I'm considering coloring my own hair. It's getting where I need to have my hair done every 2 months and I pay a lot at the salon for a cut / color & highlights....But I'm not so sure about doing it myself.............Any advise??

What can I do next?

I am so glad you asked this question. Just the this past weekend my friend and I had a hair coloring party. She did mine and I did hers. Mine was just an all over semi permanent, but hers was an all over permanent and highlight kit. It was by Loreal $15. I did the all over color, she washed it out and blew it dry and then I applied the highlights. Seriously, it came out amazing!!!!! She could not believe that all this time she was paying so much money and it never loved the results. I would totally recommend trying it for $15.

Hi E.,
I don`t do highlights, but I color my hair once a month to cover gray. I use Excellence by l`oreal in liquid gel form and I mix it with l`oreal creme developer. I buy my products at Sally. The saleperson will guide you to get what you need and the products give you a professional result. I think I spend $7.00 a month! A big saving compare to what a salon would charge me. But, I agree with the other moms, for the first few times you might want a friend to help you until you are comfortable doing it on your own.

It really helps, when you are getting started to have your friends over and play beauty shop with you. I used to get together with two of my friends and have hair coloring parties at our homes. We colored each others hair, watched a movie and did dinner together. It was a lot of fun!!!

Now that I am pregnant, plus with a 3 yr old- time is of the essence. So I just color my own hair when I have the time which I am confortable with since I have done it so many times already.

If you HAVE to have the highlights, then I suggest you stick with the salon. If your highlights aren't dramatic, then you can use an at home color. I use the new Perfect 10 color and love it! Done in 10 minutes and I got the color on the box (not always the case).

Also, if the color you get from the salon is no where near your natural color, keep going to the salon.

You might try going with something closer to your natural color - you can go longer without touch ups, and have more likelihood of successfully doing it at home.

When I use to keep mine colored and/or sometimes highlighted I would do it myself or get a friend to help me do mine and I would help her do hers. It's so easy and the salon has outrageous prices.

Look on the side of the boxes in the store and see what certain colors will look like on your hair. For instance, I have brown hair. I sometimes use Medium Golden Brown which has some blond highlights or Medium Reddish Brown which has red highlights. I like Excellence by Loreal. I think it's best to have help since you can't see the back of your head to know where the gray is and to make the color even.

I do it myself but I do not have highlights. I just cover up what I feel like is premature gray. (Actually my hubby does it for me, but don't ever tell him I told you.. he he he)

My mother use to do hair, but is now retired and when I asked her she said go to your salon for highlights. Maybe look for someone who is a little cheaper. Now if you just want to color it with no highlights please find out from your salon the color and brand of color. You don't want to just go to Target and pick out a color you think is right. It will be much easier to just color I would not attempt to do highlights.

i don't do the highlights but yes to the color every 2 months, mostly to cover the grey. it's easy and fun to play with! if you are nervous, you could always get a friend who has done it before to help you play beauty shop.
