Hi everyone,

My best friend is having a baby any day now and her and her husband can't decide which name goes with their 5 year old boy's name, Aiden. So please help me help them. They are concerned Owen is too similiar to Aidan, but also can't decide which they love more Jacob or Owen. What do you think? Aidan and Owen or Aidan and Jacob?

R.

I like Owen but I also associate it to thrown Momma from the Train (the movie with Danny Devito) where she keeps screaming OWENNNNNN lol

I like Jacob better but I like it spelled Jaycob, but is a family thing for use everyone has a Y in their name, We just had a grandson and he was Gryffin.

Good Luck they will know the correct name to call him when he is born. Who knows he might not be an Owen or Jacob after they see him but a Sam.

i don't like either with Aidan. I just had my second son with the same name and made the middle name Kai. I always liked exotic names thought. congratulations to your best friend.

I know too many little girls who are being named Owen, so I'm beginning to associate Owen as a girls name (like Whitney, Carrol, and others before that used to be boy's names). So I would vote for Jacob.

It's a little discordant to the ear because Aiden is Celtic, and Jacob is middle eastern (Yay-cob -phonetically- being an old Jewish name).

It really is an ear thing though. Just as an example, take the top 100 Irish names, and nearly every one "flows" better to the ear with the Gaelic name Aiden:

For some reason I think "Aidan and Owen" is hard to say....for example if someone asked them their kids' names. Aidan and Jacob is easier to say.

Maybe I'm imagining it though. :)

They both sound good but Aidan and Jacob for me would have to be said in reverse order. Jacob and Aidan flow better in that order. Not sure if that makes sense LOL.

At the end of the day I don't really think it matters how they "flow" you pick what ya like. I actually never gave any thought to how my two kids names would flow together. I just made sure they sounded good with our last name.

I just re-read the post and Owen stands out more to me. I like it better. They can always make one the middle name too. If they do that I think Jacob Owen sounds better.

Congrats to your friends!

My vote goes with a different twist. I would go with something that is a little less "flow off the tongue". such as Aiden and Michael or Aiden and Bishop.

I personally can't stand Owen. I have never seen the appeal with that name...lol. I can't help but think of Owen brand sausage (maybe that's a southern thing). In this case, Owen being a name they like, I would chose Jacob, simply because it sounds better. The "en" in Owen and "an" in Aidan sound to similar. So, I think the better choice is Jacob. :)

Since you did not request any new names, only our opinion of your choices listed, I would say name him Aidan Jacob.
Aidan Owen has too many vowels sounds and you'd probably shout out
"Odan Ayen" by mistake. LOL.
Best of luck with your new bundle of joy!

I agree that both are discordant with Aidan. How about Quinn?
