Help! my daughter is eating more "real" foods and now is constipated...why? I have been giving prunes, applesauce along with veggies hoping this would help...the other night was horrible to see her in so much pain.Once she pooped she was her happy self again...

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

Hi L.,

When their tummies and body adjust to digesting new foods, they tend to get constipated, sometimes for several days on end. If you get too concerned about it, call her pediatrician. They will most likely tell you it's normal and not to get too concerned until it passes around the 7th day that she hasn't had a bowel movement. Painful I know!! Give her some prune juice, that might help, and see if you can't put the tip of the thermometer in her anal area and hold it for a few seconds. Sometimes this will help get something going and before you know it, STAND BACK! Both of those tricks worked for us. Good luck!!

Hi L.!

Funny you mention this because I've been having a similar issue with my 12 month old. The doctor told me last week that constipation during August is normal. Crazy, huh? She said that a combination of the heat, new foods, and weather can cause it. I agree with the other moms to give juice and lots of water if she'll drink it. Both of my girls have had problems with this and they always say the same, if it goes over a week, then it's a problem. Hopefully it will clear up soon for her so you can both rest easier!

We have used Benefiber in bottles since my son was 5 months old. The doctor recommended it, and we increase or decrease based on how he does, but in general is it about a half teaspoon per bottle. It works wonders for him, and we have avoided prescriptions. He is one year now, and we still mix it in his milk. It has no flavor, and it doesn't taste grainy. The doctor also said they do not recommend Karo in bottles anymore.

miralax used to be a rx only drug, but now it currently being sold otc. add 1 tsp to her juice or milk once a day and she will start having regular bm's in 1-2 days. my son battled with really bad constipation sice he was about your daughters age and miralax was the absolute only thing that helped him besides baby enemas. adults dont like them, so neither do children. eventually they grow out of it. my son is 3 and has just recently started going w/o the aid of miralax

I second Charlotte P's advice-JUICE!!!

I give my daughter apple juice diluted with water, 1 ounce juice against 2 ounces water, and this seems to be really helpful. I also feed her prunes once per week.

Hey L.!! Vanessa was right on the amounts for the juice and water. Diego's Pediatrician said to give him juice for constipation, 2 oz of water to every 1 oz of juice. And, Diego likes to drink cold water from his sippy cup, and that helps quite a bit! Give that sweet baby girl a kiss for me!!

Hey L.!

How is that little one doing? It was great seeing yall the other week.

For the constipation, make sure she is still getting enough liquid. Tiffany also said that her dr. told her she could use juice to help with the bathroom issue. Call her and see what she has to tell you. I think it was 2 oz of water to 1 oz juice!

Kiss that baby for me and tell your hubby we said hi!
