Striping at Night

My 21 month old daughter strips at night, she will stand in her crib and take everything off just after we put her down. Sometimes when she is finished she will stand there and yell for me, other times she will just go to sleep and wake up when she wets her bed. It is becoming a nightly routine. I don't know why she is doing this or how to make it stop. Anyone ever have to deal with this before?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well I tried to put on her P.J.'s back wards but they would bunch up on her and make her fuss even more. So we tried to use some painter's tape on her diaper and she figured out how to get that off, so I have resorted to putting a diaper cover on backwards and pinning the Velcro down with small safety pins. It has been working so far. I am still on the hunt for button down P.J.'s though. Thank you all for your advice.

My boys both did this! I hated waking up to a crying, cold & wet baby. I put diapers on backward, duct taped them on (ON the diaper, not on the baby!), flipped sleepers around... they're tricky little buggers! She'll outgrow it, I promise! Flip her clothes around, try the backwards diaper if she's still in them, hope she outgrows it soon!

Buttons are also nearly impossible for them to do at that age, so if you can get a footie type PJ with buttons, that might help. Good luck!

Hi M., It could be worse she could be 21 years old and stripping at night!
Could you put her p.j.'s on her backward so it zips up the back? We have done that with the boy's. But of course you have to cut the feet out of the pajamas. Is there a reason that she can not express to you, is she too hot? I was a small kid and I remember wearing those blanket sleepers when I was 12 years old and they were so hot I could not stand them and never wore them again. K. K.

I had a firend with a stripper and she cut the feet off of footie jammies and put them on backwards so the zipper in in the back and can't be reached. A good solution, but I would wonder if it is a behavioral issue. It could be she is not ready for bed and needs additional time for winding down (more reading or rocking or back tickling with the lights off), or a later bed time, or is ready to give up her nap. Good luck!

What a perplexing problem. If you have zip up jammies, try putting them on backwards so she can't unzip them. Or, have your older daughter show the younger one that you keep jammies on at night. Good luck!

my son did this too except he didn't remove his diaper. I was surprised that he did grow out of it I would say after a few weeks. I stopped paying attention to it and he just stopped doing it. With the diaper part, my cousin used duct tape and taped over the diaper tabs to keep her kids from taking off the diaper. It cracked me up to hear this but it worked for her.

Wow - what a smart little thing! The only thing I can think to try is to put her in PJs she can't get out of - like those with feet and a zipper.

I have never experienced this but what about taking zip up pjs and put them on backwards so she can't reach the zipper ??? That would be what I would do.
Good luck

I've heard that putting diapers on backwards works, or duct tape :) At least then she wouldn't wet the bed.
I've found that the best thing to do for kids is to talk to them. Just talk to her about keeping her clothes on. It does'nt mean she'll keep them on, but at least she'll know what you expect of her. And then she'll understand better why you're taking preventative measures (like a safety pin at the top of zip-up jammies, or duct tape on her diaper). Otherwise, she just may think you're deliberately torturing her.

i have 2 strippers too......i put most of their clothes on backwards, from pajamas to jackets....mine also took off their diapers so i put onesies on them to stop that & yes they make onesies to fit 2 yr olds, my youngest is 28 mths & she fits in them.

My 2 year old was the worst with this, my boys went through it breifely but my little girl it bcame a real issue. As others have said, what worked for me was getting the footie jammies, cutting the feet off, and putting them on backwards, that way she couldn't get to the zipper. After about a week or so she stopped trying and we could put her back in regular pj's

Another thing you might consider is a sleep sack. You could probably put that on backwards as well and then you know she'd be warm and diapered during the night.

Hey M. - in all probability she's doing this because she can.

My girls both did this. It was a phase - granted a frustrating phase. The "discovery" of a new skill and the control it gives is pretty much what this is about.

My girls sleep pretty hard, so I would usually just make sure they had diapers on. If it was cold, I tried to get them back in their jammies. My girls also did this at nap time.

Maybe you can gently remind her that it's cold at night. Give her clothes in the morning (or let her choose her own) and attempt to put them on. If you can side track her with getting dressed instead of stripping off, that usually works - well, it did with the girls!

Unfortunately, it's a control issue - don't react to her taking her clothes off. Just act like it's normal and it also will loose some appeal - not much, but some.

She will out grow it - it just takes time.

We called my daughter Houdini because we could not figure out how she managed to escape from all of the different types of jammies we put her in at night.

I agree with those who are saying that it's a phase and she's doing it because she's discovered a new skill. Kids learn through practice, you know, and they are used to doing things over and over and over again.

It may seem right now like this will never stop, but soon you, too, will be telling someone else that it's a normal thing and their child must be a clever and inquisitive child to have such focus and determination in accomplishing these Houdini escapes!

I don't know why your daughter is doing this but my sister used to do this. (she was a little older, not sleeping in a crib). we would wake up almost every morning to find her lying naked by the top of the stairs where the air circulated more. She was hot. Don't know if that is helpful but I thought I would share and let you know that your daughter isn't the only one:) Maybe she is just fascinated with a new skill she discovered.

My son did this too except he didn't do it at bedtime, he would do it during the day. Once when we were at my mother-in-laws for Thanksgiving dinner he stripped in front of everyone-the whole family was there. Good Luck

M.,
Is she doing it to get your attention or because she likes being nude? Some kids love being nude, especially at this age. Our 29month old is always asking for nudie time so as a compromise, bc. it is cooler now in the house, I let her take her pants off. Maybe you can tell her that she can have nudie time in the day for a few hours. My sister was a nudie too.

We had a stripper, too. I put on footed pajamas and used a diaper pin to pin them on (making sure that my daugher wouldn't get hurt or undo the pin). This really helped-good luck.

My daughter just refused to wear a diaper or Pullup to bed, so I would go in after she was asleep and change her. Luckily she was a sound sleeper, but it worked for us until she went all night without wetting.

Although I have never experienced this problem myself I have heard that it is quite common for that age, what i have hear of people doing is using the pajamas that are all on piece and zipper in the front (the ones without the feet sewn into them) and putting them on your child backwards. that way they cannot take them off until they grow out of the phase.
