Advice on Whether or Not to Get an IUD?

Hi Ladies, I've spoken to some girlfriends and family members about whether or not I should get an IUD; feedback has been mixed and I'm on the fence. I have an appointment to get a ParaGard IUD (the copper kind that doesn't have hormones) this Friday, however I'm starting to have second thoughts. My husband and I have two amazing children, ages 18 months and 3 months, and we feel like our family is complete. The spontaneity one gets with the IUD makes it really appealing, but some of the side effects such as potential implantation or piercing of the uterus as well as crampy, long periods make me think maybe condoms are just a better bet for us. We don't mind using condoms, however when we were trying to get pregnant there was something nice about being able to "jump right in", so to speak.

Have you had an IUD, or do you have close friends/family who has? I'd like to hear what types of experiences you/they had with the IUD, specifically the ParaGard type. As a side note, I'm opting for the non-hormone type IUD because I haven't been on hormonal birth control for about 6 years and have felt so much better (and with faster, lighter periods to boot!) since then.

Thank you for your input.

Hello,

I opted not to get an IUD. I was actually at the office to have it inserted and read the pamphlet ahead of time. My doctor stated he would not insert it until I read and signed the pamphlet. I had read a lot of things before, but the thing that stuck out to me the most was that conception can occur but it would cause you to abort. Morally, this is against my personal beliefs and I couldn't go through with it in good conscience.

Also, I hemorrhaged after delivering my last 2 children and the doctor told me that I would have heavier periods which I wanted no part of it.

Hope this helps.

I have posted on here before about how much I liked my IUD. I opted for the Paraguard b/c, like you, I didnt want the hormones.

I was breastfeeding when I had it put in, and didnt have a period for quite a few months after wards. When I finally did have a period, it was very heavy. The following months, I would consider it to be normal. Or maybe just a little bit heavier than I remember, but certainly, not awful.

The first period was probably so bad because I hadnt had one since having my second child.

We recently decided to try for a third child, and I had the IUD removed just last month. It was a little pinch when it came out.

Getting it inserted was a little crampy. My OB recommended taking some motrin before coming into the office. I took his advice, and it was relatively painless.

I used it for 2 years, and never had any trouble.

Good Luck in your decision :)

Hi L.,
If you really hate heavy periods, then maybe IUD isn't for you.
I have one in as I type. I love it, it's the one with no hormones but I have to tell you this, my periods got so bad the first 10 - 15 months after I had it in, and then they came back to my usual ones. I have never had any crampings and like you put it "jumping right in" has bonded my husband and I even closer...lol.
If I have to do it all over again, Yes, I'll have one inserted with no questions asked.
Good luck.
L..

I loved my Paragard - it came out on its own and I am having a new one put in next month. My periods, which are naturally heavy, didn't seem any heavier, and I had no cramping from it. Putting it in and taking it out was nothing at all - I mean, we've had children! Think about that pain and compare it to a little tiny pinch. I think it's totally worth it and I can't wait to get mine.

I know you are considering the paraguard IUD because it does not have hormones but as it was explained to me the Mirena IUD has such a small amount of hormones as compared to regular birth control pills.

I am on my 2nd Mirena IUD and love that I don't even have my period (no flow atleast) while I am on it.

I have the Mirena myself and I love not having my period! I spot once in a while (a couple days every few months), but I had horrible periods naturally so this is a blessing. Admittedly we still use backup protection because I'm so paranoid of getting pregnant again (which is ironic being that it took us so long to have our son and then gave up before I did get pg!). My doctor cut the strings too short so I can't tell myself if the thing is there or not!

Oh and I've had the Mirena about 2 or 3 years.
