There's a Sty in My Eye!

Hey all,

About two weeks ago my eye was itchy and swollen for about a day, and it was horrible. Well, it went away on its own in a short period of time, and then ... Saturday I bought a new mascara and used it. Today I woke up and there's a knot on my eyelid! It's the same one that was itchy and swollen, and according to my sister, it's a sty ... she told me of some old wives tales to heal it, but I wanted to see if anyone else has had one? Should I call my doc? What do I do?

What can I do next?

There are some eye drops that are for treatment of a sty, they are over the counter in the eye drops area I think even Walmart has them too. The brand I have noticed is Similasan it has drops for pink eye, sty and allergies. I have not used it for a sty or pink eye but for allergies and they worked rather well. It's worth a try, it's over the counter. Good luck.

My hubby is an "eye" guy and here is what he would recommend... Take a wash cloth and run it under warm/hot water making a hot compress. Hold the hot compress on your eye for several minutes as often as you can throughout the day. If you wear contacts, take a break and wear your glasses for a few days. Also, don't touch it (so you don't add more germs). Usually a sty will go away after a few days. If it gets worse, call your eye doctor. The hot compresses have always worked for me. A sty is a build up of "gunk" and the hot compress will loosen the gunk and help it disperse. Good luck!

Im not sure but I tink these go away on their own.

Similisan makes an OTC Sty Relief eye drop. They are available in the Eye Care department at most grocery stores and pharmacies. I'm not a big fan of using all natural products all the time, but I swear by the Similisan products for sty relief, pink eye, and ear aches.

Your sty is probably gone by now, but for others...my eye doctor told me to heat a potato in the micro for 2-3 minutes (potatoes stay hot for some time, better than a wash cloth). Then use the potato in a motion toward the sty (so for upper lids, push the potato downward and vice versa). Hold the potato on your closed eye lid. A sty is no more than a pimple on your lid. Do this several times during the day. She also said that to prevent them, when you shower, run the water on your closed eye lid and gently rub back and forth across eye lashes to keep the folocules clean and free from any gunk.

Hi Lona,

If the "old wive's tale" is not dangerous, I would try it first. The tales came from somewhere and I've determined that they are usually correct when it comes to healing.

If it doesn't work, what have you lost??? Also check the mascara for any dangerous ingredients that could cause a reaction...
