I was wondering what brand/kind of vitamins you give your kids? I have a 2yr old and have been giving Flintstones - just like my mom gave me as a child. I asked the dr. and he said that was fine, but lately i've heard some negative things about them. Was wondering what do other moms use?

Also, I've been reading a bit about probiotics on here lately...how many of you use them? what kind? does the dr recommend? I've never heard of it before now...is it safe for little ones? just looking for some info...thanks!!

What can I do next?

I use the generic Poly-Vi-Sol with iron from Costco, she has been on those since she was 6 months old. She has done great with them and actually likes them. I really do not know much about the probiotics, so I can't be of much help there.

This is excellent:
http://www.vitacost.com/Alacer-Emergen-C-KIds-Multi-Vitamin

If it doesn't seem to be what you are wanting do a search on the site for kids and a bunch should pop up with reviews from customers. They have a flat $4.99 s/h. I would also suggest using www.ebates.com when ordering online since you get a percent back.

I give my son - 4 yrs old - the Walmart brand Equate children's chewables. Your vitamin should have a low concentration of sugar. It's hard to find, because w/o the sweet taste they won't eat it. :-) He also gets a daily dose of Nature's Way - Primadophilus (probiotic) powder for children. I mix the powder w/his milk. I started giving him vitamins right before he turned 4 - when he decided to be a picky eater w/veggies. If your 2 yr old is a good eater w/his fruits & veggies, he doesn't need a vitamin. I started the probiotic at the same time.

Hi A.,

I want to commend you for your question. You are smart to ask whether the store brands are best for your kids. First, I would echo what some have already said. If your kids are good eaters, and by that I mean a daily variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, also beans/nuts (if not allergic), then they are fine for now. (I am not vegan, but I do not believe that protein only comes from meat or cow milk). If your child is a picky eater, or you find your child is eating well, but is often sick, tired or irritable, then it's time to consider a change in diet and/or adding supplements.

When choosing supplements (or any foods for that matter) for your family, look for ones free of artificial colors, flavors and sweeteners. Also be wary of high fructose corn syrup.

As previously mentioned, bio-availability is another factor to consider. The US Pharmacopeia standard is that a supplement should dissolve in the system within 30 minutes. To test yours, put the vitamin in apple cider vinegar and see what happens in 30 minutes. If it dissolves, you are probably getting the nutrients listed on the label. If it doesn't, it's likely passing through your system nearly whole and you're not getting much of anything.

Like other moms here, I have a home business, and one of our products is a vitamin supplement for kids. It’s a drink you mix with water and you can keep it in a sippy cup he or she can drink throughout the day. It has a “super profood blend” with high antioxidant content formulated just for kids. I would be happy to send you a sample to try – you can contact me here or through my web site at www.naturallysara.myarbonne.com (Check out the Daily Power Punch for Kids). And good luck!

Hello A. it is care you care enough to be open to the best vitamin.
First of all the doctor studied MEDICINE (drugs to relieve symptoms of illnesses )... AFTER they are sick.
But vitamins are a whole different education.

THEY help to BUILD STRONG CELLS TO PREVENT illness and disease in the first place.

My first 3 kids were sick the first few years of their lives. We went the the route of following doctors orders for health.

The last 2 I started researching like you are. I changed gears.
I started to educate myself on prevention.

I started using great vitamins, and doing more for prevention and they are 11 & 14 and have each had to go to a doctor once.
Great vitamins are 1 of the things that BUILD STRONG bodies.
There are some other things too like going green...(TRULY GREEN.) Buy organic...if you can. And ONLY BUY CLEANING PRODUCTS THAT ARE SAFE. (NO CHILD SAFETY CAPS ARE WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT.)

I started shopping at Melaleuca 6 years ago.
I paid $29.00 for my membership 6 years ago and I can get many of the things on my grocery list from Melaleuca at a 30% to 50% discount. It is co-op prices and you get free products just about every time you shop (or every other) and if you like the products and tell friends Melaleuca sends you free products.

I LOVE MELALEUCA and THEY HAVE GREAT Vitamins for kids and adults.

