware, then I leave it on for a few minutes to adhere to the skin cells, then I shower and at the end of the shower I do a quick, light cleanse with the liquid cleanser.

The process of the oil cleanser followed by soap cleanser is the same idea as when you are trying to get rid of any build-up, such as with cradle cap. And it works.

And if you do a scrub, the one suggested below sounds good, primarily because there is oil in it. But you should scrub very lightly and briefly.

I also was getting dry patches on my face. I saved up several Sephora gift certificates and used them to buy a Clarisonic Mia...just got it about a week ago. Pricey but so nice! They get great reviews and I'm so happy with mine. I honestly see a difference already!

Hi S., If you have tried exfoliating soaps and gloves my next thought would be a tonic after you cleanse your skin and before you apply moisturizer. Have you ever done a whole skin care regime? I sell skin care products that can brighten your skin and tone it as well, take years off your face and reduce the size of your pores. I'm 42 and I get compliments on my skin all the time, especially since I have started using this skin care. It is amazing. IT takes care of oily skin, dry skin, rosacea, sensitive skin, acne prone skin and aging skin. We sensor your skin to find the 4 products our of 9 that are perfect for your skin and it is like going to the store and saying I want S. L skin care. I can show it to you if you would like and let you try it out and I know you will be amazed with how great your face feels.
If you think you would like to try it out let me know, you can either come to me or I can come to you, I live in St Charles.

You didn't say how old you were (I'm 33) or if the patches were a relatively new thing or if they cover a lot of your face but if it is what I have (sounds the same) nothing really helped me except a prescription called Klaron- there is a non-brand name version too Sulfacetamide that I got instead eventually. It was very reasonable with my insurance. It came out to $15 every 3 months or so. It is a clear gel you apply only a bit of after gentle washing. It took about a month of daily use, but eventually my skin was soft and no more patches. It also helped me with uneven skin tone. The doc said I had roseacea and excema (sp?) I tried lots of over the counter stuff first for a few years and eventually went in and was prescribed this.
