Any "Natural" Product Recommendations for Gasey/fussy Newborn That Spits Up?

Proud new mama to a 2 week old little boy! He is breastfed and seems to be having trouble digesting his milk. He projectile vomits at least once a day and is fussy/colicky after feeding. I am not getting any sleep and I have a 20 mo little angel that needs me during the day!! Can anyone recommend a natural product that can give him relief. The pediatrician is not very concerned unless he is vomiting after every feeding and does not want to give him any rx for reflux (neither do I). Thanks for any advice in advance!

Oh, Darlin, been there and done that! There is a wonderful cholic remedy that I found at Mother's Market - it's a homeopathic liquid I think it's by Hyland. The other thing that really worked was to use a rectile thermometor. I know this sounds weird, but I got this from my pediatrician when my babe was an infant. Apparently, infant anuses are not fully developed and sometimes they "lock shut" and gass can't release. Use some lubricant on the tip of the thermometer and then insert it just inside the sphincter and gently open the anus a fraction. This will cause the gas to release and the baby to be relieved! I know it sounds weird, but it works wonders! Sorry about my poor spelling! L.

My son was that way, I remember I thought that only happened to formula-feed babies. He just over ate- all the time! And I breastfed him for over 1 year. As long as they are still gaining weight the doctor usually says there is nothing to worry about.

Also you may want to try fennel or peppermint essential oil? I would use only Young Living's therapeutic grade oils on my babies because their products are chemical-free and money back guaranteed. You rub 1 drop in your hand and put it on their tummy. Also there is a book called GENTLE BABIES: Essential Oils and Natural Remedies for Pregnancy, Childbirth and Infant Care by Debra Raybern. Highly recommended.

If you'd like to try the oils, check out my website and let me know if you have any questions about how to use them. http://scent2heal.younglivingworld.com

Have you tried burping really good in the middle of a feeding? I have a 4 week old boy who screams and cries terribly from gas pain unless I burp him really really good. He is even getting to understand that right after the "gulping" part of the feeding - first few mins or so we stop and burp. We have much less problems now. My daughter never had these gas problems. There are also ways to relieve gas by laying them on you arm w your hand on their belly and patting the back. That helped us too.
Hope it helps! Good luck.

Like another response you've already gotten, when I eliminated dairy products from my own diet my daughter had a much easier time digesting my breast milk. What you describe sounds exactly like her so it might be worth a try! After I stopped breastfeeding we put her on soy formula and then soy milk. She is not allergic to dairy, just lactose intolerant. Good luck and congrats on your new baby!

Hi J., I had the same thing happen with my two sons (very fussy after eating, projectile vomiting, 'reflux', and eventually blood in the stools), who ended up being allergic to both dairy and soy (85% of all babies who are allergic to dairy are also allergic to soy).

I would eliminate dairy from your diet, and allow up to 1-2 weeks for it to clear your system. Gluten is also a big culprit. Keeping a food diary can be a good idea and can help you pinpoint what might be making your baby upset. It takes 6-8 hours for what you eat to affect your baby, so keep that in mind. If you are experiencing a lot of stress, that can also affect the baby that way.

Happi Tummi (you can google it) is also a great new product on the market. It is a tummy 'wrap' with herbs and essential oils in it that you heat up and put on baby's tummy. I've heard amazing stories about it! Gripe water and colic tablets didn't work for us, but I've also heard good things about those. Best to figure out what is causing the fussiness first, though, before trying to 'cover up' the symptoms.

Good luck! Hope this helps.

My daughter was extremely fussy as a newborn. She acted colic, but only after eating. We determined that she was allergic to the protein in cows milk. Once I eliminated all cows milk (milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.) from my diet (as I was breastfeeding), she was a new baby! She outgrew the allergy by the time she was 1 year old.

My son was fussy too, and had reflux. He was treated with medication, which I hated doing. It seemed only to help a little. I now wonder if he, too, wasn't allergic to the cow proteins. We'll never know.

But, as far as your son is concerned, it might be worth trying to eliminate cow's milk from his diet and see if the fussiness and vomiting ceases. It seems to be a common issue. Good luck!

There is "Hyland's Colic tablets", which is not just for "colic" but "Product Description:
A homeopathic combination for the temporary relief of symptoms of colic and gas pains caused by irritating food, feeding too quickly, swallowing air and similar conditions during teething, colds and other minor upset periods in children. 100% natural, no side effects."

Its all natural, as is all Hyland's products.
You can go to www.amazon.com to read about it and see the reviews.

ALSO, make sure you BURP your baby during/after each feeding. Your let down may be strong, and he is having trouble moderating his swallowing. He is only 2 weeks old.

ALSO, watch what you are eating... as it can affect him too and/or make him gassy.

