Hello,
I am a mother of 3. My youngest is 6 months old and she gets real constipated. I thought it was rice cereal, and she does not get that anymore. She is on baby food. Pears, carrots, sweet potatos, applesauce. I give her watered down juice 6oz twice a day. When she poops, it is still real hard and she screams in pain. Can it be the formula? She is on lactose free, does she need low iron maybe? I talked to her doctor about it and she said to give her more fruit, but that really isn't helping. Any suggestoins would be appreciated! M.

What can I do next?

I had the same problem with my little girl. Instead of rice cereal try using oatmeal with her formula. Oatmeal is a fiber and may help get things moving. Also another tried and true way is using dark karo syrup with water. My doctor suggested 1-2 teaspoons of dark karo syrup mixed with a couple ounces of water one to two times a day. Sometimes I would mix the karo syrup with her formula. I think it took about one day for it to really work and get her system cleaned out. Good luck.

I have had the same problem with my daughter. We have switched formulas, foods, drinks, the whole 9 yards. She won't go for days because it hurts so bad. My doctor just recommended a stool softener called Senokot. I think that is the correct spelling. Anyway, it is all natural and over the counter. It seems to be working so far!

When my daughter was first put on formula ( she was less than a week old), we tried both regular and soy formula, but her tummy would get so hard and she'd scream with gas pains for hours. Then I found the most wonderful formula EVER... It's made by Enfamil and it's called Gentlease. It never gave her any problems. You can actually go to their website and they will send you a small can for free (at least they used to). Plus they will send you tons of coupons. Also, try giving her a little bit of prunes (gerber makes some). Good luck!

My doc suggest giving a teaspoon of dark corn syrup mixed in one or two of the bottles during a 24 hour period. It seems to work with my son.

All great suggestions, but if try some of them and still no luck, it may be some sort of allergy. -As in my little guys case - anyway, if all else fails, I can recommend a GREAT Dr. - Michael Wilsey of Pediatric Gastroenterology, and nutrition - offices Tampa, St.Pete, Brandon etc... You might want to try giving her prune baby food or juice. That will help soften it up, and make sure she's getting enough fiber. There are also baby supositories(sp?) that help them go if it gets really bad. I had to do that once or twice when mine were little, don't remember quite how old though. Hope something helps your poor little one.

My daughter had the same problem and we had to put her on the low iron. She just did not tolerate iron very well at that age. She grew out of it though and doesn't have a problem now.

Applesauce has pectin (sp?) in it which can cause constipation. You'd think it would be fine, because apples help you "go," but the applesauce actually has the reverse effect. My 5 1/2 month old didn't poo for about a week, so my doctor said to give her prunes, or oatmeal (grind it up dry in the blender and make it as you would rice cereal), or even pedialyte. I didn't get that far. I mixed the oatmeal and prunes, gave it to her several times, and about 2 days later she went and went and went.

Dear M.,

Try vitamin C in her bottle. You can ourchase vitaminc C liquid at the healthfood store that is made for babies. Also the cereal for babies has added iron and binds them up terribly. Take her off of those and make regular oatmeal ground up in a blender. We ground up our food in a blender for the baby and stopped the jar food. In this way, at least I knew it was fresh. You can use the blender for fresh fruits, etc.

Hi M.. All those foods you listed are famous for constipation. The fix all is to not water down her juices if you buy baby juice you dont have to. Also PRUNE juice will clear her out but I feel sorry for you :) when she does have the blow out! YUCK. lol stay off the applesauce for a week and see how she is. It sounds like she needs more green veggies. My son was and still is a picky eater and was constipated alot but after I gave him baby apple or white grape juice (no water) he was fine for awhile. I didn't give him the prune until I was desperate. Good luck !