They have been tested by scientists to prove that they absorb over 85% and also have over a 75% rate of holding onto Antioxidents. Antioxidents keep the cells strong healthy and help fight disease.

Light a match to your Flintstone vitamin...the last time I did it burned and black smoke came from it. That is from the petroleum that is in them.
It has also been scientifically proven that One a Day and Centurm vitamins actually CAUSE FREE RADICAL DAMAGE in your body. Free radical damage means BAD CELLULAR STRUCTURE or BAD CELLS. These cause disease, cancer etc.

Anyway if you want to shop at Melaleuca you have to be referred. GO TO www.melaleuca.com and check it out.
( I PAY THE PRICES INSIDE THE BRACKETS BECAUSE I GET SOME ITEMS AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH)
THE CLEANERS ARE ONLY $1.31 a BOTTLE FOR 28 oz.

See what you think and call me at ###-###-#### home or ###-###-#### cell.

I can refer you and you can get your own membership. They have 2. One gives you a discount and one does not. If you shop for a little something each month you get the discount and free products. Neither one is a CONTRACT just a membership where you can stop it anytime you wish. My best to you.
Let me know what you think. J.
PS THEY ALSO HAVE GREAT PROBIOTICS :)

I have been taking acidophillus (probiotics) for about 4 years now. I can tell you that it is absolutely amazing! It's been years since I've had a yeast infection, bladder infection, or constipation. You must try it! My ped. isn't very educated on the probiotic idea. So, I give my kids lots of yogurt. I hope this helps :)

I took the Flintstones as a kid too but they have so many unnatural ingredients that I've decided against them for my daughter (since our kids are already exposed to SO many more toxins from food and the environment than we were as kids). I give my daughter the L'il Critters brand - I've found them at Trader Joes, Whole Foods, and Costco (I think Target may carry them too). They have no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. They offer a multi-vitamin, an Omega 3 supplement, an Immune C, a Calcium supplement, and even some more I think.

I was told to use ones that had 400 units of vitamin D and I had a hard time finding ones that high (Flintstone's were not when I looked last). I finally edited up with the Sam's or Costco Brand children's chewable one's (can't remember for sure which place I bought last but both met the requirements).

My youngest just went for his 3 year old checkup. Since we had just moved from a home with well water to a home with city water I asked him for a different prescription (we gave them both prescription vitamins) and he said they don't need vitamins as long as they eat properly. He said vitamins are to supplement something that's lacking and since my kids eat plenty of meat, dairy and vegetables there is no need for them to continue vitamins. I thought it was odd, but it did make sense so you might want to look at that.

We definitely use probiotics everyday. They are so important and really help boost the immune system. I wouldn't use Flinstone Vitamins - basically junk in my opinion. You have to use a vitamin that has very high quality ingredients and that is actually proven to get to the cells. Otherwise it's a waste of money. I get mine through a great web resource I found - www.nourishmd.com. A pediatrician and nutrition teacher created it.

Hi A..~
check out this store, we shop here for all our consumable goods. Safer and Ameraican Made! No Chemicles. look at the Video On Oligo-Frutose Complex. it was discovered in October. it now Proves the absorbtion rate of the vitamins and minerals that are manufactured to date. including flinstones. they are now shown to be less then 10% bio-available. and turning to a sand like material in the small intestine. We too, figured if we were spending Money on Health and Wellness, including Vitamins, that we all Desperatly need, you should be absorbing it right? we thought so too. this taught us so much,. you may learn from it too. I have shopped here for 3 years now. and am all tooo happy to share that discount price with Anyone. So please feel free to ask!
Good Luck!
Blessings!

My advice is that if you trust your doctor, his comment (just fine) means more than word of mouth advice. That word of mouth advice can sometimes do more harm than good. If you don't trust your doctor, then change doctors. Flintstones vitamins have been working for kids for years. As far as the new thing you mentioned, I would not give my child anythng I didn't know about unless the doctor ok'd it.

