I have recently become interested in reading a book. When I was younger I used to like Stephen King books, but was looking for a different genre. It has been a long time since I even picked up a book. I am usually a newpaper/magazine type. So who has read a good book (not too long) lately and could recommend something? Or.... she I just be looking a a best seller list and start there? Thanks in advance for your input.

I read through the responses so I wouldn't repeat. You could also try Adriana Trigiani - funny and light reading she has a series of 4 books " Big Stone Gap" is the first, I fell in love with her main character Ave Maria Mulligan! I second Patterson, Koontz as hard to put down suspense thrillers. Happy reading.

Hi Jan,
My sister gave me a book The Collector by DavidBaldacci. I too had gotten away from reading books and also was a Stephen King fan back in The Shining era.
Anyway the book was so good. Mystery - with excellent weaving of characters and plots. As soon as I finished it I found a used book sale and bought one copy of each of his books that they had! I have started another and think this will be a book-in-one-hand and vacuum-in-the-other-hand!

I have a little notebook that I jot down book titles and authors - from book reviews or rave reviews from friends.
10 PM is now my reading time - great way to relax at the end of a busy day! Happy Reading!!

Hi J.,
I am totally into books. I read them, collect them. I haven't read Stephen King, but my husband does. I'm more into the romance ones.
I have recently discovered Nicholas Sparks. He has several books that have been turned into movies. Maybe you have heard of them: Nights in Rodanthe, The Notebook, A Walk to remember and Message in a bottle. I believe he has maybe 14 novels out. He has a new one coming out soon too. Check him out online to see if you might be interested in reading his books.
That's probably the best way to get back into reading. Check out authors web pages online and see what they write about......then dive in.
By the way......I also have 3 children. 2 girls and a boy. I always, always read as a child and into my teens, then I got away from it for awhile then I went back. Then I got away from it for awhile again, then I went back.
I find that I am a much happier person when I read. Happy Reading with whatever you choose!

Awe yes, reading, great get away without leaving the house or spending money! My adds: (almost all borrowed from our public library)

Twilight series (hesitated because of vampires, but it's a love story,,,very, very hard to put down! The movie doesn't do the book all the justice. Some of my fav. parts aren't in the movie. The emotions in the
book...ahhh. And then to see some of the emotions in the movie...ahhhhhhhhhhh. Breathless.)

Patricia Cornwell--Dr. K. Scarpetta series, a forensic pathologist/Medical Examiner (started with the first one and zoomed through all. This series is the "one" that got me back to reading for which I am very thankful to be able to read. I think she has 2 more series, one with Win Garano and then an older series "Isle of Dogs" is one of the books.)

Cindy Woodsmall--she writes about The Plain (Amish) with love stories and includes insights on how The Plain live compared to us Englischers. She has a several different series.

Janette Okes--she writes the series that are also movies on The Hallmark Channel. "Love Comes Softly" series. I love the books and the movies. I'm reminded of "Little House on the Prairie" whenever I read/watch the series but more of a grown up version of "Little House."

"The Wolf at the Table, a memoir of my father"--true memories from a man's childhood about his father's behaviors. Unbelievable. Just when you think your childhood was bad...huh!

"Glass House" which was mentioned by another Mamasource. A book about a woman's dysfuntional childhood. Wow. Speechless. I believe one of her siblings was not pleased that she wrote the book because the upbringing was sort of: let it not be known because of who we are today.

I also like to look up the author's website so I can see the chronological order of the books. I personally like to start at the beginning of a series and work my way through.

Here's to many great reads! I hope you find some to enjoy. God Bless!

I'm not much of a book reader either but I've been reading the TWILIGHT books and I am totally hooked!! My sister-in-law owns them and various family members have been passing them around as they read them, so I figured hey, I'll try it since my SIL said what a great story it is. I read before bed... unfortunately I get so caught up in the story that I can't stop reading. They aren't 'kids' books but they are easy to read. it's a vampire love story... but the good thing with the love story part is it's not 'graphic' (may be a turn on to some, but not to me). I think you will really like them alot!

I am an avid reader and my favorite author is James Patterson. I've always liked the mystery/suspense books. I used to read alot of Mary Higgins Clark, which is also great. But right now James Patterson is my favorite. I couldn't even tell you which ones to start with because he has a bunch of books with a character called Alex Cross (1st book with "Along Came a Spider", then a bunch of books about the Women's Murder Club (that started with "1st to Die". I would suggest starting at his earlier books because he does a good job carrying these characters through so if you start earlier you'll know the history of the characters better. Then he also has a handful of random books not related to either characters. I would also try Mary Higgins Clark, good mystery/suspense. And two other all-time favorite books are The DaVince Code and Angels and Demons by Dan Brown.

Happy Reading!!

hey. i just finished The Time Traveler's Wife which was great. I also liked that it has short sections where Clare and Henry talk so it is easy to find places to stop reading and come back when u have time.

