I have 4 month old twins and my pediatrician just recommended I add oatmeal (not rice since it may bind them up) to their formula to help ease reflux. I guess the oatmeal is thicker than rice cereal and I can't find a bottle/nipple to accommodate the cereal. I attempted to create a larger hole in a #2 Avent nipple but I’m drowning my baby.
Does anyone have a solution?
congrats on your preemies my son was a 26 weeker. I would do the rice beachnut rice is less gassy then Gerber. To help with binding add a little corn syrup adding oatmeal to soon can result in food allergies or so Childrens hospital feeding team told me. i used dr. brown bottles and they have a "y" nipple for using w/ cereal/rice.
Maybe you should try the stage 3 nipples, with the largest openings? The stage 2 might not be big enough, and cutting a hole does make it too big (my husband did this once and it also drowned our baby!!). I never tried adding cereal to formula, but that's the only way I could imagine it passing through the nipple and not just blocking it. My other suggestion would be to mix it up as well as you can before even putting it in the bottle to avoid lumps in the formula from the cereal. I hope this helped! You might also call the pediatrician if all else fails and ask what they tell moms to do who have had to mix cereal with formula in terms of the bottle, the best kind, etc. I'm sure you're not the only mom to go through this. A friend of mine was told the same thing only she didn't talk about problems with the nipple because the ratio she was told to give was - I think 1/2 teaspoon to an ounce or 2 of formula - maybe check with your doctor again in regards to the amount of cereal and explain you are having trouble with the nipples.

I believe the Dr. Brown's bottles have the Y cut nipple options that you can use for that exact purpose. Check it out, and hope it helps!
