I am having a Mirena IUD inserted Monday and wanted to hear how the procedure was for any of you who have had one. I am a little nervous about the pain with insertion. I have had one child and heard that that helps make it easier. Hoping to get some reassurance from those of you who have experienced this. Thank you in advanced for your help.

So What Happened?

Thank you to all of you who responded to my request. I had the IUD inserted today and it wemt great! My doctor gave me something to insert one hour before the procedure to dilate and soften the cervix and had me take 1 mg of Xanax. I only felt pain for a few seconds and it was tolerable. I did have mild cramping right after the procedure, but after taking a 3 hour nap at home, I woke up and have had no more pain or cramping. I am really glad I did it! Thanks again to all of you who responded, it helped to have the reasurance.

Hello,

I have had the Mirena IUD going on a year. It has really slowed my menstral period and this month I have yet to get it. I did call and they did mentin that if it could actually stop my period. I will say that the cramps you get could be a little worse than that of a normal menstrual cramp but so far things have been good. Its a little late 2 tell you how the procedure goes since its Monday lol but theres a little insight for you.

A little about me:

Minor cramping upon inserting of the IUD...like a menstral cramp. Slight cramping for the first few hours and after that nothing.

I had irregular periods for a while...every time I had sex I would start bleeding. Quite frustrating!!!

But now as of a month ago...NO CYCLES!!!!

Well worth it.

Only draw back for us...my husband does feel the wires poking him in certain positions. Doesnt bother him enough for me to remove it.

Insertion was not a big deal. I do not remember any pain. As I recall it was the removal that was more uncomfortable, a bit of spotting, etc.

I had one inserted when my son was 6 weeks old. It didn't hurt, but was slightly uncomfortable, kinda like mild menstral cramps. It was over quickly. I had very light spotting for about 5 weeks after, then no period at all until 2 months after I had it removed. I had it removed in Nov., and I couldn't even feel it when the dr. took it out. I loved it! I will get it again after our next baby.

My Mirena experience has been positive, too. Little discomfort during insertion and cramping through the afternoon. I've had very light to no periods since! Love it! I also experienced the hormonal mood swings for about 4 months after first getting the iud, my husband was almost on the verge of driving me to the ob to have it removed, but I magically evened out and I hardly even notice a difference in my hormones around what would/should be my monthly cycle. Just plan to take advil/motrin the day after you have it inserted and warn your hubby to be patient with you, it's worth it!

I do not have one, but have been looking at getting one. I am on the Depo right now (shot every 3 months). I love it, but have been on it for a every long time. It has the side effect of weight gain, but a positive is that you do not have your period, like the Mirena. They had talked to me about switching to the Mirena at my OBGYN's office. The big advantage for me would be cost. Let me know how it goes for you.

Easy breezy. A little cramping like everyone else mentioned afterwards.

I did get a very small ovarian cyst from it, but no complications from that.

Loved loved loved not having a period or really any PMS symptoms--migraines, moodiness, etc--while I had it, too!

I will definitely get it again after I'm done being pregnant!

Having it put in was a piece of cake - but I did it at my 6 week visit. What happened starting about a week afterward was 9 months of hell on earth. I cramped almost all of the time, I bled almost every day, sex hurt so badly that we only did it twice because I was in tears both times, I got moody and depressed (chronic pain can do that to you)... I Called my OBGYN's office repeatedly to schedule an appointment because I was having problems with my IUD and the staff never even put me through to the doctor - just kept saying that "Mirena doesn't cause that".. well wild and crazy fact, now I know I'm not the only one that Mirena did it to.

I finally had another doctor remove it (before I started digging for strings myself) and I had some pus and blood, a sharp sting, and a foul odor when it came out. Apparently an infection had finally started to set in. Three weeks of antibiotics later, I was starting to feel fine, and my husband and I were back to having sex by our son's first birthday. The only lingering effects that I have (which may or may not be related to the Mirena) is an auto immune disorder. Mirena triggers an inflammatory response to prevent pregnancy - for some people, the inflammatory response goes in overdrive.

I had a sharp "cramp" it disipated quickly, I was lightly crampy for a few hours, the ease of mind it gives is worth it though!

P.-

I had the Mirena IUD after I had my second daughter. I was nervous about it too!! However, when they inserted it, I felt a small pinch and it was over. It was the best thing. You may bleed or spot for the first month or two and then I never had another cycle or spotting. I really enjoyed it. I didn't gain weight with it or had mood swings. I had it removed a year ago because my husband and I were trying to have another baby. I felt nothing when they removed it and within two weeks my cycle started normally. We have had trouble conceiving, but I don't know if it has anything to do with the IUD or not. Just FYI though. I think you will enjoy it, especially since you don't have to worry about anything for five years. Good luck to you and no worries. You will like it.

