Has anyone ever heard of being alleric to sugars, also red and green dyes? My 12 year old has been suffering for over 2 years now. If she gets too much sugar or eats anything with red or green dyes in it she gets the runs.. I feel so sorry for her almost everything has dyes and sugar in it.. School can be a challange for her at times. The doctors just tell me to limit her intake. Has anyone else delt with this and if so how did you handle it? I want to give her some relief.

What can I do next?

Mine is allergic to rice, apricots and bananas among a host of other things. So when she was just starting to eat solids I would give her rice and bananas not knowing that those were the exact things making her sick.
You do have to avoid the unnatural foods. Can she eat fruits, they have natural sugar, fructose, or is it just refined sugars she can't have.
You have to read every label. We have gotten really good at spotting rice, it's usually in the top few ingredients, artificial colors are at the end. I try not to give my daughter anything it takes me more than a second to figure out and pronounce.

Look into the difference between allergies and sensitivities. If the reaction is immediate (within 15 minutes) it is an allergy. If it is delayed, it is a sensitivity (there are other differences as well). If it is truly an allergy, you need to talk to your doctor because they can worsen over time and become more serious. My guess is that it is a sensitivity. My father is sensitive to (among other things): gluten, casein, sugar (including nearly all fruits), seafood, green leafy vegetables (except cabbage), black pepper and, most recently, corn. Your life becomes about figuring out what you are going to eat next. For now, she need to become a strict label reader (there are more than 10 different ways sugar is in food, for instance) and start limiting/investigating the foods she eats away from home. Help her become educated on the issue.

my dad is allergic to dyes also.. he had to go all natural.. even shampoos have dye... he would break out.. he went to skin dr. and an allergist.. who did all types of tests.. then gave him a list of things he could buy... he has to stay away from so many things.... he also had to get dye free and scent free.. go see a good allergist.. and see what they say... my dad has been like this for 2 years... and now he is slowly letting some things into his system to see how it goes... it's hard...

My husband was allergic to red food dye as a kid - would throw it up within 30 minutes of ingesting it. So while his family was big on "toughening" him up with exposure to other things he was allergic to, they just avoided it. I'm now dealing with peanut allergies for my daughter, so while it's a struggle, it is possible to avoid. A lot of organic things are dyed red with beet juice, and honestly, I don't know much about green dyes - I assume if you limit artificial sweets and kids' yogurt, you should be ok. Good luck!

:) I had to smile when reading your post- NOT because of the suffering of your child, but because all of us are prob. sensitive to these items, which we shouldn't be injesting! I do not give my son ANYTHING with any food coloring in it- and limit his sugar intake severely. I use honey in bakings/cooking- or if needed I use sugar in the raw. Food colorings are OUT, even for me! Most real food items don't have dyes in them? Obviously I don't shop for the processed foods that are marketed to children- and my son has never had candy.

My best friend's son is allergic to food dyes too. I know it's hard to find stuff without those in them. Look in your organic food section, which often don't include the dyes. As for sugar, I'm afraid I can't help you. I'm sorry.