Jodi Piccoult is also an AMAZING author. My favorite. She has lots of books out, including My Sisters Keeper, Vanishing Acts, The Tenth Circle, Change of Heart, etc.

I also enjoy Nicholas Sparks' books. And last but not least, the Twilight Series is great and so is Harry Potter series, although they are long books. If u watched the Twilight movie, don't give up the series because the movie was just ok but the books are a million times better.

Happy reading!

I've enjoyed reading books by Janet Evanovich. She writes action/suspense with a little bit of romance (but not too much) and they truly are a quick read. She has a series with a character Stephanie Plum, which is a numbers series, and she also writes books "Between-the-Numbers" that have the same characters.

Phillipa Gregory writes good books about King Henry VIII and the Tudor line. Her books are fun and interesting since they are historical fiction.

Happy reading.

I highly recommend Mary Higgins Clark, or her daughter Carol Higgins Clark; they have also written 4 Christmas novels jointly. Both are suspense stories; Mary's are more serious, while Carol's are a bit more light, sarastic, witty. Both are very "clean" (nothing offensive in language/sex), there is violence but not in graphic detail, and they are incredibly engaging page-turners. Carol's are all about the same characters, so start with the first one. Mary's are almost all stand-alone except the ones about Alvirah and Willie (they started as a short-story in a collection she wrote, then became the basis for novels - but I THINK the only full novels they are in are the 4 Christmas ones she wrote with her daughter - they are crossovers between Alvirah and Willie and Carol's characters). "The Lottery Winner and other short stories" introduces Alvirah and Willie.

I do NOT recommend Mary's first five books, as I found them rather disturbing; IMO she "hit her stride" with "I'll Be Seeing You" - from there on I found them all to be marvelous. The ones in between (after "Stillwatch" and before "I'll be...") were "ok". You can find them listed chronologically here if you want to search your library for titles (I am not familiar with the other ones this site shows in 1993):

Hi, sounds like you got some great ideas. I will second the James Patterson. I have read most of his books. (And I used to be a Stephen King fan as well). If you ever get on an airplane or go to a beach, notice what everyone is reading...James Patterson. It is very suspenseful and soooo easy to read. The chapters are only a couple pages. Makes it great for someone who is busy with kids or interrupted a lot. Always able to finish a chapter. Start with the Alex Cross series (they all have nursery rhyme lines in the titles) or the Women's Murder Club (they all have numbers in the title. Start with 1st to Die and go in order to get to know the characters.
Whatever you choose, enjoy!

Hi J.,

with young kids I too have not had as much opportunity to read "real" books. But I recently tried to read at least during the summer when I had some time at the pool/beach. I really enjoy P.G. Wodehouse. Any books about Jeeves and Wooster. Since the "English" language is a little hard to decipher, it helped that I had seen some of the DVD's first to get an idea of the story lines. As each chapter is another adventure for Bertie Wooster, you can put this book down and come back in days and not really miss anything.

Hope you find something fun to read. I'm sure many other Mom's will respond as well. This is a great site. BTW, I have 3 girls and lost a son who whould have been 13 this year. God Bless,

Barbara Delinsky's books are more family oriented stories and are very good, if you're looking for a different genre. Nora Roberts writes a good suspense/mystery series under the name J.D. Robb. Karen Robards writes suspense/mystery books too which are good. I also like a few series that have a female sleuth/heroine who also happen to run a bakery - Hannah Swenson series(Joanne Fluke author), catering business - Goldy Schulze catering series (Diane Mott Davidson author) , or family - Lucy Stone series (Leslie Meier author). If you appreciate smaller chapters for quick reads here and there, Mary Higgins Clark and her daughter Carol Higgins Clark each write a mystery series. Happy reading!

Hi J.. I just had to answer your request. I am a total book geek! (My girls are too!) If your looking for light, well-written books take a walk into the YA section of Borders or the Half-Price bookstore. The YA market has exploded with some really great books and series's. From Harry Potter (yes I really do recommed them to adults they are much better than the movies), the Sweep series by Cate Tierman (very short quick reads), the House of Night series by PC and Kristin Cast, the Pendragon series by DJ MacHale, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares, the Nicholas Flamel series by Micheal Scott....believe me when I tell you I could go on and on. As far as adult books, anything by Steve Berry, Jodi Picult, or Kathleen McGowan are gonna leave you wanting to read more! Enjoy enjoy enjoy!!

J. B What kind of reading are you looking for. If you want light reading try some Danielle Steele, Janet Evanovich is really funny, The Plum series are numbered books like one for the money, two for the dough ETC, ETC up to finger lickin fifteen. The story is about Stephanie Plum who worked as a purchaser in a Department store when she is let go she goes to work for her cousin Vinnie who is a bail bounds man and she becomes a bounty hunter. The story takes place in the NJ - Pa Area mainly. You do not have to read the books in number order. very light reading I think you will enjoy these books. If you like deeper reading James Patterson, Stephen King, Robin Cook to name a few. If you are not a big fan of reading I would start light and see how that goes. Good luck Happy Reading......J. S