I had mine placed in July after the birth of my 2nd child. I didn't feel anythng, although I think most people feel a little pinch. My doctor had me cough when she was about to do the insertion and I think that is supposed to help. I had minimal discomfort afterwards. All in all it has been great and I'm really glad I got it done. I had bleeding/spotting for a while, but I don't have that anymore. I have also seen a decrease in my period (length, amount, severity).

I am on my second Mirena. It's been 5 1/2 years with no period - YEAH! There is little to no discomfort when it is inserted. There will be cramping for a short while after it is inserted but that is normal. I had spotting for about 6 months with my first one but nothing like a period then no periods at all. I have had no side effects at all. Make sure the gyn you go to is familiar with the Mirena so you don't have the experience as mentioned by others with problems of inserting the device. Not all BC methods work for everyone, that's why we have choices. Good luck!!!

I had the Mirena inserted in Sept 2007 after the birth of my baby and the procedure wasn't bad at all, but I had to have it removed 3 or 4 months later because I had really bad side effects. I gained about 15 pounds and was extremely moody and before I got it removed I felt pregnant (bloated, sick, and everything). It had me totally going crazy. OHopefully, you'll have the experience some of the ladies on here had, but it was horrible for me and I will never get it again. I guess it's different for different people, but just remember don't ignore your body. It took me over a month to even acknowledge what was happening to me and to associate it with the Mirena. I started losing weight and got back to myself after two weeks of having it removed.

A friend of mine had one about a year ago. When she was having it inserted she experienced extreme pain. The nurse acted like she just ahd a low pain tollerance and was being a baby. (She has had 4 compeltely natural births with no pain meds) She went home with continued pain. Long story short the doctor ahd actually punched it right through her uterine wall and it was floating around in her abdomen. They had to do exploratory surgery to fish it out and repair her punctured uterus.

I had the experience that Melanie H had, only I did feel a lot discomfort and pain. My doctor tried twice to get the iud inserted and she was not able to get it in the right spot. I just gave up on the whole thing and decided to go the the pill route. I was dissapointed though-I have heard so many great things about the iud! Good luck!

My OB/GYN told me to take Advil before the procedure that way it will cut down on how much pain I felt. It worked, because it was more cramps then actual pain. I told my sister in law who is contemplating the Mirena too that it is a little worse than a pap smear but a lot less than contractions. Just stay relaxed, breath, and I suggest medication beforehand. My OB/GYN told me what I should and should not be feeling the whole time. Make sure you use all of the time they allow for you to rest afterwards - I was a little lightheaded.

There was slight discomfort when my OBGYN inserted it. About 20 minutes later I started having cramping, which is normal. Cramping lasted about 3 hours off and on but nothing major just like pms cramping! The best part was I didn't have a period for 3 months after the insertion which I believe is also normal. Ater a day I could no longer feel it. love love love it!! You can try taking a pain killer about 30 minutes before you go in if you do not want tohandle the pain. Good luck!

Hi P., I had the Mirena a few years ago. The insertion process was not too uncomfortable at all. Really it wasn't as bad as some of the exams that I have had. I felt a little pinch, then it was over. It is not uncommon to have some spotting in the days just after insertion. I had that as well, but it isn't like a period. Some people experience a lighter period with it, mine was shorter, not necessarily lighter. It was a good option for our family. A note, though, there is (was) some anecdotal evidence that women with some depression issues could problems with the Mirena because of the extra hormones that it carries. I had to discontinue use because I suspected this.

Best of luck to you,
C.

Really, it was nothing worse for me than a regular check up, with a pap smear etc. Now, I had just had a baby 6 weeks before, and she said that might make a difference, but it also meant I bled for a bit longer than usual. When I say bled, I dont mean like major bleeding, but they have to get the area where it was inserted to stop bleeding before you are done..I think that was actually the worst part for me. Not painful per se, just uncomfortable!! But, really, it is not a big deal from my own experience and that of many others. I also had to have my taken out, which was easy too. I did not react well to it, and got crazy moody/mean until it came out 3 months later. Not everyone will experience that, really, most dont, but I was CRAZY!! I just cant do anything with hormones I guess!! Good luck, you will be totally fine! ~A.~
