I have been considering Mirena, the IUD that is supposed to prevent pregnancy for 3-5 years, and I was wondering if anyone has used this method of birth control and how it worked? Was it painful to get put in? and what do they actually do at the dr apt? I've read up on the side effects and I was just wondering about anyones experiences and tips or advice I could use before I get this.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

okay, so I ended up having the Mirena put in a few days ago and I'm SO RELIEVED I DID!! The side efflects were few and far between and nothing like i thought. Mild Discomfort with mild cramping but nothig too bad! Light spotting for 1 1/2 days and back to normal!! Dont have to worry about birth control for 5 years unless I want it taken out sooner! I dont feel anything and whats good is my period will be lighter and almost gone (few days)!! Go back in 6wks after my next cycle to see if its all good! -- any questions?? feel free to ask while its fresh in my memory! I would totally recomend it to anyone!

There are other posts on this same topic so search those as well. I had it put in 1 year ago. It was slightly uncomfortable. I would take a pain reliver before hand but it was brief. I have had no mood swings, no PMS, and my cycles have been short and very, very light. Sometimes I basically spot. So I LOVE it. But it is not for everyone.
Good luck.

I had the Mirena put in after I had my last child. I had it in for 3 years and LOVED it! I had no side effects and no periods. I had it taken out because we changed out minds and wanted to have one more baby and now I'm pregnant with my third. It did hurt a little getting it put in but not too much and it didn't take long (maybe 5 minutes from start to finish) and then you don't have to do anything else for 5 years!

I am on my second and I am very happy with mine. first insertion did not hurt , second did hurt , like a bad cramp then it was over. It was done at my Drs office, it was an in and out appointment no longer really than an appointment for a pap. I had no problems the rest of the day, bleed for a few days.
It's best to get it put in when you are on your period if you haven't just had a baby. I don't know if you've had kids but most Drs won't put them in women that haven't had a baby already.

I've had mine for over 3 years and am pleased. It was no more uncomfortable than my regular annual exam. The nurse inserting it ahd me nurse my son while it was being done to help with any discomfort. Seems like it worked. After a week or two, you go back to have it checked which was no biggie.

My experience with the insertion was very painful. They don't tell you that before hand. Also, my husband could feel it a bit during sex. Also, it seems I have gained 10 pounds this year with no other changes in eating/exercising. Also, my breasts have gotten a whole size bigger and although a 1 1/2 later my periods are lighter. They last longer and the PMS is terribel with breast tenderness, etc. Others do not seem to have the same effects.

I am 34 & I had Mirena put in at my 6 week post-partum checkup after child #2 & have had it got a little over 3 months now. I LOVE it!

Inserting it was similar to a Pap, pretty quick & simple & the doctor should show you the device before inserting it. Mine did anyway. The discomfort of inserting it for me was moderate, there was cramping, but it didn't last any longer than it took my doctor to place the device, so maybe 15 seconds. Worth it to me for birth control I don't have to think about.

I had mild spotting the first few weeks & very mild cramps off & on, WAY less than a regular period. This stopped a few weeks in though & I have not had any spotting or cramping since. Nor have I had a period since.

I also like that it's very low dose of hormones, so it's recommended for nursing moms. Luckily my insurance covered it, so I just had to pay the $25 co-pay, otherwise it is about $900, but well worth it. Cheaper than the pill in the long run.

I just asked about this last weekend! I went back on Monday for my 6 week post baby check up and thought about having it done. After reading the responses I got, it was more positive than negative, but the negatives were particularly bad. I knew what I was getting into with the pill, so I stuck with that. If my insurance would have covered the entire cost (I still would have had to pay $300) I would have given it a try (fun side note: the pill is only costing me $6.50 a month, so the cost savings I thought I'd get with the mirena, over time, is actually savings with the pill).
While I heard people's horror stories, upon talking to my doctor she's only removed 3 of all that she's put in. 2 were because the patients didn't like the constant spotting right after getting it put in, the other had problems with pressure, which my doctor was not convinced was from the iud, but she was.
So that's my story. If my insurance would have covered the whole cost I absolutely would have tried it, but I didn't want to chance it in case I would have needed to take it out.
Good luck with your choice!!

Don't get it! I had it and it was terrible. The actual insertion wasn't bad, but the non-stop period I had wasn't worth it. Not to mention I would crave sugar to the point that I couldn't 'fix' the craving. I had terrible cramps all the time that had me doubled over on the couch even after 800 mg of ibuprohen. After 4 months of having it in I didn't care that the doctor said it should get better. I suffered from cysts on my ovaries every month after that when I would ovulate. I very firmly believe that it was because of the mirena. I would sooner risk being pregnant earlier than planned than becoming infertile. I have heard many other horror stories that are worse than mine. I've heard women say that it was attatched to the uterine wall so badly they have to have it surgically removed. I had a friend that had to have it removed because she was constantly in pain. All I can say is I hope that if you chose the IUD that you have better luck with it than all the people I've known that have had it.

I'm amazed. It seems like people either love it or hate it. I'm between the ones that loved it. Had it put in twice already. First time I had it for five years, even before I had a baby and I got pregnant 3 months after removing it. The second time had it put in after my son was born and had it for year and a half and removed it to try for another baby. Loved it both times. It didn't really hurt at all to put it in or out. The best part - no periods at all. I guess you can give it a try and see if you are the lucky one who loves it too.

