I am just curious to know who gives there children vitamin and at what age did you start. My son is almost 15 months old and has become a little finicky eater lately and I am concerned that he is not getting the nutrition he needs. I am going to call my pediatrician to see what he advises but I wanted to see what you all advise. Thanks so much!!!

Haley was on flinstones and
I switched her to isa kids.

She loves them and they look like angels.

Haley is 18 months old.

What I like about them is they help
prevent tooth decay and ear aches.

Maya's doctor told me to start Maya on a multi-vitamin with iron at her 9 month appointment. I don't know if she suggests that to everyone or just to babies that fall more then one bar in the weight percentiles. At that appointment she weighed 18 pounds and was 29.5 inches long

I think it is important to supplement our diets and our kids diets, even if they are great eaters! Your child IS old enough but vitmains (we've been brain washed for years!!) are a thing of the past and there is more and more research showing the dangers of them. When you take a vitamin you get just that fragment and research is showing that if you don't have all the correct components working together in the correct ratio that nature intended your body cannot absorb it well and it can be harmful. For ex. we know that there are 10,000 phytonutrients in an apple, hundreds of carotenoids in an orange. Man cannot duplicate that. We are no longer vitamin deficient in this country. We are whole food deficient!!! You have a right to be concerned and I applaud you for that. You are not alone. There are moms all over the country tearing their hair out trying to get their children to eat their fruits and vegetables. I have a solution for you. I have given both of my kids vitamins since 4 months. My pediatrician advised me to give them a vitamin drop called polyvisol. I did this because I was breastfeading and they needed the extra iron. You can get this over the counter. It is made my enfamil. I put it in my daughters juice. For my son I give him half of flintstones vitamin. He is almost 3. I actually use the Target store brand vitamins that are almost the same as the above that mentioned, but cheaper. They make a store brand for the flintstones and polyvisol. I think for your son I might try the liquid until you're sure he would be able to chew up a chewable or gummy vitamin really well.

if they just eat a good variety of foods he should be ok. i started my son when he was 4 , also because he only ate one thing at a time, like only pancakes for 3 meals a day for a month or 2 then hot dogs, then mac and cheese etc. his pediatrician said that he should be ok that he would outgorw it well he hasnt. he is 17 now and is a walking encyclopedia of nutrition. he is a wreslter and he only eats certain foods. occassionally he will have ice cream but he wont eat cake of muffins. everything has to be fresh no preservatives except his tuna. but he is so healthy. he competitivley and eats for that 2. he can tell you how many calories you need to eat at what part of each race and how much fluid and electrolytes he need. he takes multivitamis each day and other supplements like whey protein. he has never like ptoatoes, fixed any way i tired. no mashed potatoes for this baby. but he is healthy. they just did a bio test because wreslting rules require that they have 7 % body fat to wrestle. he has 5.5% so hehad to be cleared by a doctor andhe passed all his tests, including EKG and labs. doctor says he is just super healthy. so i woulsnt worry too much about your baby not eating a lot of foods. but check with the pediatrician just to be sure. vitams can have a lot of side effects like gastrointestinal disturbances and constipation

I give my 3 & 4 yr old gummy vites. My daughter actually eats well and she is 3 but my son does not. I have been giving them since he was 2.

It is what your Dr says to do. I know my Dr is all about not giving them supplements unless days on end they refuse to eat anything nutritional. Give him Pediasure with his milk, it is full of vitamins. I do this when my kids are sick and not wanting to eat. I know just recently I started doing vitamins just on days my kids didn't eat super healthy. Most kids get what they need even if it isn't all the veggies and fruits we would prefer they eat. At 15 mos try offering him just healthy stuff, he will eat sooner or later. Put crushed cooked carrots in his mac n' cheese, sneak spinach into spaghetti sauce and so on. Just ask your Dr first. Too much of the vitamins aren't good either.

I had to start giving my son vitamins when he was an infant. The poysol is really good, but he might not like the tast. My son is 3 now and i give him 2 vitamins a day, because of how is immune systme is.