All the best,
Susan

Sounds like you need to look at your diet and determine if something you are eating is causing this to happen in your little one.

hi. not to scare you, but if he is truly projectile vomiting, that can be an indicator of pyloric stenosis, which is a progressive narrowing of the esophagus at the top of the stomach. this will eventually close off and your son will not be able to eat. you need to take him to his pediatrician immediately and describe for them what is happening and how often. it is a surgically treated condition, and there is no other option. if he is just vomiting without force, i wouldn't be concerned. but if he's really projectile vomiting, like a foot in front of him, please take him in and get him checked out. if he's just spitting up, don't feed him as much at each feeding. babies gorge themselves and it sounds like he's eating too much and then vomiting it back up. also, don't lie him flat after feeding him. keep holding him or prop him up for at least half an hour. that will help his stomach contents not to leak back up.
by the way, if you feel that the vomiting isn't improving and you pediatrician still isn't concerned, get a second opinion.

Hi J.,

My oldest daughter was similar, now she's 22 months. I tried different alternatives but I started putting chamomile and mixed it with her formula. It really helped her so much. With my 2nd daughter, now 9 months I just did it. Chamomile seemed to help them pass gas better and help out with the colick. It will take a few tries to see that it will help out.

I used Babys Bliss Gripe Water and it seemed to work well. But first. Have you tried eliminating the common irritants from your diet one by one? I know the most common are coffee and dairy products. I know there are more and you can find more info on the what to expect the first year website. Best of luck and congrats!

we had problems with our newborn being really gassy and fussy at times and I was breast feeding exclusively for the first 6 months. we basically just figured out what foods I was eating that was making it worse and made sure to burp her in between sides and at every feeding.
there were a few foods that were easy to figure out, others a little more difficult so we just eliminates ones for a few days to see if they had an impact.
I did notice a strong reaction to soda; had two sodas the first few months on separate occasions and she was incredibly fussy that night so I just stopped those entirely.
good luck to you!

Dear J., I can understand your concern for your newborn baby and not wanting to give any prescription medicine to him. You sound like a really great mommy. I have a few questions for you: Is you baby gaining weight? Are you able to burp your baby after every feeding? Do you feed your baby on one or two sides per feeding? What you are saying is probably very normal (but very tiring). I would love to help you resolve this situation naturally - it IS possible! I am a registered dietitian and lactation consultant and I provide lactation consultations in the privacy of your own home via SKYPE. Please visit my website to make an appointment.

Take care, J., and I can easily help you through this.

Sounds like he might need to burp more. He might need longer between feeding. Like halfway through, make sure a good burp comes out. Sometimes that is the reason for the vomiting. Also, the only product out there for gas that I know would be mylicon drops, but he seems too young. Are you breastfeeding? Maybe it is something that you are comsuming. If not breastfeeding, try getting good burps out about halfway through a feeding.
Hope this helps.

I also have heard great things about Hyland's colic tablets, although I've never used them. We have used their teething tablets and like them.
http://www.hylands.com/products/colic.php

Also, have you thought about infant massage? Maybe something to try.

As far as the breastfeeding, as someone else mentioned, really look at your diet since it can affect his young and sensitive tummy. Also, make sure you're burping him regularly and properly. Maybe he's spitting up/vomiting the times he doesn't get enough air back out?

There have got to be other natural things out there, just keep searching.

Keep up your great work, Mama!

Not sure where you live, but you can find it in Sherman Oaks at the Juvenile Shop, but the best price is on line at Vitaminlife.com There are other Gripe Water's out there, but I found that the Baby's Bliss brand worked the best and tasted the best too. Hope that it helps. Good luck

J.,

Try cutting dairy out of your diet. My now 3 year old is intolerant to dairy and allergic to soy proteins. Once I figured out what in my diet was hurting him and eliminated it, his colic/fussiness went away entirely. A naturopath told me 75% of newborn colic/fussiness is due to an intolerance for the dairy proteins passing through mom's milk. In my son's case, it was definitely true but he had the added bonus of not being able to tolerate soy. What did I eat Lots of meat, potatoes, rice, veggies and fruit. I lost tons of weight. LOL My son still eats that way and he's healthy as can be. You can take Tums for calcium.

I'm with the dairy crowd. It's probably something you're eating that he is sensitive to.

my daughter did the same thing for a while, i didn't think anything of it until about 4 months old when the spitting up stopped and she began breaking out in hives. i eliminated things like lotions and soaps and detergents (didn't make sense anyway since it would always occur when she had a booby snack)and then i was on to eliminating things I ate. I figured it had to be something major since it happened ALL the time. I got lucky because I took milk out first and that helped. You have to be careful though... milk and milk products are in EVERYTHING! Even if it doesn't say milk, butter, cream, etc, you have to look for whey and casein as well. It stinks but it's doable.

if you eliminate dairy and are a cereal fiend like me, try almond milk and rice milk instead of soymilk. Soy is usually an allergen in milk protein allergy folks. Almond milk has more protein in it than rice milk, so I go with that since I'm trying to keep up my protein for BFing.

Also, cooking like a vegan is helpful. Just add meat and eggs. I got myself a vegan cookbook (Veganomicon) and check out www.theppk.com a LOT. Surprisingly, there's a LOT of awesome recipes in vegan cooking.

Colic Calm seemed to help my baby some but it wasn't until I switched to an easily digestible formula with probiotics in it that he was all better. You could also research a probiotic that you could add to your breastmilk in a bottle once a day. You could get it at a good health food store.
