Attn: Piano Teachers and Mommies of Piano Playing Kiddos!

I'm a piano teacher and I charge $20 for 30 minute lessons. My greatest demand time is 5-7pm which I do two days a week. Lots of parents can't get their kids to you until then, it seems. When I started teaching I researched the midcities area and found everything from $12-35 for a half hour lesson. Have you heard of www.GetLessonsNow.com? I've gotten most of my students from there. I have all I need now and keep getting requests. It's a $50 annual subscription and I think it's worth it.

My daughter's piano teacher, who taught out of her home, charged $15 for 1/2 hour. She had a Masters in music and taught piano, French Horn and/or voice. She would buy the books my daughter needed and we would reimburse her for them. That way she was sure we always got the right book rather than having us try to find the books she needed. As far as timing went, this teacher was very flexible. She worked a "regular" daytime job and would do her private music lessons in the evening after dinner, or on weekends, for extra money.

My daughter is in chamber orchestra ( violin) at her middle school now and heading to 9th grade next year. We have had private violin lessons at school during her class time for about $17/ almost 1/2hr. In summer and other times I pay about $20/ 1/2hr. Our violin instructor had a baby and now I am looking for a new one.

Also, middle school and up have competitions in late Jan and each orch student needs a pianist. So, there might be opportunity fir you to do that as well. The practice times are at the school fir about $15 or so and the the performance for $20 or so. Our scho has 1 pianist that works with these kids unless you happen to know someone and the director approves.

The reason I responded, the school venue might be another alternative for you. We always need talented teachers!!

Hey--good luck getting this started!! I took piano from age 5 to 18. I will say that by the time my weekly 30 minute lesson was over, I was READY for it to be over. I think kids just get tired and restless if you go a whole hour. That being said, I remember taking the check once a month to my teacher for $35.00, So basically it was 4 30-min. lessons for 35.00. I am 31 yrs old now so I think $50 a month is fair if you do 30-min. lessons, and if you or the parent want to do 1 hr lessons, then maybe $75 or $80 per month is reasonable. (books should maybe cost extra) Hope you enjoy teaching piano!! --C.
