My daughter just turned 5. She often says her neck hurts. Sometimes her back too, but her neck a lot. We have a Wii, and she can't play very long becasue her neck end up hurting, after she has been playing with her dolls she always complains that her neck hurt (probably from looking down a lot) and sometimes for seemingly no reason at all. She doesn't seem to be doing it for attention, she will usually just go off by herself and lay down. She doesn't really complain and whine about it, but when I notice she is acting differently, she'll tell me that her neck hurts. I am going to bring it up to her pediatrician when she goes for her annual check up, but I was just wondering if anyone else's child has/had similar pains.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

You are guys are great! Thanks for all the great advice. I hope the dr recommends a chiropractor for her- it honestly never occurred to me to take her to one! Her appointment is on Monday and I have been keeping a close eye on her behavior, so I think she can wait until Monday- but I am going to make a call tomorrow to see if they have any cancellations for this week.
Thanks again, I'll update if it is anything more serious then just a little neck pain :)

I would ask the pediatrician only to rule out any major medical problems but would have her looked at by a chiropractor. Medical doctors are good for ruling out disease and prescribing medication, chiropractors treat the spine/neck/back/nervous system. My kids have been adjusted since birth! In addition to lessening pain, they're also sick less often and not as bad when they are. Look for a chiropractor that works with children, I find it helps if they have children of their own.

Why are you waiting? Go immediately to the pediatrician. If he/she says it's nothing serious, or doesn't order tests, go to another doctor. This is not normal. also, I strongly suggest chiropractors, for kids and adults, but don't expect medical doctors to refer you to them - chiros take business away!

Absolutely go to a chiropractor. I have bad neck pain when I am stressed and the pain is horrible.
If you go to a good chiropractor they will help her with stretches as well as gently adjust her.
Getting a cervical pillow is a great suggestion too! I agree with the suggestion from Mikelle F.

I wish you lived in my area! We have the best chiropractics office. They are amazing ladies!

A chiropractor will help alot! Also a kid's size cervical pillow will help her. Core makes an excellent one. You can probably order it online. My daughter has one and loves it. I also get her adjusted every other month.

Before you have a chiropractor adjust and crack, I would check with or have your pediatrician refer you to a neurologist to make sure it's not nerve, spine or brain related.

Any chiro worth his salt will do x-rays before adjusting anyone. Make sure you get one with a pediatric certification. I would go to your MD first - just to make sure it's structural, not medical. Quickly!! Do not wait for your well check!!!

I would take her to the doctor, sooner rather than later. One of my good friends from high school has a younger brother, who at the age of three began complaining of neck pain after having broken his collarbone. At first they thought it was just because of the sling, but upon further examinations and xrays, they found a congenital abnormality in which some of his neck bones never fused. Needless to say, that is a very serious condition. It has since been surgically corrected and he's now a health, happy teenager. I don't mean to scare you, and there's a very good chance that this is not what it is, but that made a believer out of me to not ignore such things. Children that age should not have pain like that.

Good luck, and keep us posted!

Hi JJin TX, make sure your daughter does not have a stiff neck along with her pain. Check her body for any time of bruising. Don't want to scare you but Meningitis first symptoms are neck pain, stiffness of the neck and blotches on her whole body. Have you given her something for pain? Hope she feels better soon.

Go to the pediatrician. Going to a chiropractor before you know what it is is like making an appointment for chemo before you had your mamogram. Find out what she needs first, but do it soon, this is not a typcial complaint and is one that should be checked out by a medical professional.

I'm not sure, but I think this warrants a trip to the doctor to be safe.
