Cake Pricing

Hello, I am looking at cakes for my sons birthday. He wants something with race cars, but now all the supermarkets mostly have are the edible pictures or flat pieces of plastic that just lay on the cake for decorations. I think this is tacky, especially for a little kids birthday. So far I have only looked at Sams, and didn't see anything so I asked if they could decorate one with a road and I would buy some Hot Wheels and just place them on the cake. I was told they can only do what is in the book. So I was thinking about going to Sweet Imaginations in Burleson. I've eaten cakes from there before and know they are highly talked about. I'm just concered about the price. I know the bakery prices are higher than the supermarkets. I can't see spending a lot of money on a birthday cake. Can anyone tell me the average price for a birthday cake from there that would need to feed about 30 people?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great advise. Well, I took my son to the party supply store to get his goody bags and he saw Batman and decided that's what he wants, not race cars. I went to my local Wal-Mart, this is where I usually get cakes, and they had a couple of Batman theam cakes to choose from. I would love to be able to make my own cakes, I just don't think I have the artistic ability to do it. I also don't have the time to do it on a busy day, such as a day with a birthday party.

Walmart has some pretty good cakes and they are not bad prices.
If you were looking for a hot wheel cake they have one at tom thumb I dont know how many it feeds I think it was only 20 dollars or so. They just put the cars on the cake.
I dont remember the prices.. But they were not to bad..

I had a similar situation for my grandsons birthday as he loves cars. You can type in Betty Crocker off-the-road cake on google and it will give you a picture and a recipe on how to make your own cake using a cake mix and two loaf pans. You can also take a picture of a highway or racetrack to Albertsons and they will make a cake with that picture on it. (They needed 3 days advance notice to do this and I do not know your time frame.) You could then buy the hot wheels cars and place on the cake. I did that for my in-laws wedding anniversary with a copy of their wedding picture and it only cost me the price of the full size cake which was about $16. Good luck.

I've had good results from Tom Thumb (N. Collins). I'm extremely picky when it comes to design. I took in a picture of what I wanted and they came pretty close to replicating the design. They only needed a few days notice and the price was very reasonable!!! I did use Icing on the Cake in Arlington, also requesting a race car them2/ 2 tier (could have used 1/2 the size), but it was expensive and they need AT LEAST 2 weeks notice. Let me know if you want to see pics and I'll send them.
Hope this helps!

A "good" and unique cake won't be cheap, but "Icing on the cake" in A. is one of the best bakeries. Kathy Martinez is the owner and they make some awesome cakes. YOu can check out their website at www.kathysicingonthecake.com

I've used Albertson's for my boys birthday cakes for years. They have several cakes with race cars. I believe they have several where you can pick the Nascar car driver (Tony Stewart, Dale, Jr., etc) Their cakes range from cool, to aahh, and of course they have several for the grown ups, too. Their cakes are reasonably priced and you can even have half the cake white and the other half chocolate. They only need 24 hours notice. Their cakes are good, too. The cakes we get usually range in the $20-ish range depending on how many guests we are expecting.
I'm a working mom now and my boys are 12 and 8. They still look forward to going to Albertson's to pick out their themes for their cakes. We live in SW Fort Worth.

We use Sweet Imaginations for all of our party cakes - kids and adults. They do a wonderful job and the cakes taste FABULOUS! I do not think that they are that expensive - I think we paid 30 dollars for our last cake from there and we had LOTS left over (but it didn't last long!) The cake just tastes so much better than the grocery store cakes - and Sam's/Wal-mart's cakes I think are very dry and tasteless. I would rather pay a little more and get a beautiful and tasty cake!

While I love making my own cakes, when I can't I love to get cakes from Hot Chocolates. They are in Hurst. I'm in west Fort Worth, and it is very much worth the drive. www.hotchocolates.net; ###-###-####. They are also doing some fun workshops for kids this summer.

If you don't find what you're wanting, have you ever considered making the cake yourself? I have NO artistic talent whatsoever, my stick figures are even pitiful, but surprisingly, cake decorating is not that difficult. I never took a class, I just purchased a decorating kit from the store (comes with the icing tips and directions), and I just practiced on a cookie sheet before I actually did my son's birthday cakes. You can make frosting (Wilton.com website has a recipe that is good for decorating, or you can buy frosting ready to go at Michaels or Hobby Lobby). I've made my son's birthday cakes all 3 years- a star, a train, and Mickey Mouse, with good results and lots of compliments, and it wasn't that difficult, just takes a little time. You can get cake pans fairly cheap, which is what I've done, and wilton.com also has decorating directions for all their cake pans (I've gotten pans from ebay, but you can also buy them at michaels or hobby lobby). I've seen car cake pans (Nascar and the disney character from Cars, so several to choose from)at all those places. Just a thought...

Hi M.,
I make custom cakes in my home. If you are interested, email me. I can send you pictures of some cakes I've made and I promise it will be moist and delicious.
You can either find cakes online to find one you'd like or I can make it coordinate with plates/napkins for the party. There are lots of options for how it can look. I just did a volcano/dinosaur cake that was 3 dementional for my son's 5th birthday. The kids & adults thought it was awesome!
Depending on the amount of detail you are looking for (more detail = more time) I would think you could get a cake for 30 people for around 40.00.
Also, other people's suggestion to make it yourself is a great one to save on money. This is especially the case if you are buying cake supplies you will use over and over for future birthdays. JoAnn has all the cake decorating supplies you could want and it isn't as hard as you think. I think JoAnn's has decorating classes too. Check out www.wilton.com for decorating tips too. Good luck, maybe I'll hear from you! A.

I bought my son's last two cakes at Target. They do a great job, they're tasty and not just flat. In fact, I'm pretty sure they have a cake with a Hot Wheels car. Check out they're book, they have lots of options.

I would just get something close to what you want or else make the cake yourself. Your son is only 3 - he won't care what the cake looks like nor even remember it later. The artistic value of the cake will be lost the moment you cut it, so I say just get an affordable one and spend the extra money on an extra gift or a fun activity later.
