All Inclusive in Mexico - Recent Experiences?

My husband and I are trying to plan a 10th anniversary trip. We've narrowed it down to 2 cruise possibilities and an all-inclusive resort in Mexico. The resort is near Playa del Carmen. It sounds glorious and our travel agent said that the resort areas are safe. But I was just wondering if anyone has been to this area recently. Did you feel safe? What about the airport experience? There's been some dangerous stuff going on in Mexico I know, but truthfully I'm not even sure if its concentrated to one area, or the entire country......My husband has told me that I need to make a decision on which trip to take by this weekend, so any advice would be helpful!

What can I do next?

I agree w/ the moms that said to hold off on Mexico; it's not just the border towns now! That's why there are awesome deals all over Mexico right now. But at what ultimate cost? I'd do one of the cruises; or get crazy and go to Costa Rica! It's fabulous there!

I have to say, I'm an adventurous traveler and have been to a number of "3rd World" developing nations and places that were on the "not advisable" list in my time, but right now I wouldn't go to Mexico. I hate to say that because they depend heavily on tourism and the industry is already suffering, but after the tourists and cab drivers were killed in Acapulco last week, no way. It USED to be border areas only, but there is starting to be a good bit of violence near resorts and involving tourists. The Playa del Carmen area hasn't been problematic and it IS gorgeous, but right now I wouldn't go. If you DO go, I second Kimmy's idea for flying directly into Cozumel. You may also want to check out Panama or Honduras. They have GORGEOUS and cheap beach resorts, incredible diving and snorkeling and are quite friendly places these days for Americans.

I have not been to the mainland, mainly because I do not want to deal with long transfers from the airpot to destination. I prefer Cozumel, you can get a direct flight righ on the island. The island is very safe. Love love love it. The island is considered to be one of the safest places to travel. Petty theft is abotu the only concern, but that is anywhere their is tourist. even here.

But if you do go to the mainland, most of you hotels should provide a shuttle from the airport, just make sure you follow thier directions on making sure you get on the right shuttle service you will be fine.

As long as your not going into the area that is having all the trouble, the rest of Mexico is fine. We went last spring to Playa and that's when all this had started and it was perfectly fine. We stayed at Secrets Maroma, very nice. If your big partiers I wouldn't go there, there isn't much evening party stuff but there is evening entertainment if partying isn't what your looking for. The restaurants were all great and the spa is wonderful.

having just returned from Cabo San Lucas, I can say it is a very safe feeling. It seems like the problems are by the borders. Cabo is not by
a border.
Whatever you choose, have a great time and enjoy yourselves!

The news I've been reading out of Mexico has not been reassuring.
I wouldn't want to take the chance of becoming a statistic.
I think the cruises are your best bet right now.

I would NOT go to mexico right now!
My dad went to an all-inclusive Mexican resort a couple of years ago and had a great time. He left the resort one time and then high-tailed it back right away. Yikes!
However, right now I wouldn't leave the U.S., especially for Mexico.

Happy Anniversary!