I had it put in at my six week post check up and it didn't hurt at all. It is so tiny. They basicly do what they do at your pap test except take a little tube like thing that has the iud in it and insert it. I had basicly had my period after I got it but have not had one since only ocasional spotting and it has been over a year now. You just have to remember to check if it is still there once in a while (can feel the fishing line like strings). I love not having to remember to take the pill everyday and that I am still protected.

i have it and i like it for the most part!

it was not painful to put in, just a little more pressure than a regular pap exam.

its working GREAT! best part, i actually trust it (unlike the pill) and my husband likes that he doesnt have to wear condoms. its anytime, anywhere sex. its awesome.

they do need to take into consideration your medical history. so make sure to have the talk with your doctor before you get it. you might have to make an appointment, then think about it, and make another to have it placed.

basically, its just like a pap; they put it in with a long stick i think LOL i dont remember, but it wasnt horrible. back in the 80s when my mom had one (it was the copper one i think) she threw up the minute they placed it, so they removed it. i had NO symptoms of anything when they placed it.

at first, i was spotting a lot. it wasnt enough to soak through my pants or anything, but it was annoying for a while. 3 months i want to say it was like spotting all the time, a couple days off in between... but it was immediate that "periods" were lighter, less painful, and shorter. keep light pads on you for a while though until your body adjusts and quits spotting.

then after that the only thing i have had is some cysts, which are common and normal and not harmful. however, i have had a few times where the pain was like excruciating, like i had the worst gas cramps of my life. one day it "put me out" where i was literally lying on the floor in pain. lasted a couple hours, then everything was fine. i guess the cysts can burst, though i havent talked to my doctor about them, i did get checked out with an ultrasound and it was just a cyst. i was worried it was eptopic pregnancy or something - which can happen with the IUD. but its rare.

anyway, as long as you can keep in tune with your body, keep in touch with your doctor when you have problems, i have no worries. i havent had a period in forever. and its so nice. i definatly recommend them.

OH! one thing; you are supposed to check monthly for the little string. reach up in there and make sure its still around. they did cut mine pretty short, and my husband complained for a while that it would stab him. poor guy! but eventually, it got 'sucked' up into the uterus, and my doc said he would just check it with an ultrasound every time we had a pap done because he could then make sure that it was still in there (like i wouldnt notice it coming out? LOL)

but anyway, yeah. write me with any ?s.

I just had Mirena inserted this February & for me, it HURT. My doctor said she passed out when she had one inserted for herself b/c her doctor said it wouldn't hurt & when she started feeling pain, she held her breath but for so long she passed out. I think it's an individual thing, but I was in pain for about 5 days then it got better & now I'm fine.

My only complaint is that I now have acne. It's a side effect only about 10% of people get, but mine is gross. It's on my neck, around my ears and fore head. It's kind of a pain b/c I'm in my 30s & never had skin problems, even when I was a teen! I've heard this is from the hormones & that nothing you try will help. I'm going to see a dermatologist to see if this is in fact the case. If it weren't for the acne, I'd have to say I love it (after the insertion). I had spotting for about 2 months but really only around the time of my period. Now, my period lasts for about 2 days & that's it! Contact your insurance company too b/c some pay for the insertion fee or the cost of the product. Mine paid for about $300 worth but you have to call ahead of time.

I got the Mirena after my 3rd child at my 6 week check up. I HATED IT! I had it removed about 3 months later. I didnt look up the side effects until after I had it and I wish I would have know about them before I got it. I had EVERY side effect and it was aweful. First off it was the most horrible pain when they put it in. I remember the doctor saying something about measuring my uterus and it was the worst pinching feel I have ever experianced. I had all 3 kids with no drugs and I must say that even that pain didnt measure to what this was like. The worst side effect I had was the HOT FLASHES!. I am only 30 yrs old so I knew I shouldnt be having the hot flashes as bad as I was. I would start sweating just sitting and watching tv. I couldnt get comfortable. Then I also had the neseau 24/7 and my tummy was bloated. About 2 days after I had it removed I was back to my normal self. They put me on a low dose pill and I havent had any problems with that. The Mirena was one of my worst decisions I made.

This question was asked on this website just a couple of days ago so you might be able to look up those answers too. I've had mine about three years and have been happy with it. It hurt a lot more than I expected to have it inserted, but I have IBS so that may have intensified the pain. I had quite a bit of spotting the first month, but I don't really have periods anymore, except occassional (every few months) light periods or spotting. The hormones in it don't bother me even though I can't tolerate the hormone levels in the pill or patch. Just to clear up something that was said on the previous post from a couple of days ago--it is true that doctors generally require you to have had at least one pregnancy before they insert an IUD, but it's not because of concerns for future fertility issues, but rather has to do with the size, shape and ability of your uterus to accept the device. It is inserted at your doctor's office in just a matter of minutes. Some people recommend taking Tylenol or Advil in advance, and I will do that when it's time to have mine removed.

I just wanted to throw this out there - just in case.
If you have HPV you should reconsider. IUDs in patients with HPV are illegal in Europe because of several health risks.
They are allowed in the US... who knows why. Probably for the money, and because our gov't doesn't regulate healthcare as much as many European governments do.

Just sayin'.

Its why I haven't gotten one. If I could, I totally would!
