My son is 4 years old... about 4 weeks ago he got a sty in his eye.... I took him to the doctors and they gave him antibotics and eye drops for his sty.... although we finished all of the oral medicine, he would not allow me to place eyed drops in his eyes... everytime I did it at night, while he was he asleep he would wake right up.. I took him back in and they told me that he needed to get them lanced, To be honest it has been a week or so since I have taken him and made the appt. to see an eye doctor, I have not taken him back because the thought of him getting surgery terrifies me... I figured I could use the warm compress and heal it on my own since i hadn't tried it, but its gotten worse... I GUESS MY QUESTION IS: DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT RECOVERY FOR SUCH A YOUNG CHILD IS WITH LANCING THE STYE....

What can I do next?

As a child I had multiple stys (three on one eye lid)...the only thing that helped was to have them lanced. It works, don't be afraid because if you show fear your child will be afraid. After the lance, the meds and the compresses will heal him in no time. Stys really hurt, the sooner they are lanced the better.

I think you just need to get him to the doctor right away.

I wouldn't rely on any home remedies at this point. Let the doctor take care of it so it can heal and just get it over with.

Be strong for your son. Don't let him know you're terrified. That will make it harder on him. Try to keep your focus on how much better he will feel when it's done and over.

Best wishes.

The question is this: do you want to try to continue to fight this from the inside or do you want to let all the infection nastiness out so that his body can fight it off himself?
That's what lancing does -- it lets out most of the nastiness so that your body can heal. It's a simple procedure. Go, do it, and be sure to do any and all follow up including eye drops.

I have never had a child who has had a sty lanced, but I encourage you to do whatever it takes to get your son's eye well, eyes are very delicate and leaving a serious infection untreated could be disastrous! In the future, putting eye drops in a child’s eyes is a two-person job, you need someone to hold him securely and someone else to administer the drops. Even if he instantly shuts his eyes or otherwise lets the drops run out of them it is still worth it to gets the drops in even for a moment!

My sister had this as a child.. She also had started out with eye drops.and through such a fit...she ended up needing the sty lanced.recovery was fast . It is only a few days..and it is totally worth it.

FYI.. You must use the eye drops.. No child likes them, but since you did not give them to him, he is now in this situation. My mom and the doctor, were able to explain this to my sister after the lancing.

My mom was in the room when they lanced my sisters eye. The doctor called my mom over and said, come and take a look, he then lanced it and when all of the goo came out, the nurse said, looks like patient is doing great, but we have lost the mom!

Hang in there, your strength, calmness and attitude.. Is going to make this experience a good one or a nightmare.heck my sisters lancing was 40 years ago.. I bet it is a 1000 times better today.

Are you sure it's a stye? If so and it can be lanced it's probably better than a chalazion. I've had a couple of chalazions (large, hardened balls in lids that start as styes but then solidify and grow larger). I had to have them cut out. It was painless (after numbing shot) but very uncomfortable to have lids turned out, so he may need holding down for shot and procedure.

I would do it if it was my child. I don't think it will go away with compresses. The healing can start immediately if you get him treated. I did compresses for weeks waiting for my appt and they did no good.

Infections near the eye are very dangerous. They are that close to the brain. If it goes there you are in a whole another boat. I had an infection on my face and it moved up to my eye. It became an emergency situation! I had a couple hours to get it under control before they started talking surgery!

Lancing is a very common procedure. I would do whatever my child needed.

As for the drops....Let them close their eyes. Put a little pool in the corner and then open the the lid by force. This may seem awful, but it is for their own good. I have to hold my kids down for ear drops. They fight it and then 2 min later they are thanking me for making their ear feel better.

Take him to an ear, nose, and throat doctor, Otolaryngology, at this point. Stys can be related to Eustachian tube blockage. Some people get ear infections. Some people get eye infections. Some get throat infections. My son had his tonsils out at 3 years. They normally do not do it until 4-5 years, but it was interfering with his breathing.
There are stronger antibiotics. Lancing is too far. This doctor is specialized in this field. Find someone whom is. Always get a second opinion. This is crucial when putting a laser near your son’s eye.

They say that the tannin in a warm tea bag will draw out a stye, but perhaps it depends how bad it is? Some styes are causes by a staph infection, so make sure to keep his nails clean and keep his fingers out of his nose- staph usually comes from the nose.