Hi A.! I'm so proud of you to be looking for a good nutritional for your child. We can eat all the "good" food, and still not be getting what our bodies need to stay healthy. 6 years ago, a Physical Therapist told me about Usana Health Sciences. I have been taking them along with my husband and we have noticed a significant difference in our health. They also have a childrens chewable vitamin (Usanimals) that my children have been taking for the last 6 years. There are no artificail colors or flavors in them, completely bio-available (meaning they absorb into the bloodstream and go to the cells to keep them healthy), and have the recommended Vit. D levels for kids! (They just increased that level for kids recently). They are listed in the PDR (Physicians Desk Reference) so you could ask your Dr. about them. They are one of the very few nutritionals listed in there because they are manufactured with the same strict guidelines as a presciption drug is manufactured! They are also rated the top nutritional in North America for its potency and purity (check out the Comparative Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam). You can go to the website and check them out!
Hope your week is going well :)

Hi A.---First, it is important to keep in mind that the best source of vitamins, minerals, enzymes and probiotics come from whole food. When shopping for fruits and veggies, you want to put as many different colors of them in your grocery cart as possible, as the colors ARE the different antioxidants.

But having said that, we all know that kids tastes are extremely sensitive, and getting them to eat fruits and veggies, let alone a variety of them, is a challenge, at best.

I've never been good at taking vitamins regularly, knowing that food is best. But 5 years ago, I found out about a company that found a way to make a whole food supplement containing 17 different fruit, veggies and grains in a capsule, chewable or gummie form. I was thrilled because this IS food, and it has an FDA approved food label on the bottles. I've seen way too many articles on isolated supplements, such as Flintstone vitamins, that do little good and may even cause harm in the long run. I would be happy to share those articles with you, and anyone else who is interested.

If you would like to know more about the most thoroughly researched encapsulated supplement in the world, give me a call. Independent studies show that the body recognizes Juice Plus+ as food, with improvements in immune system function and DNA protection and repair. I still get excited about the fact that food can do all of this for our bodies. And, because the fruits and veggies are processed and juiced in a raw state, the probiotics and enzymes are still in the powders.

As you look at different supplements, make sure you look at the ingredients list, not just the supplement facts and percentages list. My neighbor gives her daughter Costco brand chewables and they have partially hydrogenated oils in them, TRANS FATS!!! And, many will contain artificial colorings, which, in my opinion, should be avoided.

I am currently taking a series of Wellness Classes from a Naturopath who has her PhD in nutrition. So I am happy to share what I am learning, as it is my passion, mission and great honor to help families learn how to optimize their health. Give me a call, and we can chat. I look forward to it.

Since my daughter was born she has been on Nutrilite vitamins. That is what I used as my prenatal and while I was breastfeeding I stayed on the same. it is the purest vitamin out there...and Nutrilite has been around for 50+ years. That was important to me because I know they are safe and have been tested and do what they say. My daughter just turned 3 and I can count on one hand the amount of times she has been sick. I absolutely know it is because of the vitamins. She takes a multivitamin, vitamin c, omega 3's, fruits and veggies and probiotics. I think it is just awesome that you care enough to ask such a simple question as this...because the vitamins out there claim so much and don't deliver. I buy direct and can get you set up I am sure to buy direct too. Send me a message if interested and I can tell you the cost that I pay. I'm sure I can get you the same! Good luck with your research!!! :)

Hi A.,

My 3-year-old son is a great eater, so I haven't had him taking vitamins. He'll be starting them soon though, because he drinks a lot of milk and his iron was somewhat low (according to the nurse, calcium & iron try to occupy the same space, so more than 12 ounces daily is too much). I'll get the Sam's or Costco chewables when I do. They're pretty complete. I don't think I'd put my son on probiotics unless he was having issues & his doc recommended it.

I take Probiotic Acidophilus myself. Although it's geared toward digestive support, that's not why I take it. Ever since I got pregnant with my son, I've had recurring vaginal infections (yeast, staph, & strep) and this (along with antibiotics) is the only thing that has helped me get rid of them. If you've ever taken an antibiotic and ended up with a yeast infection after, you'll totally understand why you need them! The probiotic replaces the "healthy" bacteria that the antibiotic kills off. Hope this helps! Good luck!
