Hi, My daughter would like to get highlights this summer and after finding out how much the salons charge, I've decided to try do do it myself. Have you recommendations for do-it-yourself products? ..and tips on how to appy them?

Thanks!

I would say to avoid "Sun-in" and agree on 2 things:
1- the brush in types are way better and more natural, but everyone's hair is different & a professional knows how colors work on hair...
2- Salon Picasso is awesome! I've been going there for YEARS and love it - I see Christopher (the owner) - he offers a discount to people who are referred as well! Normally when I get mine done, it's an all over color to hide the gray and then 2 other colors for some fun and with the cut and tip, it's a little over $100 dollars.

Hi J.!

Well, I've been doing my own hair/highlights for years, and my daughters for the last 5 or 6. The product I recommend is L'oreal, tho my daughter seems to like Garnier (I think its by Clairol). The easiest way I found to do highlights (especially on super long hair) is with a hard bristle paintbrush, OR use a toddler size toothbrush. Just dip it into the highlight mixture and ''comb'' it where you want the highlights. Hope this helps!

I have tried some different products from the grocery store on both myself and my daughter, and found most of the brush-on ones just lightened slightly, (and unevenly,) and choosing different shades made no difference in the outcome. But then my son wanted to do some funky stuff to his hair, and when we got grocery store stuff we were disappointed again, so we ended up trying Sally's Beauty Supply. They are open to the public and sell salon items. We also found the staff knowledgeable. The difference was amazing! When we dyed his hair black with grocery store stuff, it wouldn't go completely black and faded pretty quickly. But the stuff from Sally's (same brand, but salon grade quality) the color was really true and it stayed! So although I haven't actually done highlights from ther (yet), they would be an excellent place to check out, ask questions, etc. And they will literally have everything you need! Have fun!

I find the brush on highlights are easlest rather than using the pull through caps. There are diagrams on how to apply and also a number to call where someone can talk to you and help you. I have paid at the salon and used the kits and I don't see much of a difference except for the price!
