My daughter has been in violin for years.

We pay $30 for 1/2 hr. Basically, $1 a minute. She had a couple of session with someone who plays in the local symphony and she was $1 per minute as well.

Most lessons are completed within 1/2 hr to 45 minutes.

When I was teaching privately (almost 10 years ago - yikes!) I was charging $18 / 30 min, $36 / hr.

I was paying $20/ 30 min when I was in HS.

Rates can vary widely depending on the SES of the area in which you live.

We pay $30 for half-hour piano lessons in our home, and will pay $30 for half-hour violin lessons over the summer. Around here the general rule of thumb is about a dollar a minute for private lessons of any kind. But some of course are more or less. Not often less, though.

If lessons are extremely cheap, I'd really look into the teacher's background and experience and question whether either the teacher just didn't know how to value his or her own time, or the teacher just doesn't have much experience. Going super-cheap is not always going to get you quality.

LOL. The going rate (for a very good teacher) in Alexandria, VA for a HALF hour is $38.00. ...and he has a slight discount if you wanna take hour lessons- $75.

My husband is an awesome teacher. Highly recommended and he gets practically all his students by word of mouth. He has kept some students over five years (he teaches beginner to advanced/expert level).

The rate for an "average" teacher otherwise in Alexandria is about $25-$32 for half hour.

He works full time with private lessons (he's the only person he knows that teaches AND does not have a second income). He's the sole breadwinner for our family of six. I'm very proud of him- he's just an awesome teacher and musician:)

But, yeah- he's expensive...

We live in a very cheap town near a fancier university town. My daughter takes weekly piano lessons in our town for $13/half hour (steal!) and weekly violin lessons in fancier town for $20/half hour. Both teachers are accomplished older ladies and professional musicians who have taught for many years. We're very lucky to have access to those prices.

We pay $18 for a 30 minute piano lesson. The teacher comes to our house. If we were to have the lessons at her house, it would be $15 for 30 minutes.

Wow, I can't believe what great deals there are out there! I am a private piano teacher in San Diego. I charge $40 per half hour if I'm coming to you and $32.50 per half hour if you come to me.

The lowest teacher around here charges $22 per half hour.

My rate includes all lesson books, recital hall fees, etc.

We don't currently.

General Music (best ever class!!! Theory, use of all indtrument families and about 60 instruments total) was about 125 a month.

Cheap piano lessons are about the same (most are twice that)

Again. Just in our area.

All are 1hr per week.

((teeheehee... People things snowboarding is expensive, but THAT is only 50 a month for TWO people. Sorry. It just cracks me up that my neighbor used to gripe about how we must be made out of money to do snowboarding, aikido, dance, drama, and swimming... When our combined monthly total was less than her sons piano lessons. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do piano. but it would mean quitting everything else.)

We have a local Christian University that has lots of students that will give lessons either at the college or at your home for around $10 per hour. If you're just starting out with music lessons, this is probably sufficient since the material is pretty basic. As they gets better, you could look at a more experienced teacher.

I can ask my neighbor. She teaches private music lessons in her home (both piano and violin), so she'd have a good idea at what the going rate would be in the Chicago area.

In school I paid only $5 but out of school I paid $35 for 30-45 mins. Some teachers go for an hour lesson so it depends on the teacher on how long their lessons are. I wouldn't pay more than $40 & they'd better be great at teaching. I wouldn't pay more than $35-$40 at the very most & I'd check out references & ask if they give a complimentary introductory lesson to see if it's going to click between teacher & student. Some teachers just didn't work well w/my learning difficulties but then I'd get an awesome teacher & blossomed so be sure to ask about any needs you may have, complimentary or discounted first lesson & check references or if they have info online, see if they have any reviews. Also, I ended up w/teachers that forced me to purchase really expensive books for my lessons & only used like 1 or 2 songs out of it. IMO the teacher could've & should've just copied the tunes out of 'her' book so that was an extra expense so you should ask about that. If this is for your child for like band or orchestra, usually for band, the lessons cover what is being played for class & competitions & the music for that is normally provided, at least for us it was, but if it's for lessons that you just want to take to become a musician, some teachers make you buy music & that can be expensive so that's something else to check w/the teacher. Good luck!
