2 Year Old Stripper

My son just turned 2 and is stripping all of his clothes & diaper off, especially during the night and I don't know what to do! Is this a sign that he's ready to be potty trained? When I put him to bed in pajamas, he takes the top and shirt off as well as the diaper. Then he pees and cries because he's cold. I've even tried putting him to bed with the tshirt onesies that snap between the legs. In the morning when I got to his room, the pajamas and diaper are on the floor next to his crib. If any of you have dealt with toddlers who undress during the night, please tell me what to do. I'm tired of washing his bed linen every morning because he refuses to keep his diaper and clothes on. Help!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So glad to receive all the replies regarding my issue with my 2 year old stripping. I found the footed pajamas with a zipper on sale! Until you mamas provided this advice, I never thought of putting one of these on backwards. This trick has worked like a charm! About 3 nights after I started putting them on, my husband unknowingly put my son on regular pajamas. About 30 minutes after he was put to bed, he again stripped down, took the diaper off, got cold, and started crying. Every night since, we have put him to bed in the footed pajamas backward and have had absolutely NO problem! Thanks again for all of your wonderful suggestions!

I would say yes, perhaps it is time to start potty training.

Also I would say you need to firmly tell him no when you go into his room and his clothes are off or if you see him taking his clothing off. Do not think that he will not understand you... he will.

When you go in his room in the morning he is undressed then talk to him about his clothes and how he has to keep them on- as you are dressing him. then be firm that he does not take them off.

I have read where others that have this problem put their children in sleepers but button them in the back so the childern can't get them off. I haven't had any experience with this but thought the info may be helpful.

I was going to suggest the zipper in the back thing, too. I have also resorted to duct taping my son's diaper on so he can't slide his hand in through the jammies to play with his "friend". Boys!!!

Wow, you must be exhausted! My son did something similar, but he was a little older, maybe about 2.5 yrs. He absolutely refused to wear any clothes or a diaper at night. He was already day-time potty trained by that time, but he still used a diaper at night, which he then of course didn’t wear anymore, either. I decided to use that opportunity to tackle night-time potty training.

A life saver for me was a mattress protector that just went partially over the bed (they call it “saddle style”). The neat thing about it is that you just need to wash the mattress protector without having to strip the entire bed. If you go to amazon.com and type in “Saddle Style Waterproof Mattress Protector” you’ll see what I mean.

If your son doesn’t want to wear clothes, and considering that it is summer, this would be a great time to start potty training. Take advantage of him being naked :).

Good luck!

I'm not sure how much help I'll be but, my twin daughters did the same thing at nap time. My only solution was to wait until they were asleep and sneak in their room and place a towel under them. Fortunately, it was summer time when they did this and they were about the same age as your son. The good news is that this situation did not last forever. Within a few months (I think) they stopped this habit. Now, they will be 17 and world travellers. And they don't wet the bed (as far as I know - they do their own laundry)

We had this problem with 2 of our 9 children. We used clear packaging tape across the front of the diaper over the tabs. It worked like a charm!!

I'm going through the same thing with one of my twin boys, every time I turn around he's naked from the waist down! Seems like you're getting some good advice, just wanted to let you know, you're not alone!!

I have one word for you...duct tape. If you foil him a few times so he CAN'T get out of his clothes (get jammies with feet and a zipper and secure the zip) he will forget all about his stripping routine in short order. :)

Though she's grown up now, my daughter would take off her diaper almost every night and changing the sheet got real annoying. But I started taping the diaper in the back and it was too difficult for her to remove. Might be worth a try.

Not to worry its just a phase. Mine did this too. I put her in the footie pj's that zip and put the zipper in the back. It made it much harder for her to undress.

If you're looking for zip-up, perhaps a sleep sack would work - and you could place the zipper in back.

When my son goes through this phase (he's gone through it twice and he's only 28 months), I just duct tape his diaper closed. Works great!

Sorry this is long. Footed zipper pjs , put on backwards zipper in the back you can cut the feet off of the pj's . Add a diaper or safety pin if he can still get the pj's off. Always double sheet the bed along with a water proof pad between. From birth I double sheeted the bed so if anything happened in the middle of the night I only had to take the first layer off and the bed was made I could do this with one hand have the baby in the other and back to sleep every one went. well I had to make a stop in the laundry room and start a load. Good luck.
As far as potty training he may be ready if he can,Just look for a general trend toward independence and an understanding of what it means to go to the bathroom like a grown-up.

Physical signs

Is coordinated enough to walk, and even run, steadily.

Urinates a fair amount at one time.

Has regular, well-formed bowel movements at relatively predictable times.

Has "dry" periods of at least three or four hours, which shows that his bladder muscles are developed enough to hold urine.

Behavioral signs

Can sit down quietly in one position for two to five minutes.

Can pull his pants up and down.

Dislikes the feeling of wearing a wet or dirty diaper.

Shows interest in others' bathroom habits (wants to watch you go to the bathroom or wear underwear).

Gives a physical or verbal sign when he's having a bowel movement such as grunting, squatting, or telling you.

Demonstrates a desire for independence.

Takes pride in his accomplishments.

Isn't resistant to learning to use the toilet.

Is in a generally cooperative stage, not a negative or contrary one.

Cognitive signs

Can follow simple instructions, such as "go get the toy."

Understands the value of putting things where they belong.

Has words for urine and stool.

When my son went through this stage we put him in zip pajamas and then pinned the pjs close with a diaper pin.

My son has started this...actually we'll be outside playing in the yard...and suddenly we'll look around and he's nekked as a jaybird...

We roll with it...shoot...if I didn't have to wear clothes I wouldn't...but about the night time thing...

This is a new occurance for us...he's done it 3 times now...and we put shorts on him at night then we'll check him in a couple of hours...

We also put double bedding on the bed (ie: mattress protector, sheet, another mattress protector and then another sheet) which makes it SUPER easy to change the bed when he wets...

Good luck to you.

We have also used the tape trick. We also put the jammies on backwards and like the zipup jammies that have no feet(easier to turn around). Gerber used to have some, haven't bought any recently. But I do know that Gymboree has them.
Good luck!!

I had a friend who did the duct tape...not to the skin, but just around the diaper so that it could not be opened. You just have to put it on snug enough so it won't pull down.