I used to give my kids each a squirt of the liquid vitamines. But I honestly think that if you feed them a variety of fruits and veggies they will get what they need. I have a college teacher once tell me to eat 2 colors of fruit and 2 colors of veggies each meal... I took my 4 kids to the market with me and let them each pick out something new from the produce section... Then the challenge was to learn how to coof/prepare it and you better bet the kids helped! Kept them all trying new things and open to new stuff even if they didnt end up liking it they tried... Cant ask for more than that!! I worry about the chewable vitamines choking hazzard... Be careful! The good diet is much safer. ANd remember to make it fun! :-)

I have given my daughter ever since she was 2. She is now 3. She loves taking them because both my husband and I take them every morning! Vitamins cannot hurt them, if anything it helps them!!

Sorry you got so many sales pitches. We started our first son on Flintstone's Firsts. He loved them. You don't have to cut them in half. They are more expensive, and I never found a generic, but the saved hassle was worth it for me. For our second, he had to start Poly-Vi-Sol with Iron at 10 months because he was failure to thrive. He's 16 months now. He does okay taking them most days. On days he doesn't want them we jsut lay him down and do it like meds in the back med pocket. I would think the ones without iron would taste better. Whatever you decide, good luck. Only you know what is best from Mommy's point of view. Don't stress about it. He'll do fine. Enjoy these days!

Hi there! I can understand where you are coming from, i.e. being concerned your son is getting adequate nutrition. My son is very picky...didn't use to be, but I've been at peace knowing that he's getting great nutrition from his vitamins. My son has taken a multi-vitamin since he was 18mo. I buy from Melaleuca and their vitamins are chewable and contain more of the vitamins and minerals without added sugar than your regular retail brands.

I started my son on a chewy vitamin at age 2. I talked to the pediatrician first before doing this. They said to look at his eating pattern over 4-5 days to see if it was balanced in that time frame. It really was pretty good, but he constantly refuses vegetables so I still decided to go with the vitamin just to cover all the bases. Most vitamins are for kids 2 and older - make sure you read the label on how much to give so your child does not overdose. Also, make sure to look for vitamins without iron. Your pediatrician can recommend whatever works best for your child.

I give my children Melaleuca's VitaBears. Whatever vitamins you choose, be sure they have a high absorption rate. You don't want to just have the nutrients going through your kids systems and flushed away. Melaleuca's vitamins have fructose compounding, a patented process, that allows for more absorption. That is what I love about them and I take their vitamins too and actually feel better and have more energy.

I also have my 10 year old on the Omega-3 and other supplements for his ADD. Boy, what a difference without the dangerous medications!

Getting children to eat a variety of vegetables can be very challenging, but Vitamins are NOT the answer. The most current research on vitamin pills is NOT showing that they are really very helpful, and they CAN BE HARMFUL.

The body needs the whole fresh food which contains all the phytonutrients in the food working together synergistically. Continue serving fresh fruits and vegetables in small, colorful portions, so your son can feed himself. Then, to bridge the gap between what he needs (7-9 servings a day for a young child) and what he will eat, give him the Juice Plus chewables.

Juice Plus has 17 fruits ,vegetables and grains that have been dehydrated and put into a chewable, capsule or gummie form. The sugar has been removed and so has most of the sodium. Children love the gummies when they get to be about 2 years old. The younger ones usually do better with the chewables. Hi S.!

I had the same issue with my son when he was around that age and I gave him Poly-vi-sol drops. They are not the most pleasant (brown in color and smell kinda bad) but we made it fun for him and he actually started to remind me that he needed his "medicine". I transitioned him to My First Flintstones when he turned 2 and he's still taking them, he'll be 4 in Feb. He loves taking his vitamin! Some people, esp pediatricians, will say that vitamins are not necessary, but we take them, why shouldn't our children? Hope this helps! Good luck!

I asked our pediatrician before giving my children vitamins and I am glad I did. My daughter was almost two, but she was only 21 lbs, so she did not weigh enough to consume the regular children's vitamins. We started giving her the infant vitamins, but she refused to take them before long. After that I just made sure she at least got three to four fruits or veggies a day, plus calcium and protein. She still drinks whole milk.
