I would like to meet up with some other mom's of children with Special Needs. I don't know any now and I think it would be nice to have someone I can relate to. I have a 2 year old little boy with Down's Syndome.

I have friends with special needs children and I know through them that Northwood Church on Rufe Snow and N. Tarrant has a thing they call Revive. It is for parents with special needs children and they have one night a month where they watch your children and give you time to go out with your spouse, or just have some time off. I'm sure you can contact the church for more info. I also know they have nurses on staff that night as well as other care givers.

I live in N. Hurst and have a 16 month old boy with Down Syndrome. We have a great support group through the Down Syndrome Partnership of Tarrant County (DSPTC). If you want to be added to our yahoo group or any of the mailing, please let me know and I will get you in contact with the appropriate people. It has been so helpful for me and they often have free seminars for parents on a variety of subjects. Feel free to email me directly for details - ____@____.com this helps!

You might check with the local school district for information about a mom's group for special needs children. Just call the special education department. And while you're at it, you can ask about services for which your child may be eligible, starting at age 3.

I live in the Bedford area and work from home as well. I have two beautiful little girls. My 5 year old has Cornelia de Lange Syndrome, which is rare. Anyway, we are starting a support group at my church for families who have children with special needs. It might be something you and your family would be interested in attending. I am trying to set up our first meeting, which will be in May. Feel free to call me ###-###-####.

I have a 6 year old with CHARGE Syndrome. IT is pretty rare, but I have a friend with a child with Down Syndrome who is very involved with other families with Down Syndrome. Let me know if you are interested in talking with her and i can privately send you her email address. We too have a group at our church that meets once a month. These are all parents of children with special needs and we have a buddy system at our church so that your child will be accompanied by a volunteer during sunday school so you can attend big church. Let me know if you want more info about this.

While my twin boys do not have any special needs, I can imagine how much it would help you to find other moms to share your feelings and thoughts with that will relate to you.

I had the good fortune, however, to visit a place yesterday that you may not know about. It's called Rocky Top Ranch and is located at 660 Keller Smithfield Road in Keller. It is essentially a big animal ranch that works with special needs kids. It's all non-profit and survives on volunteer support and funding. Anyway, you can probably meet lots of other kids like your Matthew and their moms there and find a few women to bond with.

Here's a link to their site: www.rockytoptherapy.org

All the best,

Our church has a huge special needs program and provides free childcare 2 Fridays a month so parents can have a date night out. It might be a great way to meet some parents with similar needs. Here's the link to the special needs section of the website if you want to check it out or call and get some more info. Its right on the corner of North Tarrant and Rufe Snow in Keller. http://www.northwoodchurch.org/v2/kids/specialneeds.htm

Hi, K..

I'm the 'mommy' of a 15 year-old girl who has several special needs labels, but none of them is Down Syndrome. However, I know of a couple of terrific groups in our area where you can get in touch with other moms. You can also get information about programs, activities, schools, and more from these groups. One is the Arc of Greater Tarrant County ###-###-#### and the other is the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas, http://www.downsyndromedallas.org/.

There is nothing like the companionship of someone who has "been there," so I hope this helps you connect with moms who share some of your concerns. My advice, as a mom who has been through some, but not all, of this journey, is to not forget the OTHER moms you encounter. It's great for us to address our kids' special needs, but she really is more LIKE other kids than she is DIFFERENT from them. It's been really important that I remember to treat her like "other kids," and keeping in touch with moms of all kinds of girls helps me do that!

Have a great week!
Geri

This may not help you out right at this moment but my aunt works for Challenge Air for Kids. Not sure if you have ever heard of it but it is a very fun time fo ryou and your children. It would also be a great opportunity to meet to parents that have kids with special needs. You can check it out at this website or just type in Challenge Air for Kids and it will say something about a non profit organization. I hope this helps. IF you have any questions about it please feel free to email me. Good luck!
